This happened literally two days ago studying for a History Music Quiz. The passion at 1:52... it just can't be any better than that. Impressionist music in general, Debussy, Ravel, and everyone else. Some of the greatest music in the world.
I'm reading the score along with this performance--a very nice interpretation with much of the neuances in the score realized. The beginning line that you hear is simply 2 clar + 2 bssn doubling in 8va., the 1st/3d/5th chords are P5ths and the intermediate chords is a type of 3d, major or minor. The meter is 6/4. What a wonderful work that really floats around with very few and sparce ideas. Who said only Webern wrore minimalistic music??!!
Oh, I've heard that said before in grad theory classes (not by me): UCB. It could have been said flippently--I don't remember, it's been a long time since I have been in school (as a student or educator). Anyway Kenn, the point is here, there is only sparce material that actually drives this particular work forward. How very cool. Happy listening!

Rick K Composer Vangelis uses a strong variation of this "bridge" on the tune "Twenty Eighth Parallel" from the 1492 Conquest Of Paradise soundtrack. This Vangelis's tune, just like this "bridge" brings a flutter to my heart, a clarity to my mind and a tear to my eye when I hear it. Let me know how you think they compare.

The camera does a side shot of the ghoul near were drinks used to be sold as he slowly walks to the wastelander as the other ghoul near the car oil section quickly runs to the other end of the isle the wastelander is in. The camera stays on the side shot as the ghoul holding his leg bites down on the leg and starts to tug back on it the waste lander screams in agony. As his screams echo into the waste land the camera shoots to a somewhat wooded area to a wide shot of burnt tree's the moonlight can be seen piercing through the dense amount of tree's as the screams become louder you see several other ghouls appear from the dense wooded area as they all hiss and then another scream as the ghouls all in unicen rush off to the screams. The camera does a aerial view of the wooded area as it slowly moves all around the wooded area as the screams become louder and louder, the camera then slowly drops down to a stream in the wooded area. The camera zooms into the streams as the water that is lightly glowing green is going flowing down the stream the sounds of the music become softer as the sounds of the water flowing become more pronounce. The camera slowly goes down the stream and reaches a small path were the corpse to an enclave soldier is seen obstructing the stream the camera does a low side shot of the fallen enclave soldier his power helmet is off as his face is a mesh of rotting flesh and his mouth as well is wide open indicating he was screaming before death to the right of him is a plasma rifle that is bent into an odd unnatural shape, the water is flowing around his corpse. The camera stays on his corpse as a large deathclaw suddenly appears to the right as it lumbers around breathing heavily it runs it's hand over the corpse and flips it around as the you can see a massive hole in the chest piece of the enclave soldiers power armor it looks as if it had been done by an energy weapon from someone else in the wasteland, the deathclaw leans down and smells the corpse and walks right over it as the camera stays on the corpse as you see a back shot of the deathclaw slowly lumbering away. (This song chimes in) The camera goes back to the trail with the foliage as it the camera is in an aerial view of the end of the trail the moonlight show's a door crammed in the back hidden by some high rocks nestled into a small cave that the trail drops off into. There is patches of very green grass throughout as thick vines cover the door and there a small aquifer near the door the sounds of water pouring from the aquifer can be heard as the wind picks up and you can hear the sounds of a woman breathing and more footsteps stepping over gravel. The camera slowly zooms to the opening end of the trail that leads to the cave it then slowly zooms into the aquifer as the water continues to billow from the ground the water is clear and see through. The camera zooms extremely close to the aquifer everything around the camera becomes very distorted and blurry. As you then see a vague image of a woman with semi long black hair and the blue and the gold trimming from a vault jumpsuit. She is breathing heavily as she nervously looks behind her the aquifer starts to pour more water and at a faster rate. She puts her hands on her knees and tries to slow her breathing down she mutters something under her breath it comes out as nervous and inaudible you hear her say several times under her breath oh my god oh my god. The music becomes softer and the volume starts to fade a little bit as the sounds of the aquifer and her breathing become louder. The women then picks herself up from her stance as and she seems to be looking at the door she tries to open it several times and it won't budge you hear choke back from trying not to break down into tears as she places her head against the door and starts heaving running her hands down the door and muttering phrantic