Llyn Dinas, Eryri, Photography: Reflections

- Join me at Llyn Dinas in Snowdonia, where on a tranquil grey morning with just a hint of Autumn colour starting up, I photograph the reflections of mountains in the lake. Landscape photography is often about conveying the atmosphere and conditions of a location as well as its physical aspects. And that's what I looked to achieve on this photo shoot. And when the rain came later on, instead of packing up, that was the time to make the most of the ethereal nature of a wooded mountain lake on a day like this. My filming gear wasn't up to the task, but I was pleased with the set of images I created at Llyn Dinas.

What an absolute gorgeous spot... wow... loved this... Gorgeous images ..that old boat house looked awesome
9:23 THAT is a jaw dropping shop. 9:39 is pretty epic too. Love it.
Many thanks for watching and being good enough to leave such encouraging feedback! 😊👍
Very enjoyable video with beautiful images. Thanks for sharing
Many thanks Tony, always appreciate you tuning in! 😊👍
A wonderful set of images, considering the poor weather. Nicely presented and explained, as usual 👍🙂
Cheers mate, I’d really have liked to have been able to film in the rain because I really enjoyed that part of the photography but my track record with water in my vlogging gear is not good! 😊👍🏻
Gorgeous spot and images especially that last on beautiful soft light and the right amount of haze
Cheers mate, I really liked that one too! 😊👍
Love watching your videos. You deserve more views. Thumbs Up 👍
Thanks a lot Ethan that's really kind of you to say. It's a lot of work maintaining this channel and I really appreciate it when people leave such positive feedback. Hope I'll be able to keep you entertained in future! 😊👍
Really enjoyed the boathouse shot. The rock in the foreground shot was nice. I always love rocks in a foreground. The closing shot show was excellent. Very nicely done.
Thanks Philip - as it happens I don't do too many with foreground rocks as they run the risk of overwhelming or creating an imbalance sometimes. I wonder if photographers sometimes feel they have to place something in the immediate foreground routinely, but there are many times when I'm working on composition with a strong subject in the mid or background, they would be diminished by the inclusion of strong foreground components. 😊👍
Er....Wow! What a fantastic location and a cracking set of images David. Another must visit location for me now 👍
Cheers Andrew - totally appreciate your support and tuning in!! Yes it's a really nice spot and not far from where we were 😊👍
Like number 205 came from me! Thank you for this. Lovely area. 😊
Ah I did wonder who that one was!! Thanks a lot 😊👍
Absolutely fantastic images yet again David
Many thanks Ray - that's kind of you to say. And I really appreciate you watching in the first place! 😊👍
Beautiful David, soft box in the sky looks like you had the whole place to yourselve which I think is a bonus. Thanks for sharing
Hi Trev - yes I'm lucky to live local enough to be able to time things to have best chance of some solitude! And I'd also been waiting for these specific conditions to cover this particular location 😊👍
Maestro. Saw your post about answering comments. This is what I will post so you know your fan in S.E.Qld is still watching.
Haha thanks a lot Gary - but you can be sure I'd always take the time to say Hello to you 😊👍
As usual David you pulled some nice shots out of iffy conditions. I think I’ve seen Llyn Dinas in all conditions - it was on my drive to work two or three times a week for almost 20 years.
Hi Brian, I've always thought that a grey misty flat calm works best here - but I would have liked it a couple of weeks later with a little more colour! 😊👍
Wonderful video, once again, I loved the images which given the conditions were excellent
Thanks a lot. It would have been good to have some sky colour, but a flat calm was what I'd really been waiting for to visit here 😊👍
Thanks for another great video. Your comments about composition are really useful. Love the image at 9:02. Absolutely beautiful ethereal quality.
