I like to cut center out leaving a 1/2" border of "wheat field" around the perimeter. Then make a cardboard base, and texture, drybrush brown, etc. This gives you a field that models don't have to float on top of. Also say you start with a 8" x 6" rectangle for the field. Every time you cut out the center leaving a ½" perimeter the field simply gets ½" smaller. So second field is 7½" x 5½", 3rd field is 7" x 5" and so on. Until they get too small for the fields you want. Those can be cut into ½" strips and either strung together to make yet another field, or put end to end in rows if you want that effect. So a few cheap welcome mats can be turned into multiple tables worth of fields.
Thank you Jamie! :) You always have the chance of visiting me here in Estonia, I'll do a one-man gaming convention filled with Muskets and Tomahawks, Ronin and maybe something else aswell :D Cheers, Tris.
Yes, it is. If I ever run a tournament and find myself lacking terrain like a few hours before the start I'll just grab a few doormatts and cut away. :D Thank you mate for the comment. Hope you're having a blast with your family- who needs sleep anyways? Cheers, Tris.
Where I used to work (small flooring shop) we would have entire rolls of Coir matting which is basically what these mats are. If any one is struggling to find a mat without text i would suggest going to somewhere like that, you could probably get an off cut.
Hello I think you've, given a great finish to the fields looks great with the flocking surround, keep the printed section, you can coat it with paint colours for different crops and also flock on top with flower-like granules or for seedheads effect - General Rid Stump!!!
Thank you Michael for the suggestion. Brilliant. :) Maybe some hedge rows when painted green? Like terrain for Normandy (for FoW). Thank you so much for the comment and suggestion :D! Cheers, Tris.
In the UK I have found many like this from the £1 shops. I have also sourced a local carpet fitters shop and now have their permission to trawl their rubbish skip for off cuts, which has proved to be very fruitful and free!
1£ shops sound like a bargain. But getting pieces for free is brilliant. :) How many tables do you have? And thank you for the comment Brian! :) Cheers, Tris.
The other places where I have had some success in finding very useful materials for scratch building terrain is car boot sales. Often you find stuff for £1 or £2 that sellers are only too glad to get rid of. For instance old boardgames which contain counters, dice, heavy card stock for buildings and bases etc. It doesn't matter to me if the game is incomplete, all the better as the price will be low because the seller assumes it can't be worth much as the original game! Also incomplete packs of floor tiles with cobble stone effect or cork tile remnants etc. The new year season for car booting I am looking forward to as there are bound to be many boxes of figures and vehicles which were bought as xmas presents and have not been started and putting them on e-bay is too much hassle or P&P prohibitive etc. Happy hunting TTFN Brian ; )
Awesome! I've been meaning to make some fields like this for a while, but I can't for the life of me find a mat that isn't completely covered in lettering/design. Need to keep looking, as I NEED some fields. I've also seen people cut a smaller rectangle out of the bigger one, so that when there are models 'in' the field, you can actually place them 'in' the field (just remove the smaller one).
Thanks you Justin! I'd be willing you send some ! ;) Just let me know. And I'll do the cutting thing once I start doing a Bolt Action table in 15mm scale. So, it'll be a 2ftx2ft table. Less hassle and easier to store. Cheers, Tris.
Good question. For this specific piece it didn't warp. Not sure what I did to avoid it. When I would do it now I would do a layer of pva also under the cardboard at the same time. This should even it out. Cheers, Tristan
First of all- sorry for the late reply. Sometimes the notifications get lost in the inbox. I'm glad this helped you out. What game are you trying out? Cheers, Trist.
athilith No problem. Sometimes I receive an answer after years ;) I try to play crossfire. I found out about it at Lindybeige. Maybe you know his channel. I think most tabletop games are to slow. Or at least all I seen so far. They taking so much time for an single turn. Of course this is satisfying strategy, but its not so cool if you are a new player or want to get home before dusk. Crossfire is faster. You haven't to check tons of variables, so you are less minded to plan one movement for 10 minutes. A game can take hours or 30 minutes. Depending of your battlefield and generals ^^ But this is just the one part of my newest hobby. Its hard find a play partner. Maybe Germany isn't the biggest Tabletop part in the world, is it? We have some Gamesworkshop with Warhammer. Most of the players I met are not so kind. Old introvert masters ;) And thats it. So the other more deeper part of my hobby is to create the terrain. Just as you did with the mat in this video. Making old or cheap stuff to something very awesome. I love it =D
Use a Stanley carpet Blade .It has a curved blade .So much easier slicing . Try a pair of leather gloves so accidents dont lose a Thumb or spray red sauce evrywhere before the Ambulance arrives
There are more "simple" terrain stuff out there, and if I can find a use for it, I'll share it also. :) I'm glad I could be of help. And thank you for teh infectious comment, mr. Zombi. Cheers, Tristan.
Yeah, unfortunately no IKEA in Estonia. Do you use it just as a big square or did you cut it into rows or did you cut in some holes where you could place minis? Cheers, Tris.
Did you obtain written permission from Games Works**p before defacing their product packaging first? If not you could be getting a legal writ! Then you will be asked to remove this video clip! Oh! no!

Nice Trist, looks a lovely board at the end, with some of the best painted figs out.

I actually liked the idea of free range fields so troops, cav , arty move through it as you would through a crop of Barley stalks
Its a quick, cheap technique and as usual, you've done some quality work on finishing of the basing!

The cardboard is so thin, how does it not warp when you pva glue sand to it?
Good question. For this specific piece it didn't warp. Not sure what I did to avoid it.
When I would do it now I would do a layer of pva also under the cardboard at the same time. This should even it out.

Great vid mate, nice ideas
Thanks Nick. Try finding some dark grey ones or even black ones- could be this dead vegetation on your tomb world. :)
Cheers,
