Low rpm electric motor for driving a trailer axle is something I thought of. What to do at highway speeds was a concern. Never thought of using a starter which has the disconnecting means built in. Genius in its simplicity.
I had an argument many times in the 1990s as a teenager with the old men in "the junkyard" , that this exact thing would work on an old chevy sprint very similar to the car in this video. . They said it wouldn't have enough power to even be noticed or the gear would snap. the junkyard is now a grocery store strip mall and the old men are long dead, but i finally have the answer, I was right. I had a similar discussion about a Plymouth Horizon, VW Rabbit, etc. Recently, the slave cylinder went out on my HHR so I was unable to disengage the clutch. In order to get it home I just started it in gear, which would also move the car forward. That old discussion once again came to mind.
I used to have a 95 civic with the clutch switch bypassed lol. I could roll it around in my driveway when it didn't start sometimes. It was a really funny trick to play on people. bless brother
I suspect the oldtimers expected that you would be using it when going faster than that of a jogging pace, which they would've been right. In actuality, I wouldn't be surprised if it were to *_impeded_* movement in those scenarios! Still, some folk - especially when older - have issues thinking outside the box like this, so good job on coming up with it!
Seeing Garage 54 turning an old Lada and a coupple of rusty starters into a basic hybrid car was not on my 2024 bucketlist. Damn you guys never run out of crazy ideas do you?
Its such a great idea actually, because when you don't need 4wd, you don't have the efficiency loss of a traditional 4wd system, it's still just a front wheel drive.

Not really. It will add unsprung mass to the wheel. Also the rear axle doesn't seem to be designed to be able to apply torque - hence it moves quite a lot when the motor power up.
@@andree182 By swapping from drums to discs they've probably removed a fair bit of unsprung mass. Plus this is just a proof of concept, there's no reason you can't relocate the motors out of the wheel hub and onto the chassis. It's actually a really clever system that makes plenty of sense with modern lithium ion battery tech. I can see this being a very useful and cost effective method of adding basic AWD to economy cars without all the extreme weight and complexity additions of actual AWD.

you could but it would be pretty bad, diesel needs compression ignition, petrol cant do that unless its a finely tune engine which is far beyond their capabilities. and unless you do diesel petrol diesel petrol youd introduce inbalances to the engine due to different torque profiles. all in all it would vibrate and destroy the crankshaft.
If you used a 90° diesel V8 and had one cylinder head with spark plugs instead of injectors, this would be the easy way. Send the four unused injector lines back to return fuel and have two separate intake manifolds. One for only air and one with a carb.
This is legitimately a good idea, most people only use 4wd when going at very low speeds, if it was geared a bit more so it has more torque it would be perfect. Compared to all the losses normally caused by all the extra driveshafts and differentials.
Reading the title, I thought it was a stupid idea that would never work, but then when seeing the application of it, it's quite ingenious and perfect for what it does.
Many tried already, but when you have to pay all the taxes and follow regulatios its way to expensive to make and adds to much unsprug weight so then your suspension also has to be modified
2:24 that laser welder lays down extraordinarily beautiful welds. It's the first time I've seen laser welding and I am super impressed with how pretty it looks, here's hoping it lays down a weld that's as strong as it is pretty. Edit: The system works extremely well, and it seems that the laser welder does indeed lay down high quality welds

Laser welding has advantages but it's not all around better than conventional processes. The weld and heat affected zone are very deep but very narrow. For very small weld or high alloy materials, it's great. For steel to steel like this, it's not an advantage.
@@otm646 yeah just looking at it it seems as though it would be unsuitable for the kind of structural metalwork I used to do, but despite its limitations it still produced a weld more than strong enough to handle the stresses placed on it in the video. I can imagine that using it in conjunction with proper heat treating post welding would mitigate some of the downsides of having a small HAZ, but I don't know enough about laser welding to confidently state that to be true. For things like bicycle frames, railings, and other applications where absolute strength isn't critical or is secondary to aesthetics it'd be far superior to arc welding just based off what I've seen in this video. Still for applications where strength matters most give me mma or tig welds any day of the week
@@otm646Wouldn't the main advantage here be to minimize warping? The downside to the ingenious solution of using the brake rotor as the main gear is that it's, well a brake rotor. Given the large surface area it should be more than strong enough but I would be curious to see how it all holds up after a few significant thermal cycles.

