  • Tom McComas Senior is a simple man with only a few indulgences: family, friends, and BMWs. Several months ago we profiled him and his son around a very special R60 motorcycle that has been passed down from when he bought it new to his son Tom Jr., Hollywood Stuntman, who rides it around the streets of Los Angeles to this day.
    That BMW R60 would be the machine that would start a life long love affair with the marque, leading to an exceptional circumstance around his son's birth, and a CS available to buy in Joliet Illinois. “I ran into the dealership and said to the man, “Don’t sell that coupe! My wife is in labor and I’ll be back in the morning to buy it.” As he was running out the sympathetic manager of the dealership said to his salesman, “If you don’t sell it to that man, you’re fired.”
    He returned shortly, bought the car, gave everyone in the dealership cigars, drove back to the hospital and picked his wife and newborn up "starting them off in style".

    The 3.0 CS Coupe nailed it. Something about the early 70's BMW's really captures the European essence of that era. I have never been a fan of muscle cars even as a kid I knew they were loud and vulgar. My first recollection of seeing a BMW was at the Devon Horse show in the early 70's. I could not have been more than 4 years old but I still I knew it was different, even much different than Mercedes and other European cars of the time. It was the 3.0 CS, and it was just waaaay more elegant than anything I had ever seen.. And while I have owned my share of BMW's and even now a porsche that is my favorite by far..

    • @jamesshunt5123
      @jamesshunt5123 3 года назад +2

      Well said.
      "I have never been a fan of muscle cars even as a kid I knew they were loud and vulgar." Where I live they tend to be owned almost exclusively by loud and vulgar people too, most of which seem to carry a lot of aggression and the need to overcompensate for whatever it is they may be lacking. At any rate not the kind of people I'd like to be associated with. Some of them are approaching retirement age too but still have a penchant for rural rockabilly culture. It's quite bizarre.
      "I knew it was different, even much different than Mercedes and other European cars of the time." I believe the Mercedes cars of that time were a bit too strict and designed with "engineer styling" for my taste. Too prim and proper.

    • @westelaudio943
      @westelaudio943 2 года назад +1

      Not a "muscle car" hater...
      But the BMW definitely looks better than anything the US put out at that time. It's style is "unique" to the brand and "timeless", as most BMWs "sort of" looked like that until the mid 1990s, without looking out of place. They would today though, but that's more of a compliment than anything else.

    Petrolicious, you make the best car candy there is. I’ve loved the E9 since I can remember. Two years ago, I finally bought one, a silver ’73 CSi with Alpinas. It’s been a dream. And it completely put me off new cars. My daily driver is now an E28 535is (also magical, and totally bulletproof). They really made amazing cars back then.

    Wow! I had a similar situation in my life. My housemate had a 1974 BMW 3.0si sedan (not a Bavaria, btw. same body style but Euro spec). Anyways, he asked me to move it one day. I had never driven a BMW before and didn't understand what the fuss was all about...until I got behind the wheel. I ended up buying it from him and drove it for a couple of years. It had a 3 litre straight six with Bosch d-jetronic fuel injection, leather seats, power sunroof, polaris silver, etc and some rust. I know exactly where this guy's coming from. That car left a big impression on me for life. Since then I owned a couple of 2002's (one of them was a '73 tii)...Sweet cars some of those 70's BMW's!

    I had a 1973 BMW Bavaria with the same 3.0 engine and hearing that engine sound, I kind of miss that car. Rust got to mine big time and I had to let it go. Hope that engine and transmission found a home as it out lived the body of that car. The coupes have always fetched a pretty penny, however if one wants the driving feel, any of the big six sedans from that era (2500, 2800, 3.0s and Bavaria) will give you a very similar experience for a fraction of the price. While they are not quite as sexy as the coupes, they are still an attractive sedan and a blast to drive.

    I had the 3.0s Sedan which is the same performance in a less fashionable four door body (which in my opinion was still striking).
    Overall nice car to drive, feels modern for a late 60s design and if you get a good one and put the right carbs on it, pretty dependible (the original Zenith downdrafts were a nightmare, go for Webers).
    Worst part about these: rust, rust, rust. A rough example could be a heart breaking life lesson, especially if you have to decare the body dead and the engine still runs like a watch.

    I worked at a BMW dealership in the seventies and eighties.. while I love the newer ones, there is nothing like those 70s BMWs. The 3-litre coupes.... 2002 and 2002 tii, even the 3 liter Bavaria were all awesome cars and great to drive. You either get it or you don't,..

    Beautiful BMW! And, what a garage full of classics. I don't know the joy of driving a BMW coupe, but I had a well worn 733i sedan with a factory 5 speed transmission. Man I loved driving that car!

    I love it!!! As soon as he opened the garage I saw the boxer cylinder heads and immediately thought "He has a Beemer squeezed between those Bimmers"
    3.0 cs and the E24 M6 are 2 of my must-own-before-I-die vehicles. The first BMW I ever drove was an E24 525i, then a sad old 525e followed by a 2002. I was hooked. My first BMW was supposed to be an E24 M6 but I balked at the last minute and kept my 2 year old Maxima instead.
    Big mistake
    Eventually I bought an E36 325i, skipped the E46 in favour of a 6 cyl C Class and then went back to E90 3 series. I am not a fan of any BMW in the forced induction era, no matter how much horsepower they make and how many creature comforts they add. All of the new cars have lost their soul. An E90 M3 for everyday driving, an E24 M6 for road trips and an E9 3.0 cs for weekend driving all in stick shift would be the perfect stable for me.
    Bravo Tom McComas, Sr., from a former N scale, HO scale, Lionel and G scale (for the little guy) enthusiast
