Would they walk up to a stranger's dog and touch it unbidden, or a stranger's car? But - "Oh look; an enormous unfamiliar animal with a soldier sitting on it - grab grab grab".
Horses are a little bit different, and the guards regularly encourage people to pet the horses. Horses like human attention. The problem is when people grab the reins. The reins control the animal, and if they are pulled too hard, they could hurt the horse. It's kind of like if your friend says "check out my shiny new vehicle," and you go, "really?" and grab the keys and try to take it for a test drive without his permission.
Unfortunately yes people do. The amount of times I have said just ignore my dog or dont touch him because he is old, blind and deaf but for some reason certain people think the are the animal whisperer and they can touch because they are special. NO YOU ARE NOT and he could bite you
To all guards, whether mounted or on foot, you have my respect and sympathy that you have to put up with these endless crowds of tourists when on duty. All I can think is it must be some kind of punishment but no-one deserves that. Our servicemen and women should not be exposed to this nonsense. The public should be kept back. Some are too disrespectful to be permitted their liberty.
probably the decorum (a soldier with a special outfit on a horse, staying a long time, unable to speak unless a serious violation) then the rotation of soldiers which is an attraction too. Can't help, it is a tourist attraction, if not, there would be rail to keep the crowd away from decades ago and crossing it would be a minor offense with a fine ! (as they are soldiers tasked with protecting the surrounding) And then, most people probably don't ever get that close to a horse, to pat them in a permissive place. (with a kind well groomed horse -not biting anyone)
@@DarkSnake49542 - clearly, you are not British, that is why you appear to have difficulty understanding what I said. It is NOT a tourist attraction - it was never meant to be. It just so happens tourists are permitted close proximity presently. We have traditions in Britain, which are many generations old: probably older than most other countries. These can be ceremonial in nature. The guards have always been on duty there, many generations before there was any such thing as a tourist. I can assure you it has often been challenged by the guards regiments that tourists should not be permitted to have access to them on duty but unfortunately our government over-rule such applications. Many British citizens also wish that our guards should be afforded better protection. Tourists should NOT be permitted anywhere near them, considering they can’t be respectful. Many of those tourists would face imprisonment in their own countries if they showed such disrespect.
I think if I was there and the guard was allowed to speak, I would go about this very differently. 1. I would ask if I am allowed to approach? So, I would not irritate horse or soldier. 2. If I get permission then I would approach and ask if I can pet, take pictures, etc. 3. I would reassure soldier I will not touch reins because I know the reins are important. 4. I will say thank you and thank him or her for making the ultimate choice in serving and protecting. These men and women deserve the respect and thanks. I am grateful that that they are so patient and understanding of annoying tourists.
Probably that unlike what we believe, to them soldiers, that post is an honor despite the tourists and the fact they can't move or speak mostly except for the shift, not a punition for being a bad soldier. (which you wouldn't put that close to tourists^^)
Horses like being touched on the face as long as you approach them from the front, above the most sensitive area of the nostrils. They don't like being approached from the side, but once your hand is on the horse's face, you can usually pet it all over its head and it will be fine. As with all animals, you should be alert, and aware that the horse may bite if he's in a bad mood that day.
How do you know that? It seems horse enjoys interacting with tourist. Some definitely more than others. And the guards know what they are signing up for
I thought there was a shop to buy horse food (to not injure the horses, as a tourist attraction) and the soldier would stop people feeding him when he got enough. (given that a horse eat and drink almost constantly every day)
Yes by all means grab the bit. I also don't understand the girls pretending to offer the horse something in their hands to eat. That's how you offer a horse a treat.
I guess this horse is getting fed up, being offered treats by the endless public, that are not actually there! And i've noticed, how irritated he gets being stroked with a feather-touch, repeatedly like a fly. 🙄🤔🌿

why ? you realize that it is a tourist attraction, despite those soldiers doing a real job for protection (when they are armed with more than a sword), if it was an issue, they would have rails to bar the way decades ago and prevent tourists from approaching. (with a fine to make it serious) here, the only issue is tourists taking control of his reins and so eventually perturbing the calm horse, still able to kill a tourist with a hit to the head. (the horse which is extremely calm and being fed -hopefully, a shop sells horse feed to tourists, they don't give him whatever they want)
Do these people not know that YOU DO NOT TOUCH ANY PART OF THE HORSES NOSE, EARS MOUTH ECT AS THEY ARE A VERY SENSITIVE PART OF THIER BODY, THAT'S WHY THEY MOVE THIER HEAD A LOT.