Hi, so glad I could be helpful to you. Really appreciate you watching and many thanks for taking the time to leave encouraging feedback 😊👍
Fantastic reflections from a great location. Really liked the boat house image. Thanks for sharing Mate, 👍📸
Pleasure as always, mate - BTW I was out with Gary N at Llanddwyn and your name came up - he's looking forward to meeting up with you hopefully. And I'm hoping you'll be back up here some time! 😊👍
@@DGriffGallery, LOL, I felt my ears burning. Yes, I'm looking forward to it as well. Hopefully get a good street photo shoot and vlog. Not sure I'll get a chance to head up to NW this side of Christmas but I'll definitely be back early spring next year. Maybe a wild camp? Take care Mate, 👍📸
Absolutely exquisite, David. My computer was out of commission, so I didn't get to enjoy this with my morning coffee. Well done.. cheers from Canada.
Cheers Jann - totally appreciate your support and always tuning in!! 😊👍
Such a great place, love these beautiful views. Thanks for sharing!
Hi, thanks a lot for watching and being good enough to leave a kind comment! 😊👍
@@DGriffGallery No problem
Great video, great location and wonderful images. Even though you said the light wasn’t good I’d be over the moon with those pictures..
Thanks a lot Dave. Glad you liked them and many thanks for getting in touch! 😊👍
Nice compositions, each one well thought out with great results
Hi Roger, thanks so much for tuning in and getting in touch - much appreciated 😊👍
Great video again Dave. Llyn Dinas is my favourite lake in Snowdonia. Probably because it was only a short walk from Beddgelert where I lived for a couple of years. Unfortunately two years ago, for reasons beyond my control I had to move away. I had been back a couple of times, but could only manage a couple of days at a time. But next week I'm moving back into Beddgelert for the winter, and can't wait to get back into the mountains with my camera. You never know our paths might cross on our adventures. Keep up the good work, I always enjoy watching your vlogs.
Hi Steve, oh yes do come and say Hello if you spot me out and about! Hoping for an epic winter - can't wait some snow on the high ridges! 😊👍
Sone nice shots there, Autumn colours were not that bad. Llyn Dinas is a really good spot, surrounded by mountains as it is. The more photogenic boathouse though, is the one at the far end just next to the first lay-by when approaching from Nant Gwynant.
Hello Huw, many thanks for watching. You're quite right about the other boathouse of course, and I had intended to head round but wouldn't have been able to film it anyway so decided to leave it for this time. I live near enough to pop by again any time the conditions look good! 😊👍
Thanks David, added another location for my next day trip. Cannot believe that 5 years ago I actually stayed at a house bang opposite Lyn Dinas and because of the circumstances I didn’t get to explore it photographically. Frustrating , but thanks for opening my eyes up to the potential. Nice shots to tempt me back.
Thanks for making contact to let me know you enjoyed it Derrick, much appreciated - hope you can return one day, I'm willing to bet you'd really enjoy the lake and also a revisit to the surrounding area too 😊👍
Lovely images David great Vlog as always
Thanks a lot Steve, much appreciated 😊👍
Beautiful reflections, lovely video, thank you David
You are very welcome Mark and I really appreciate you watching 😊👍
Hi David, some beautiful images as usual and a great explanation of how you went about it :-)
Cheers Ian, really glad you enjoyed it 😊👍
Swimming in that lake back in August on the way back from my Anglesey trip. Nice bridge behind with a stream running down the mountain, it was completely dry in August tho. Great video
Hello Jon - yes you're right about the stream - the image with the couple of foreground boulders was taken from alongside the bridge. Thanks for watching and taking the time to get in touch 😊👍
cracking vid
Fantastic! I am getting so tired of the city and need to hike up a mountain!
No better time than Autumn! 😊👍
Very nice images , great location , saw an Otter when I was there
Thanks so much Andrew, really appreciate you watching and your generous feedback! There's quite a good head of otters around North Wales - I see them on and off among other wildlife, but I'm terrible at photographing them! 😊👍
How... Just how have I missed this vlog. Sorry Dave I must apologise.. amazing images yet again and all from one spot. Thanks to your vlogs and a few other RUclipsrs from North Wales I cannot wait for my holiday there in June. The missus doesn't want to spend everyday in walking boots..... Hahahaha 🤔. Hope you and yours had a brilliant Christmas and have a fantastic new year. All the best 💪
Let me know when you're in the area - would be nice to say Hello 😊👍
@@DGriffGallery cheers David that would be nice. 👍
Great to see the work in place for reparing the boathouse David it certainly was not like that when I last visited, not sure what casued that damage? great images as always enjoyed them all!
