Meiko dies waiting for Kaito to return. When Kaito returns, instead of meeting his lover he meets a demon. Without realizing the demon is Meiko he kills the Demon, which releases Meiko from the world so she can rest in peace, but Kaito grieves for her death and his ignorance.

It makes an interesting story if Meiko was a demon of that rose garden/area. Meiko has a short life or time on the earth because she can only live /appear during the summer (like the roses). Or... Kaito not knowing that asking Meiko to pluck a rose is the same as asking to pluck a part of herself.

(should have been followed by "die"? ;) )
or maybe he wanted to say "why did it (the demon I exorcised) have to be you" or "why have my beautiful dear turned to... huh, so you're actually a demon!?" hahahahahahahahhhhhh
