What are these pundits on about? Not trying to show my bias here as a Dutchman but in the repeat, from the side you could see there was space for Maignan to dive back to the goal near the line, which is what goalkeepers tend to do when they try to save long shots aimed at the corners of the goal. He also had clear vision on the trajectory of the ball, but barely recovered from the save prior. Dumfries was standing motionless, not behind Maignan (which would have been obstruction), but a bit in front of him and at least one meter away to his side. That leaves plenty of space for Maignan to dive. So I don't understand the claim that Maignan has nowhere to go. He just realized he wasn't in time to collect himself after that deflection and make a consecutive save. The attempt was also accurately placed. So he just made an appeal to the refs to disallow the goal. There was no response from the keeper, no answer, and certainly he knew where the ball was going looking out into the box and seeing Simons readying a second attempt.

Anyone who thinks that was a valid offside has no sense of football. The goalkeeper was totally beaten. Dumfries being there or not it would have gone in, he was not standing in the way and he made no movement towards the ball. Add in that it took them so long to decide. It's not hard to judge of someone is offside or not. If it takes you 3 min to decide whether it was offside then the goal should just be allowed because all they're doing at that point is trying to rationalize the offside when it clearly isn't.

Throughout every season/tournament you see similar situations get completely different rulings. The rules in football are just laughable as the way rulings are made is just pure guess work in far too many situations (like this one) and differs from referee to referee.
Clearly the rules and situations they happen in are too unclear for arbiters which is exactly why people correctly question the impartiality of arbiters, because otherwise we wouldn’t see goals from similar situations be approved in leagues.