phrases under her breath breath, the aquifer becomes louder as the music is slowly fading the women is whimpering as she runs her hands on the door and softly puts her head against the door again muttering something in hushed whispers. Then you hear some noise coming from the other side of the door as you hear heavy objects being moved from the other side of the door. The woman backs up quickly and gasps as the door opens you hear the sound of an elderly man he gasps as well. (Elderly man) My goodness please come in quickly quickly!!!!! The woman in the vault jumpsuit walks in quickly as the door slams shut you then hear the sounds of heavy objects being place behind the door as the camera stays on the aquifer as it is pouring even more water and the music completely fades as only the sounds of the aquifer can be heard. The camera then slowly pull's back from the aquifer, The camera goes to a wide shot of the sky and it does a sort of rewind as you see clouds move rapidly and the moon go down as the sun comes up and it stops at the sun setting and the camera goes to several people all in vault jumpsuits under a massive destroyed highway bridge, the camera slowly goes down one of the mass pillars and does a wide shot of a small band of wastelanders all in vault jumpsuits. The group consists of five people three males and two women, the first male has a massive long beard but is bald at the top he is in his mid 50's his bread black and grey a stauch man about 5-5 in height, the next male is in his late 20's with a full crop of black hair that is a misshapen tunnel snake style he has thick stubble and is on the taller side right around 5-10 the other male is his late 30's with balding blonde hair that is around his head v.s on top he is slightly chubby and is on the short side about 5-5. Now the first female is 5-3 with semi long black hair (Audrey.B). The last member of the clan is a blonde with short hair she is about 5-6. (Now use you'r imagination on their faces and again it helps if you have played fallout but Audrey B is Audrey B, the first males name is John the second Craig the third Paul the other lady will Jane) The camera shoots to a brahmin that is loaded with camping gear weapons and so on the camera does a close of the brahmin as it shakes it' heads nervously and starts to stomp it's hooves on the ground as it looks around nervously. The camera then shoots to the clan all sitting down as their is a small fire set up ready to be burned in the evening. The camera does a wide shot of all them with looks of exhaustion in their faces albeit the have a great dynamic together. (John) Well I think it pretty wise that we shackle up her before dark and continue to rivet city tomorrow, I have to say the way the our brahmin has been has me on the nervous side to say the least usually the do not start getting ornery unless death claws or god no's what else is around.........(John then leans over to his side and grabs a small bed roll and starts to disassemble it and get it ready for the evening) (Craig as he gets up and stretches and goes over to the right side of the brahmin you can see him digging through supplies in the shot) (Craig) John maybe you are being a little paranoid here I do remember that gentlemen over at canterbury commons saying that all roads leading up to rivet city or at least all major roads south of the capitol have been deemed safe for travel by the brother hood I will say this with all that commotion between them and the enclave I do not think the brotherhood is really in a position to be throwing soldiers into harms way relax John you have kanack of cooking up some ehhhh should I say fantastic would be scenarios....(Jane) I think he has the right to be a little cautious to say the least you never no when a rag tag gro

The great burden of everything continues to weigh you down until all you can do is sink and hope it all ends soon. Beautiful piece by Debussy! ^_^ I always love hearing orchestrations of his works! :D But there's a secret about the first 10 seconds: if you pay close attention, especially if you slow down the playback speed, you'll find that it very, VERY closely resembles the opening part of the "Sharptooth & The Earthquake" sequence from the first "Land Before Time" movie! ^_^ Pretty cool, huh? :D
That's the Dies Irae melody you're talking about, a theme used countless times in film to go with death. It will either signal that death is coming (like in Land Before Time where Littlefoot's mother dies shortly after, in The Shining we hear it in the intro credits, also in the Sweeny Todd overture) or it is often played when the death of someone is realized by another (like when Luke discovers his dead aunt and uncle in Star Wars or Scar tries to pin Mufasa's death on Simba while his family is listening near the end of the Lion King). It comes from the 13th century supposedly and is just everywhere in movies.
This definitely isn't a dies irae. I don't remember this piece referencing it, but that doesn't mean its not in there somewhere. Now I gotta listen carefully to it. EDIT: The opening melody has the quality of a dies irae in the way the motive is shaped but I'm still not sure it is in fact inspired by it. Maybe though?