You could probably make some money from that idea. People that like to take their 2wd cars onto the fields to get firewood etc & the trailer could give a push if they started to get stuck.
This is how the Lexus rx400h works. The petrol engine drives the front tires only and the hybrid system drives the rear tires only. Its a divorced system. If you had a 24v system to the rear motors it would really add some power
@@martinsv9183 yes, a simple system with very little costs, less hybrid performance but very convenient. only a small motor and a small battery. a similar implementation is cheap because you dont need shafts and differentials. Alternator- motor-generators in mild hybrids don't have the AWD advantage and don't work in neutral either, you lose very important advantages
Close. It's actually a hybrid in the front wheels and electric only in the back. My dad had one and it could charge the hybrid battery while stationary via the engine, which would not be possible if the electric motors were only in the rear.
this is really useful, and some other situations where it would be good is moving the car on short distances without the need to start the engine, or in very slow traffic, in case the main starter fails you can push the car and go, or in case of an engine failure you can drive off the road.
So I grew up as the son of an auto mechanic, but he never taught me and my brother about fixing cars, because he did want us to become mechanics he wanted better for us, so I actually learned a ton from my Serbian buddy's father, who spoke zero English, and was still very very Slavic obviously. This reminds me of him, and those life long lessons. The guy was also sort of a mad scientist, he would fix, mend, and create the craziest things. And all of our communication was just actions, motions, and extremely broken English convos, or translations through the son (my friend). Thanks for the memories you reminded me of.
I think this is the best idea seen on your channel. It is very practical and you could sell this to people. Starter motors are series wound and that makes them perfect for the torque and RPM requirements of this application. If the motors are getting too hot, it would be easy to get larger motors.
Going to 24v and truck engine starters might be a reasonable upgrade if more power is needed. Maby add a small ic to disconnect the system when you're going over 15mph and put a time limit on it to not burn out the starters. That and a switch on the gas pedal so it activates without the manual button and you're done.
Absolutely incredible idea, and execution. What a good discovery. Wouldn’t be surprised if that started coming out as an option of these front wheel drive ICE cars. I have a “4WD” Honda pilot, it could have a transfer case, driveshaft, differential, axles, and fluid, all deleted and less weight for the vehicle. I put 4wd in parenthesis because it specifically states “only use in LOW to get unstuck and then turn it off as soon as you’re not stuck or you’ll damage the transmission”
Certainly in Russia and other Eastern European countries where Ladas are still a common vehicle. Then see if it can be done to a Skoda Favorit/ Felicia. 4 x 4 for really bad weather only.
This is a crude version of the AWD system used on Toyota Hybrids. The front wheels are connected to the normal hybrid powertrain, the rear wheels are connected to a secondary electric motor only.

This not only works it's actually useful. And it's actually even GOOD at what it does! No extra drag when not engaged and both motors turn independently. Only fast enough for 1st gear but that's really all you need it for. And a relatively easy mod as well. Could easily be implemented in 3rd world countries where something like this could be a life saver!
Great video ! I was thinking to do like this for tricycle in the Philippines so the underpowered tricycle can climb steep hills ... Should only use starter motors for short time because they are series wound and will over heat and burn out to easily. Like your videos so much always easy to follow for doing ant home like you are doing.
Some big name car manufacturers achieve "all wheel drive" in a similar fashion. Ice running front wheels and electric motor(s) powering the rear. Makes a lot of sense, and apparently works very well even in rudimentary setups such as this.

Fun fact, back in the days some steam trains actually used a system like that. Of course the main engine was steam powered but some types had problems with the wheels spinning due to the power and lack of weight. So they added a few batteries and electric motors to the tender (where the coal/water is stored) to help with starting it from a standstill

