Rock music of the '60s and '70s fostered not just a generation of pioneering guitarists, but some of the most identifiable organ riffs of all time. Bands like Deep Purple, Procol Harum, and The Band relied as much on heavy, majestic keyboard tones as it did on cranked tube amps. Even the greatest jazz guitarists of the era spent time in organ trios with players like Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, and Mel Rhyne.
Yes, guitar and organ go together like hand and glove. Of course, the big downside to getting that tone is the heft and hassle of toting a keyboard rig around. But Electro-Harmonix's B9 Organ Machine cops a lot of those tones in a compact stompbox, enabling guitarists to get in on some of that drawbar-fueled action.
    Organ Grinder
The B9 has a simple enough layout that you can jump right in. The five-knob setup allows you to control the level of the dry and organ signal, plus a mod and click control. The large knob moves you through nine different organ types and on the left side of the pedal there are individual outputs for each signal-a definite plus.
EHX provides recommendations for best tracking your guitar signal. First, they suggest placing it earlier in your signal chain and before any distortion or overdrives. On my board I experimented with it before and after a Fulltone Full-Drive 2 MOSFET and noticed a distinct advantage to placing the B9 early in the chain. There was one exception: I placed the B9 after the Full-Drive 2 to help goose the input signal a bit when I used my MIM Fender Strat. Since the Strat's pickups have a lower output, the added clean boost helped give the B9 a healthy signal.

I want a pedal for my organ that makes it sound like a smokin-hot PRS 11-top private-stock single-cut semi-hollow guitar!

I recommend putting a compression pedal before hand. It really makes the b9 pop.

When I got into guitar synths, organ & pads were the first sounds I went for. To have them in a $225 pedal is terrific.

I run my B9 (and Mel9) into a Fender Mustang Floor which has a vibratone modulation pedal that can be assigned to the volume/expression pedal. I set the amp model to studio preamp so it doesn't color the tone of my deluxe reverb it feeds.

I run my B9 (and Mel9) into a Fender Mustang Floor amp. I use a preset with a vibratone modulation. The speed of the Leslie effect is controlled by the expression pedal on the floor amp.

I also have a Mel9 that works well with my Fender Mustang iii v2. I'm looking at both the B9 and C9 as well. I'm curious about how well the Electro-Harmonix Lester G pedal would work with the Mustang? I've seen the reviews with the Lester and the 9 series together and it was pretty good. Just wondering how well the Lester sounds with a solid state amp with the dirt turned up.

    Awesome, JB!
I've got an organ'ish simulator effect on my old Z00M 505 pedal, that I use to open up a show with sometimes.
...with some distortion, of course. ;-)

Great pedal. The trick is to not play guitar licks while using this pedal. Think like a keyboard player. It takes time but the results are more than worth the work. Thanks again EH.

I have been an EHX pedal groupie for decades. Some are great and some.... Not.
They seem to never discount an idea and that's sometimes awesome.
    BUT.
The B series is unbelievable accurate and, for me, useable.
I play a solo. Guitar, vocal with a harmonizer pedal. A drum machine but the B9 mixed low adds so much to slower heavy songs.
Comfortably Numb. Turn the Page, etc.
It almost takes the place of a bass.
I'm really an acoustic solo singer songwriter yacht-rock player.
    But this pedal is awesome....
    No latency!

An expression pedal to control the modulation speed would make this thing really sing and sound like a Leslie. that is the main thing a guitorganist would want, apart from a solid understanding of organ technique so this doesn't just sound like a guitar effect.

Man, I just can't away from this pedal. Every other demo is this damn B9. I guess I need to just suck it up and get one. I have a feeling it's going to be the next classic EHX legacy I just wish they had an expression pedal input.

Bought one today. Beautiful sound when coupled with the other pedals.
    But...
I have one issue, which happens to be an important one for our band:
How to I get the B9 to breathe infinitely? Or a longer decay?
Anybody have any ideas? my guitar is tuned to A#
    .
    .

    • @fonzybrookestone727
      @fonzybrookestone727 8 лет назад

+aidanvinum Might be tricky, or a pain in the ass, but would a looper pedal work? Like one of those little cheap TC loopers, like $80

    • @xebio6
      @xebio6 8 лет назад

+aidanvinum There are ways of lengthening the decay. For one thing, use an extra chorus/vibrato/tremolo/Leslie rotary after the B9, which will work better than the in-built modulation effects (I use the Leslie mode of a Digitech EX 7 Expression Factory, sounds great after the B9 and is relatively inexpensive). A compressor in front (some people put it afterwards) helps to provide the B9 with a more consistent signal. Even a booster or mild overdrive will help. Also, semi-hollow or hollow guitars tend to combine their natural feedback with the B9 sustainy organ thing in a way that can get you close to "infinite" (I had that experience once with an Epiphone Swingster, I held a doublestop till my fingers hurt and some of the B9 overtones seemed as if they would never die out! I let go after about 3 minutes). If all else fails, try an EHX Freeze pedal. It does what the name implies.

+aidanvinum Add a "Sustainiac" or "Sustainor" pickup to your guitar. Works like an E-bow, will give you the infinite sustain that you're looking for.

One thing I'd criticize is that tremolo. I know you can't do a realistic leslie but at least a more vibrato sound or closer to a leslie. Also, it would be better if you could turn off the sensitivity to be more like a real organ.

John is a smooth dude but, lets face the facts ALL of the audio reviews of this parlor trick, including the official trailer sound like a hack organ player and, I am sure this is no reflection of the players themselves. I own one, save your money.