The camera then slowly pull's back from the aquifer, The camera goes to a wide shot of the sky and it does a sort of rewind as you see clouds move rapidly and the moon go down as the sun comes up and it stops at the sun setting and the camera goes to several people all in vault jumpsuits under a massive destroyed highway bridge, the camera slowly goes down one of the mass pillars and does a wide shot of a small band of wastelanders all in vault jumpsuits. The group consists of five people three males and two women, the first male has a massive long beard but is bald at the top he is in his mid 50's his bread black and grey a stauch man about 5-5 in height, the next male is in his late 20's with a full crop of black hair that is a misshapen tunnel snake style he has thick stubble and is on the taller side right around 5-10 the other male is his late 30's with balding blonde hair that is around his head v.s on top he is slightly chubby and is on the short side about 5-5. Now the first female is 5-3 with semi long black hair (Audrey.B). The last member of the clan is a blonde with short hair she is about 5-6. (Now use you'r imagination on their faces and again it helps if you have played fallout but Audrey B is Audrey B, the first males name is John the second Craig the third Paul the other lady will Jane) The camera shoots to a brahmin that is loaded with camping gear weapons and so on the camera does a close of the brahmin as it shakes it' heads nervously and starts to stomp it's hooves on the ground as it looks around nervously. The camera then shoots to the clan all sitting down as their is a small fire set up ready to be burned in the evening. The camera does a wide shot of all them with looks of exhaustion in their faces albeit the have a great dynamic together. (John) Well I think it pretty wise that we shackle up her before dark and continue to rivet city tomorrow, I have to say the way the our brahmin has been has me on the nervous side to say the least usually the do not start getting ornery unless death claws or god no's what else is around.........(John then leans over to his side and grabs a small bed roll and starts to disassemble it and get it ready for the evening) (Craig as he gets up and stretches and goes over to the right side of the brahmin you can see him digging through supplies in the shot) (Craig) John maybe you are being a little paranoid here I do remember that gentlemen over at canterbury commons saying that all roads leading up to rivet city or at least all major roads south of the capitol have been deemed safe for travel by the brother hood I will say this with all that commotion between them and the enclave I do not think the brotherhood is really in a position to be throwing soldiers into harms way relax John you have kanack of cooking up some ehhhh should I say fantastic would be scenarios....(Jane) I think he has the right to be a little cautious to say the least you never no when a rag tag gro

But there's a secret about the first 10 seconds: if you pay close attention, especially if you slow down the playback speed, you'll find that it very, VERY closely resembles the opening part of the "Sharptooth & The Earthquake" sequence from the first "Land Before Time" movie! ^_^ Pretty cool, huh? :D
That's the Dies Irae melody you're talking about, a theme used countless times in film to go with death. It will either signal that death is coming (like in Land Before Time where Littlefoot's mother dies shortly after, in The Shining we hear it in the intro credits, also in the Sweeny Todd overture) or it is often played when the death of someone is realized by another (like when Luke discovers his dead aunt and uncle in Star Wars or Scar tries to pin Mufasa's death on Simba while his family is listening near the end of the Lion King). It comes from the 13th century supposedly and is just everywhere in movies.
I don't know much about music, but to anyone that knows about the use of a dies irae, is it used around 1:54?
This definitely isn't a dies irae. I don't remember this piece referencing it, but that doesn't mean its not in there somewhere. Now I gotta listen carefully to it. EDIT: The opening melody has the quality of a dies irae in the way the motive is shaped but I'm still not sure it is in fact inspired by it. Maybe though?

