Actually Gouache and Tempera are not the same, they use different binders. Gouache is made of pigment with gum arabic as a binder, and Tempera is made of pigment and egg yolk. (casein is pigment and milk)

Sarah Burns Studio! Wonderful gouache plein air painter in Scotland. I learned gouache with W&N Designer’s gouache in 1989. James Gurney has done extensive plein air gouache for a looong time. I’m glad to see the younger generations turning on to its possibilities.

Yes, I think think James Guerney might be the biggest reason for the resurgence of interest in Gouache. His videos are very popular.

I have been using gouache since the 80’s… it’s funny how it’s become so popular! I travel with gouache and also do quick sketches and paintings on site. One note.. and I found out the hard way… There are two types of gouache out there, one is traditional, can be brought back to life and the other is Acrylic Gouache… which dries like acrylic and can not be reworked… this does a number on your pallet and should be scraped out or wiped clean when finished. I try all brands and look in the sale bins at art stores… make sure you look at the label! Another note.. when I teach beginners about gouache I say that it’s like “Tempera in a tube”…. Yes, most people are familiar with tempera… Thanks so much for the great video.

Gouache is just so much more versatile than any other medium. IMO You can paint it thin like watercolor, you can paint it thick with in reason. Paper, Canvas, board prepared properly no problem. No solvents, no real mediums... you can make it look like just about everything. To top it off in a world where so many of us only have an hour here or there some days. I can start a gouache painting, and put it up at any point and pull it down a day a week or a month later and finish it. Love gouache.

Great demo! Love Allie, beautiful work! :)
I started plein air painting with gouache! James Gurney turned me on to it, you absolutly have to see his RUclips channel.
I built the sketch easel and everything ❤
It's a great medium for oil painters becaues you can use similar methods.
It does reactivate, wet layers reactivate the ones underneath and it needs a light touch.
Also the hue shift when it dries takes practice and getting used to.
But it really is a wonderful medium!

    Thank you Allie & Eric.
It was so interesting to see gouache from the perspective of an oil painter, who, perhaps approaches it from the opposite direction of a watercolor artist. Although gouache and watercolor have so many similarities, they almost work in an opposite technique, and I think that is the hardest Obstacle for a Watercolor artist.
I sometimes use gouache as a background to my watercolors. Because they are opposites I find that they complement each other quite nicely. I also see them playing a more important role if I decide to push the multimedia approach rather than strictly Watercolor. It would be a nice lead in to adding other media that might be more foreign to a watercolor artist such as watercolor pencil, pastel, collage etc.
Allie gave me a lot of techniques & tips for exploring gouache, which is to me a fresh & exciting medium in its own right.
I just bought Holbein’s set of mixing gouache using CMY+Black & White- a good place to start I think.
    Happy exploring!