Such a cool concept cuz I really like how you use starter motors so they weren't engaged unless you needed to use them that is an awesome idea could probably make a kit to sell people that need to keep a cheap car but I'm sick of getting stuck in some snowy regions
Really fun idea. I figured this would work. I remember getting stuck on a hill in traffic with a hydraulic clutch that lost all it's fluid. I had to start in gear, going up hill, and it worked. If one starter can turn over the engine, and move the car uphill. Two starters on a lighter car should have an easy time...
Very good idea! It works like a hibride. You can use it with a sistem start and stop at the traffic lights, and from bar to bar. Reduce poluation. And if you need some boost on a slope etc.
That's a really well done experiment. If we use an electric engine like that one's are used on bicycles or motorcycles, it can be used on demand for 4WD or increase power and even be regenerative. This time you made a serious project
can´t belive it, you just built what I imagined years ago beeing a good option to convert cars to hybrid - gaining a very basic 4WD by it. Still see come hurdles to overcome until series production ;)
Now imagine if it was an actual 3 phase motor not a starter 😁 It's also fascinating that such a mod would have been plausible as a factory default at the time of manufacturing. Shame nobody ever put it together especially in a country where snow is the norm.
I have some conserns.. 1. Unsprung mass increases 2. Ring gear and starter goes where the shit from the road goes. 3. Duty cycle and enormous current. 3.1. In normal driving, it would not be a problem. You got stuck few times in a winter, if not being stupid. 3.2. You try to plow through unplowed road to your "summer" cabin for couple kilometers -> starters glow red and get snow thrown on them and crack and the batteries go flat and die. But, for an very occasional use in normal daily driving, it would be nice if it could overcome the problems 1 and 2. Maybe for a trailer, instead of the engine add-on they made earlier. Could even have some weight/volume capacity left afterwards.
Great Work, Always apreciate your ideas and practical trials too to make it clear if they are worth or not. I was just thinking to buy a very cheap used front wheel drive van to convert to a cheap camper but 4 wheel drive and was working , thinking on what are the ways and mens I could do it. I got the answer now. Anyways I was not thinking to make it a serious offorader but wanted only to just go anywhere kind of thing. Only thing is I have to take care of water wading with this arrnagment . This is great idea. You have that push when you are in trouble and this is it.
BTW: I considered something like this many years ago for slow moving traffic. You wouldn't have to keep the engine running all the time (apart from charging the batteries as needed). Would save money and decrease emissions and noise. And as a bonus, you get AWD for getting unstuck in tricky places.

Damn, this is actually genius. In my city, this system would be great! Because when there is traffic jam (everyday) the cars won't move faster than 20km/h This might save tons of fuel.
Now all you need is a weatherproof starter that doesn't overheat! Those exposed gears may also prove a problem and freeze up overnight? Great concept. On a long uphill icy road they may either drain the battery or overheat and give out???

I like the basic idea. Permanent all-wheel drive is rarely needed for street use. But, in a stuck situation, all-wheel drive is very useful. 👍 I would try this with pneumatic motors. What is the advantage of compressed air? 1) Public transport, and permanent installation of trucks. 2) You can't burn it out with overload, like an electric motor. 3) It's true that compressed air is only enough for a few meters, but with the same power, the compressed air turbine has less mass. Less mass increase on the wheel hub. In summary. When driving very slowly, or shooting out of a hole, the pneumatic system is better and can withstand more charging and discharging than an electric battery.
I knew this would work, when living in wales in the winter, many a time I had to move the car that was frozen by cranking it while in gear, it got me out of water 2 ft deep once too

All you need is a computer that turns on the engine when you go above a certain speed.
This would burn out the starters pretty quickly when not used intermittently.

Would love to ditch my transfer case and front "rear end" for 2 electric engines.
Most 4WD plug in hybrids are doing this but with a single motor on the axle that isn't driven by the engine.
A cleanly engineered retrofit little hub motor to get you out of the driveway would sell like hotcakes!!!

This is a crude version of the AWD system used on Toyota Hybrids. The front wheels are connected to the normal hybrid powertrain, the rear wheels are connected to a secondary electric motor only.

Such an amazing concept, I would like to see it with bigger starter motors, maybe from a truck or a bus and maybe with a bit of reduction they would even work better
This not only works it's actually useful. And it's actually even GOOD at what it does! No extra drag when not engaged and both motors turn independently. Only fast enough for 1st gear but that's really all you need it for. And a relatively easy mod as well. Could easily be implemented in 3rd world countries where something like this could be a life saver!

Great video ! I was thinking to do like this for tricycle in the Philippines so the underpowered tricycle can climb steep hills ... Should only use starter motors for short time because they are series wound and will over heat and burn out to easily. Like your videos so much always easy to follow for doing ant home like you are doing.

