On and off over the years, I've tried to decide between these two. In the most simplistic terms, I find Johnnie Walker has more character, but a little more harsh. Chivas is a little sweeter, easy-going, a little smoother, less harsh..... I prefer Chivas!
I believe the JWBL was designed to be drunk with some ice and it really shows. The Chivas Regal is an all rounder. Drunk straight, I tend to agree that the Regal has a fruitier taste. In comparrison, the Black label gives a slightly bitter burn corn grain spirit note, not particularly pleasent? Adding water however changes things dramatically. The Black Label shows far more complexity and range of tastes. The Chivas simply falls apart when water is added. The Black Label with ice really brings out the best of this. Sweet charred Smoke, fruity and as you say, salted toffee,. If I was at a party and walking around I'd have the Chivas. If I was sitting at a party and ice was available it would be the Black Label.
BTW, have you heard the advert for the JW Double Black? (I hear it on the Whisky Cask podcast). It is something like "Double Black...new...pushing the bounderies just like our master blenders have done for hundreds of years...." Isn't that just brilliant marketing? I am so impressed. In one statement you get the message "this is something new and exciting" and at the same time "This comes with history and Scottish tradition....". Absolutely brilliant!
@@joeyjuandiaz6195 I recently had the same experience with Jameson's Irish. I was sitting at an outdoor Shabbos Shul kuddush after davenin, under some olive trees here in Jerusalem, and the gabei brought out a bottle of Jameson's Irish straight from the freezer!!! It was delicious. Sweeet, cereals, creamy vanity cakes, apples...I was embarrassed by how much I enjoyed this cheap blend. The next Shabbos, they had left it out of the fridge and I drank it at near room temperature (I added some cold water). It was bitter vanilla, spirit harsh with a saccharin aftertaste. Yuck.
I always keep both these bottles stocked in my cabinet. Both are very enjoyable for me. My palate is not as sophisticated where I can pick up distinct fruit in whisky. I do pick up tastes like caramel, vanilla, chocolate, toffee, sugar, peat, smoky, spice, etc. For that reason, I tend to enjoy Black Label a bit more because the smoke is distinctive on my palate. However, there are times when I just want the lighter easy going Chivas.
I am still new to whisky . I m a coqnac drinker . But for whisky like u , i like chivas . Esp . Royal salute . But heavy on the pocket . So settle for 18 yo . For normal times
Am drinking chivas regal and watching the review, the chivas is a lot smoother than black, I just love both are my favorite But chivas is definitely the winner
I have both bottles at home and you can't go wrong with either choice. The Johnnie Walker Black is good if you want a smoother darker bitter taste, while the Chivas is definitely more subtle, is lighter, and has a fruit taste. No one complains, so, it's whatever you are in the mood for. What bothers me is that Johnnie Walker Red's flavor profile has changed in the last three or four decades and it's much harsher, while the Chivas Regal older aged offerings are much more expensive. What can you do, things change over time.
Very drinkable whisky's but I prefer single malts. Good thing about mass produced, readily available whiskys like this is that you are pretty much always guaranteed the same taste and quality in every bottle.
Great work mate. I like black for the cooler weather and I like smoky rich full strong complex Whisky . I like CR 12 in the hotter weather. It's lighter and lovely too but a shorter finish. For me JW black label is the winner. Just more my style. Cheers
oh, also, i really like that you were very specific that the winner of this taste test was the winner for your palate, specifically. for example, i think i'd prefer the jwbl, from the description alone. great review! thanks
Hi Joe, I've been a single malt fan since a trip to Edinburgh in the early 1980's. My first taste was at The Ensign Ewart, a pub on The Royal Mile next to the castle. When I asked for a recommendation for a good whisky, I received about 5 simultaneous replies, all different. Two whiskies, each extremely different in its own way stood out-Isle of Jura 10 year old, and Laphroig. Although extreme opposites, I enjoy each for its unique flavor experience to this day. In your comparison of JWB & Chivas, I see that you expressed a preference for the light, floral notes of the Chivas, and I tend to feel the same way about Scotch Whisky in general.
Hi johnny guitar thank you very much for watching and leaving a comment! That's the beauty of whisky, everyone will have different preferences and recommend different styles! Also that's another great thing about whisky! You'll never get bored of it because there are just so many different styles! Yeah, I'm on a big Speyside hype at the moment and am enjoying the more summery styles of whisky! :)
