The funny thing about one-handed backhands is that in crosscourt rallies, they're very effective against other one-handed backhands because they allow for that high-kicking topspin if you choose to hit that way. I recently switched to the Wilson Shift, and using its higher natural launch angle I've been annoying the other OHBH users I play with (50+ high 3.5/low 4.0).

1HB have two main shots which have different requirements. At least 60% of the time we hit slices where stability and dense string pattern become prominent. However for drives/topspins though we still need stability, especially to give angles, racquet head speed becomes another important factor. That brings me to the conclusion to higher static weight with head light balance.

@@rc.835 Until two years ago, I was able to hold racquets with high static weight (>310g), so I was mainly using Vcore Pro 330 (2019) or C10 pro (Better for 1HB). However now I find them too heavy. The problem with below 310 stability becomes an issue. Still the best one turned out be a classic: Radical LM MP. Among the current models Blade V.8 18x20 is the best for 1HB but cumbersome on the forehand. 16x19 is a good compromise between backhand and forehand but though similar weight Radical LM MP has better stability than the latter (and of course more control thanks to 95 headsize and 18x20 pattern)

However on paper V.9s have considerably higher swingweights than V.8 Personally I prefer lower SW (That's why I'm gp for 16x19 rather than 18x20). So it seems that V.8 suits better for me (Still I'd like to hit backhand slices with that new 18x20) Having said that, thanks to Wilson's horrible QC, you can come with a V.8 with higher SW than V.9, which will send everything said so far down to drain.

My one handed backhand is my best stroke. For me, so long as the racket is sufficiently head light and at least 320g then it's fine. But that is my preference. I really struggle with balanced or head heavy frames. For context I have always used prostaffs. My dad taught me tennis with wooden rackets and I then graduated to a prostaff 85 and then moved to a six.one 95 in all its iterations until the blx and then switched to the pro staff 97 315 unstrung.

Best experience of a OHBH racket was an old Dunlop Max200G smashing backhands against the wall, putting it on a dime, was way to underpowered for match play these days though. Biggest surprise for OHBH was the Extreme MP considering how much I hated the Areo for OHBH I was shocked the Extreme worked so incredibly well, as all my previous rackets were more head light and had smaller head size's. Some rackets work better for me than others but I can't figure out why, maybe a combo of dwell time/pocketing and the way it whips through the air without sacrificing to much on stability, but that perfect combo would differ for different peoples strength and swing.

I played with about 100 different rackets in the last 3 years with my one hander. And to be honest it has to do more with very specific specs rather than the racket. The only attribute that i can think of that is cumbersome for a one hander (but that could be related to my own preference) is that the racket cannot be too much of a power racket (thick beam, stiff) as with the one hander such a power racket is harder to control.
The specific specs that are key for the one hander are:
Mgr/i which should be at least above 20,9 preferably above 21,0. this is related to a depolarised weight distribution and gives a better control over the contact point.
The second spec that is important is the balance, this should be low to have good manoeuvrability, but not too low as then you lose control. For me this should be between 31,2 and 31,6 cm. This could differ for other people, but a too high balance is difficult to manoeuvre and adjustments in the air during the one hander stroke are more cumbersome and you need the manoeuvrability.
Third spec to look out for is swing weight. This should be high enough to give the racket a nice stable feel and plow, but not too high as you will be too late on your preparation.
The last spec i want to talk about is twist weight on the one hander. this is depending on if you hit with a lot of spin (keep the twist weight low) or if you hit more through the ball, flatter (higher twist weight). Increasing the twist weight also reduces manoeuvrability so it is a double edge sword.
All the other specs are unimportant for the one hander. Static weight is way too overrated and by itself keeping all other specs the same only has an effect on the speed of your kick serve (hitting up towards the ball fighting gravity).

    • @LarzB
      @LarzB Месяц назад

The spec that i play best with, but it's specific for me but fits in the narrative above is:
      Mgr/i 21,1
      Balance 31,2 cm
      Swing weight 327
Twist weight around 13 (i never put weight at 3 and 9 to keep it low)
As a result my rackets static weight turn out to be around 355 grams, strung, dampener and overgrip included.
And if you want to know which rackets i have iny bag currently:
Gravity pro (way under spec swing weight)
Speed mp graphenext with the 22mm beam
Pro staff 97rf (also way under spec swing weight)
      Vcore 95 (2021 and 2023)
      Angell react mid 96 16x19

Solinco white out 16x19 has not so good feel, but it does what I want and feels predictable. Finally I had to try the Aero pro 98 but somehow it doesn't communicate well with me. I've got them all. I use to standard length 18x20 as my main, Simon uses the xtd 16M as his. Great combo of stability and speed which is typically great for 1hbh. The best 1 handed player I play with also uses the 18x20 standard length. The XTD+ doesn't feel as stable through I think there's a little more hoop flex for whatever reason.

You're both clearly no single handed backhand players, a pity in itself. But this video ends with the question what you've learned... So I still wander if there is such a thing as the best shbh racket. Or is it mainly the players technique?

    Vcore 95 v7 could be a better racquet but it's too soft.😢

My thoughts exactly when I played my one hander with a vcore so I use the tfight iso 305 with a leather grip

There’s no such thing as a racquet with “ideal characteristics for a OHBH”. Since most players win more points with their FH than BH, it’s arguably better to prioritise FH performance when choosing one’s racquet.

Doesn't mean you can't pick a racket that works for your forehand while allowing your backhand to work.

You're going to want a racket the compliments your backhand and helps to make it as effective as possible even though the forehand may be the main weapon ( for some players the forehand may not be).
End of the day it comes down to personal tastes and ability of the player.

You’re not wrong. That said, not all of us are tournament players and there’s very few things that feel better than ripping a 1HBH for a clean winner. If I had a good one hander I’d probably get the racquet that prioritizes that. Winning be damned.
