You are correct with your analysis of the meaning of how the thorns meant to protect someone also harms them. In this song I believe it about trust/distrust or love/love lost. Think of someone who is young and trusting of others until they are betrayed or deeply hurt. Like some someone who is in love and either their love is unrequited or they are betrayed yet still in love. Trust now turns to distrust and in order to protect oneself walls are built or in this case thorns protect something delicate like a rose or something precious, one’s heart or trust in others. Building walls too thick or too high or placing putting thorny trees around yourself not only protects you by keeping others out, but it also becomes your prison keeping you from trusting, loving or finding joy in life.