***** Hi mate! Thanks again for commenting! I love the interaction I get on these videos! It's what I enjoy most! Yeah, I completely agree with you that Bourbon and Canadian whisky have a much narrower flavour profile. It's because they all have to use brand new American oak so you're always going to get a limited flavour profile. If you've never had Laphroaig I'd highly recommend trying some!!! :) Ardmore is a great shout too!
Hello mate! For an unbiased thorough tasting test you need to eat a slice of apple followed by a slice of gouda and then a glass of water to "reset" the tasting buds. Nevertheless, i trust your reviews and i went with Chivas too. Even diluted, Johnnie is too "raw" for me. Cheers!
Oh bro. I like chivas not only 18 y0 , but also got 12 yo too , n johnny walker xr 21 n its 12 yo double black . Self drink wont be that expensive . Please note its my personel opinion . Both are great . If not i wont buy . Thanks
Johnny Walker is great but it tends to mess me up more in the hangover than Chivas. Don't know why? Chivas takes a little getting used to. At first I didn't like it much I preferred Johnny Walker. Now that I appreciate whiskeys more somehow I've changed perspectives. At a friend's bar once he ran out of Johnny Walker Black Label so I asked him for Chivas 12 on ice and wow I couldn't believe it. I think the twelve is ment to be their starter whiskey for cocktails or casual drinking. Compared to Johnny Walker Red Label it's far better and does compete with Black Label even though it's cheaper somehow?
i like the chives. I don't like peaty whiskies so I'm kind of biased. But with the johnny walker i could taste a slight (rubbing alcohol? I don't know the term) which made it feel really cheap.
+Daryl King Hey Daryl! Hmm, if you don't like peated whiskies that's probably why you don't like the Johnnie Walker as it has a very subtle peatiness to it!
I tried both, these are the first 2 blended ones I tried. I do like the chivas, might replace the glenlivet 12 year old. i'll have to do further testing and research lol
When you say that you could taste rubbing alcohol in Johnny Walker, are we talking about the Black label or was it by any chance the Red label one that you are referring to? Just checking. =)
Entertaining review, mate. Me? JWB, neat. Side of selzer thank you very much and I'm good to go. But will try the CR12 soon thanks to you. Carry on and cheers! - Jersey Guy, vocalist
aggarwal545 Hi! Thank you so much for watching my vid and leaving a comment! I would not recommend keeping your Black Label in the fridge. Whisky should be drank at room temperature for full enjoyment of the complex flavours. If you chill whisky you actually numb the flavour and you won't taste all the complexity.
This is supposedly a side-by-side tasting, but it seems you are more into perfume than into liquid. I bet your nose got a nasty hangover! Thanks for smelling. I know I seldom if ever DRINK the damn stuff, I just like to smell, that is the most important thing. I'm glad your actions and your nose agree. At parties, no one ever gets drunk anymore, we just sit around and smell the stuff. I wonder if your nose will one day develop a bad case of Scotch cancer. Your nose will be in my prayers, not your taste buds, they seem to hardly come into contact with the stuff.
@@WhiskyWednesday Thanks, I will put Chivas on my list, but I meant bitter finish, like you know whisky has this bitter taste which keeps me away from bourbons and similar stuff. I have this sweet tooth, such that I find CC Spiced and Soco Black appealing! cheers
The JW will be more intense as it contains peated whisky. If you have such a sweet tooth, Chivas is a good start. Perhaps even Haig Club would be a good start for you.
On and off over the years, I've tried to decide between these two. In the most simplistic terms, I find Johnnie Walker has more character, but a little more harsh. Chivas is a little sweeter, easy-going, a little smoother, less harsh..... I prefer Chivas!
Chivas is definitely smoother and a bit sweet. When I want to relax and enjoy a drink I go for the chivas
I don’t always drink scotch, but when I do I prefer chivas
Thanks
Chivas has been my choice for more than 65 years . A great whisky

Maybe have ten people drink each one without telling them the brand. Then you can get a true test of what folks rate the best.
i'll be honest my favorite part of this video is just that you spend nearly half -- more than half? -- just smelling and discussing the aromas

Which better taste black lebel or chivas?
We prefer Black Label.
Chivas Regal is other level

+Tadashi Ishihara Hey there! Thank you so much for the comment. JW Double Black is a lot peatier than JW Black label.
JW awwwwww at any name but chivas the best ever
I've never done a side by side tasting before. Did the smoke from the JW Black not influence the lighter Chivas Regal?
Matt Aspinall it's definitely worth doing a side by side tasting! No, the smoke from JW Black didn't influence the Chivas much!
+Whisky Wednesday One always effects the other when you don't cleanse your palate after the first. That's common sense...
JWBL IS TOP!!!
I like to add some Laphroig to my Johnny Walker Black.
Extra smoke for you.
@@WhiskyWednesday yes indeed! I am a big fan of Islay whiskies.
You should have included Dewars 12yo.

And pls dont forget Jack Daniels! 😍🥰
Jw black label on ice Is better
Then Chivas just don't let the ice dilute it wait a minute only then drink it.
I have both Chivas and Black Label at my table :) Tasty drinks :)

too much drama.