Some big name car manufacturers achieve "all wheel drive" in a similar fashion. Ice running front wheels and electric motor(s) powering the rear. Makes a lot of sense, and apparently works very well even in rudimentary setups such as this.
Bro this is actually something, imagine having a momentaneum 4wd system thanks to small electric motors. Its light, its cheap, its useful when needed. This is something man.
Or maybe an adaptation system for cars without 4wd that need it due to sand or snow roads.
A good application... At first I thought you would go for a 3 second to a 100 km car and thought that won't do nothing but for snow and mud it's just perfect love it 😍

Fun fact, back in the days some steam trains actually used a system like that. Of course the main engine was steam powered but some types had problems with the wheels spinning due to the power and lack of weight. So they added a few batteries and electric motors to the tender (where the coal/water is stored) to help with starting it from a standstill

This is actually such a good idea. Imagine being able to move your car without a running engine if its broke down and needed moved. That and all the obvious advantages covered in the video.

Such a cool concept cuz I really like how you use starter motors so they weren't engaged unless you needed to use them that is an awesome idea could probably make a kit to sell people that need to keep a cheap car but I'm sick of getting stuck in some snowy regions

Really fun idea.
I figured this would work. I remember getting stuck on a hill in traffic with a hydraulic clutch that lost all it's fluid. I had to start in gear, going up hill, and it worked. If one starter can turn over the engine, and move the car uphill. Two starters on a lighter car should have an easy time...
Very good idea! It works like a hibride. You can use it with a sistem start and stop at the traffic lights, and from bar to bar. Reduce poluation. And if you need some boost on a slope etc.

That's a really well done experiment.
If we use an electric engine like that one's are used on bicycles or motorcycles, it can be used on demand for 4WD or increase power and even be regenerative.

can´t belive it, you just built what I imagined years ago beeing a good option to convert cars to hybrid - gaining a very basic 4WD by it. Still see come hurdles to overcome until series production ;)
You created the biggest invention for fwd cars its a good idea and not so expensive to add for emergency.
This is your best invention I have seen. Try how bad place it can go when you engage starters before car stops.
Now imagine if it was an actual 3 phase motor not a starter 😁
It's also fascinating that such a mod would have been plausible as a factory default at the time of manufacturing. Shame nobody ever put it together especially in a country where snow is the norm.
You should package this and sell it. A lot of people could use it, it works like magic. On demand battery always hot

I have some conserns..
1. Unsprung mass increases
2. Ring gear and starter goes where the shit from the road goes.
3. Duty cycle and enormous current.
3.1. In normal driving, it would not be a problem. You got stuck few times in a winter, if not being stupid.
3.2. You try to plow through unplowed road to your "summer" cabin for couple kilometers -> starters glow red and get snow thrown on them and crack and the batteries go flat and die.
But, for an very occasional use in normal daily driving, it would be nice if it could overcome the problems 1 and 2.
Maybe for a trailer, instead of the engine add-on they made earlier. Could even have some weight/volume capacity left afterwards.

Just add axels and a diff attach a more suitable motor. That will eliminate some of the issues
Great Work, Always apreciate your ideas and practical trials too to make it clear if they are worth or not. I was just thinking to buy a very cheap used front wheel drive van to convert to a cheap camper but 4 wheel drive and was working , thinking on what are the ways and mens I could do it. I got the answer now. Anyways I was not thinking to make it a serious offorader but wanted only to just go anywhere kind of thing. Only thing is I have to take care of water wading with this arrnagment . This is great idea. You have that push when you are in trouble and this is it.

BTW: I considered something like this many years ago for slow moving traffic. You wouldn't have to keep the engine running all the time (apart from charging the batteries as needed). Would save money and decrease emissions and noise. And as a bonus, you get AWD for getting unstuck in tricky places.

Pretty hard to obtain patent. There are cars of this kind in production for some time.

Now all you need is a weatherproof starter that doesn't overheat! Those exposed gears may also prove a problem and freeze up overnight? Great concept. On a long uphill icy road they may either drain the battery or overheat and give out???

This worked way better than I expected.
I like the basic idea. Permanent all-wheel drive is rarely needed for street use. But, in a stuck situation, all-wheel drive is very useful. 👍
I would try this with pneumatic motors.
What is the advantage of compressed air?
1) Public transport, and permanent installation of trucks.
2) You can't burn it out with overload, like an electric motor.
3) It's true that compressed air is only enough for a few meters, but with the same power, the compressed air turbine has less mass. Less mass increase on the wheel hub.
In summary. When driving very slowly, or shooting out of a hole, the pneumatic system is better and can withstand more charging and discharging than an electric battery.