group of talon company mercs or worse a group of super mutants decide to stroll into this neck of the woods and mind you can you predict when say a swarm of god no's what decides to grace with their not so wanted prescenece! (John) Look guys look were we are at since that raid in the vault I no spirits have not been high and I will say for that lying fuck our overseer is the real one to blame for all of this....(Audrey as she is sitting near the unit fire place she turns towards John) (Audrey) Can we please not talk about him...(John) what do you mean??!! Look we all spent quite some time in that vault and we were all told that after generations of what a cool down period in the land up above that things would have been restored back to normal or at least there would be some form of central government.....Look around you it's a fucking wasteland I spent years be filled with all that patriotic jargon and for what I will have to say we as a race of species really underestimated the fallout how long has it been since the bombs fell??? at least what two hundred years or at least that's what we were all brought up believing right??!! We are then thrown into a fucking war zone!! (Audrey as she frowns) (Audrey) Can we please shift the topic of conversation here. (Craig as he is looking down the sights of a hunting rifle and then checks the chamber to make sure it is clean and not in need of repair) (Craig as puts the gun back on the pack of the Brahmin) Well look let's all settle down here no need to start grabbing at each others throats here ok everyone settle down and stop running worst case scenarios past each other look we all are very tired and a little edgy lets all just take a deep breath and realize that after what about two days of walking and heaving all this gear...my pip boy says we are less then a eleven hour hike through the streets running north of this bridge here so let's all settle down we have one more night of this and then bam!!!! (Everyone gets startled) (Craig as he laughs) and we are all in the safe haven that is rivet city a whole body of water separates us from the rest.....so chins up and lets look forward to this horrible journey coming to a safe and quiet close. (Audrey) I second that.....(John) Well then if it is all settled and our heated conversation here has been mated to a an agreement that what all we need to is manage to stay alive for the next eleven hours let me tell you something here that can be an eternity in a hell hole like this!! (Audrey) Please for all our sakes John would you just try to be an optimist would you at least try to pretend like there is a light at the end of this tunnel would you if not for you but for me...(Jane) Look this is all start to get us riled up here our over seer was a moron for lack of a better word but lets keep our spirits some what high till we get moving tomorrow morning ok so that everyone can at least try to sleep soundly and John for Audrey's sake can you not see that this upsetting her.........(John as he angrily tosses into his sleeping roll) (John) Well alright then I guess hope for the best right.......The camera does a wide shot of everyone in the camp as the sun is just about to set, Craig hands Audrey her roll and then hands Jane her's the two ladies get their roll's set up and lay down both of them staring into the sky with wide eye's as Audrey shifts back and forth unable to get comfortable. The camera then does a side shot of craig as he kneel's down near the fire the hunting rifle next to him as kendalls the fire with some matches finally the fire is started as craig cracks a smile and looks satisfied and walks over to his roll with the rifle in hand and lays down and stares at the sky John is heard snoring on the other side. Audrey continues to shift back and forth in her roll the Camera then does an ariel front shot Jane as she looks towards Audrey. The camera then does a low shot as Audrey gets up and rubs her face. (Jane) Audrey sweetheart is everything ok?? (Craig is in the back of the shot sitting on his roll throwing small twigs and tiny pebbles into the fire ) (Audrey) I swear I think I might go a year without any sleep I feel like I am suffocating over here! (Jane as she then gets up quickly and is sitting on her roll) (Jane) Audrey you scare me with that..what do you mean??? (Audrey) You remember what happened to Felix.....(Jane) Yes unfortunately I do....why above all things is he on you'r mind....Audrey after all that with John you are going to bring up Felix???! (Audrey) Please just listen! (Jane) ok ok keep your voice down what then what about Felix yes I remember him I am still trying to forget...(Audrey) When we all left the vault that monster that what ever on gods earth you would call that thing.....(Mirelurk a creature within this universe) (Jane) Yes Audrey what about it get to the point! (Audrey) I remember when we were all walking through the river the one near that town megaton felix got nabbed by that fucking gremlin there was something he did that I have not been unable to get my mind off since then...(Jane) what is it?? (Audrey) It seemed that when they were thrashing in the water and craig was trying to line up a shot Felix did something that I would think defies human nature he just seemed to give up right in the middle of all that I swear I watched his face and he seemed to just stop trying to get the what ever the hell that was off of him...as if he came to a conclusion all by him self some were deep in his head he decided that it would be easier to give up instead of keeping fighting that he saw the complete futility of him v.s that that thing.......it was like he had given that creature full permission to just simply eat him alive like he did not care anymore...between the way the world is and how this world can even host life it was like he in the middle of all that violent thrashing came to a series of all these set conclusions and allowed himself to be torn to shreds....(Jane slack jawed) (Jane) Audrey do me a favor and just go to bed ok........Jane then tosses into her roll as craig continues to throw little piece of twigs and pebbles into the fire. Audrey lays down and the camera does a front shot of her face as she stares at the sky.