I don't think there's a specific issue with other than general age and weathering. I guess once a couple of strategic stones have worked loose it can start to crumble quite quickly! 😊👍
Well you have done it again! If I don't say it I bet my pal Charles will - "we'll have to go to that location" I particularly liked the shot with the rock in the foreground, the dodging and burning - as you say just a little here and there and voila you have it.
Thanks for making contact to let me know you enjoyed it Jonathan, much appreciated 😊👍
I have never wandered over to the far side of Llyn Dinas, I should methinks. I think I recall Gary N doing one from the other side of the lake and being bowled over by it's beauty. Autumn with some light must look spectacular. Another accomplished presentation by yourself with some excellent images.. I particularly liked the ourto section where the misty conditions gave you some images that looked quite ethereal .
Cheers Al - I would really have liked to film the final image set because although it was quite heavy rain it was very atmospheric, falling vertically and rings from the drops not being lost in a ripple on the water. Also the misty hillside layers would have been worth discussing too! 😊👍
Great video and a beautiful location. I loved the image of the boat house and mountains. I think it gave a nice sense of scale. I also loved the images at the end. You really captured the sombre mood invoked by grey skies and rain. Thank you for sharing.
Hello John - thanks a lot for your generous feedback! 😊👍
Good outing Dave, the last three images were definitely my favourites.
Hi Steve, yes I'd been waiting for that set of conditions. I'd hope for slightly better light, but moody skies over a flat calm were the order of the day. If I'd had the time to pop across there with those conditions I'd have covered the location sooner. It would have been good to be a couple of weeks later for some more arboreal colour, but you can't have everything! Oh, by the way - do let me know if you have any plans to be nearby any time soon as it would still be nice to say Hello in person ... 😊👍
Really like the first image with the boat house , such a beautiful location , you really made the best of the light , nice work.
Thanks a lot Lee, very good of you to take the time to let me know you enjoyed it! 😊👍
Love the photo at 4:50 with the twin boat house, has a great atmosphere.
Thanks Fabrizio, very kind of you to tune in and watch. And I really appreciate you taking the time to get in touch with your generous feedback 😊👍
@@DGriffGallery My pleasure ;-)
very nice video as usual an inspiring! I have got some time and I hope I can make my photo journey today plan is go to Cornwall
Hi Norbert, thanks so much for watching. Sorry I'm little slow in responding, but I really hope you had a great time in Cornwall 😊👍
A beautiful location and some really nice shots!
Thanks a million, Markus. So glad you enjoyed this 😊👍
I really need to get that EM1 mii... My EM10 has served me well, but... that weather seal... and the extra pixels... and a pro lens... Can’t wait. Great images as usual! Snowdonia seems such a great place to visit some day.
The em5mk3 is out now and for landscapers is basically a smaller and cheaper em1mk2
Hi Erik, many thanks for watching - I totally agree with your thoughts about Snowdonia! 😊👍
Love that location but I've never had any luck there. I walked all the way round to where you were to set up for the boat house and ended up with thick fog. Other times I've set off from Anglesey in great weather got there and it's tipping down. If I had to pick a favourite it's the last one sums up the area well
Hahaha, yes that hi-key grey-out is pretty typical although it's usually quite choppy too when the weather is poor so it worked out quite well - I'd been waiting for a flat-calm forecast for this location and had my fingers crossed they were right when I set off from Bodorgan! 😊👍
Don't worry about length Dave, quality beats quantity every time.
Cheers Alan - I'd really have liked to talk through the other shots and really should get a brolly clamp for my video gear! Of course most of time round here it would be unusable due to high winds! But every now and then I could keep filming in the rain! 😊👍
Hi can you tell us what make of filters and filter holder you are using on the 12-100 lens please.
Hello Colin - my holder / CPL is a Formatt HiTech Firecrest 85mm system, but I'm also using a couple of older Cokin Nuances glass filters (10-stop & 0.9 soft-grad) which I'd bought with a previous holder. No need to change them as they're perfectly good. 😊👍
Many thanks, great vlogs as always. Regards.
