"I wanna be with the best because then I have a better chance of survival."
Makes sense, but it's a double edged sword.
When you're the best you also get the toughest, most dangerous missions. 🤷‍♂️

About getting hit in the butt: When Compton got hit in Holland, it went through his butt sideways and all the way through. As he was being evacuated, Lipton joked that one bullet left 4 holes.

What I'm always struck by, is how they remember everything so well. If you asked them what they did on a vacation a few years ago, they might struggle to remember what they did. But if you ask a veteran (any veteran really, especially one who's seen combat), those stories and memories are still so vivid for them. It's like they happened yesterday and they're easily recalled.

One of the things the producers discovered when interviewing the vets is that they didn’t like to tell stories about themselves but they would talk a lot about what the other guys did. Amazing and modest.

I met Donald Burgett who wrote four books on his time in D Company 101st.
Curahee, the road the Arnhem, 7 roads to hell, and Beyond the Rhine. He wrote the books in the 80’s. In one part of his books he said he often gets asked how he could remember things so well, so many years later. he wrote: If you lived through that, you would never forget it. His combat boots, uniform and Jump wings are in a museum in Frankenmuth, Michigan.

@@SamGray that perfectly describes the experience I had of my grandfather. Before it took effect and I was a curious little kid I'd ask him about it and he would tell me bits and pieces, deliberately skant in detail. Sometimes when I would stay over school holidays for a week or so I'd hear him have occasional nightmares and wake up screaming. Then when the Alzheimer's took effect and he couldn't remember any of us, those nightmares became more frequent and it seemed like those were the only memories he had left. It was truly heartbreaking to witness. He would say that he could "see their" faces. We never knew who he was talking about but I watched him pass away a haunted man.

I've seen a couple of these fences topped with broken glass. There's one on the edge of Baltimore; it looks like they put a layer of cement on the top and then stuck bottle fragments in that. Not as nasty as putting barbed wire brlow knee level next to the sidewalk; I saw that in Guatemala City.

Miss sitting in the 1940's Barrack's in PA with most of these Troopers listening too Maj. Winters talking about all kinds of topic's, We would be having a Prop Blast Bash (a wild mix of Vodka, Champaign, Sugar & lemon juice mixed in a GI gas can) he would be smiling and laughing while listening to Wild Bill heckle Babe who would start singing. Wild Bill would always give me grief when he saw me 'You get into Jump School yet, Sarg!!" (i was just a Grunt AKA LEG) late in the evening when everyone 1 was in good shape we would start singing "Blood Upon the Riser" , they would also attend the big WW2 weekend/Airshow in Reading, PA and Maj. Winters spoke at Ike's Farm in Gettysburg, PA had the honor of being on his escort he finally signed my copy of BOB and his wife was a sweet heart , he said too me "This better not turn up on Ebay" W/ a smile, she smacked his arm telling him to be nice to me as she gave me a hug. It was so much fun being around them all cause when they were together esp with our unit and other vets they acted like they were back in there 20's , and we ended having Troopers from all the other Airborne regiments also turning up in our barrack's made for so much story telling.

i think logically winters knew that he couldn't keep every man alive, but god, he felt like he could have if he were just that much more on the ball then he could've saved everyone in his unit. that kind of responsibility to heap upon yourself in a time of war is extremely heavy.

So glad you like history. My grandfather was a medic in wave 2 of D-Day. So I can only imagine what he saw. He wouldn't talk about It for years after. But, he eventually told some stories. And the strong man I knew broke down in tears.I had n ever seen my Grandfather cry. It gave me even more respect for him. He watched Saving Private Ryan. And he couldn't make it past the D Day scene. He said it was the most realistic battle on film. But still didn't come close to the real thing.

The references to the blowing-up of the Wilhelmina Canal bridge reminds me of another motion picture: "A Bridge Too Far" was a big-budget film made in the 1970s about Operation Market Garden, the invasion of the NL and the attempt to cross the Rhine River. The film portrays the detonation of the Wilhelmina Bridge just as 101st Airborne troopers were about to charge onto it. They are even a few scenes in Dutch, with the Resistance forces and elsewhere. Well worth a reaction video!

If you like to read, check out 'Beyond Band of Brothers' by Dick Winters. It fills in a lot of gaps, has extra battles etc. Very good. And of course, the original book by Steven Ambrose which the series was based on is a good read.
