- A tour of the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning from a 2007 visit by John Ratzenberger to Pitt's campus. Snippets include a look at the Cathedral's Nationality Rooms, the grand Commons Room, the Frick Auditorium, the Honors College on the 35 and 36th floors, the resident Peregrine Falcons, and the cleaning and restoration of the Cathedral stonework completed in 2007. Also featured are looks at the ironwork contained in the Cathedral by master blacksmith Samuel Yellin.
Pitt Law '07. My best memories of the Cathedral are studying in the main hall during the winter with the wood fires roaring. Every so often a worker would come to throw another log or two on... it's almost surreal that in this day and age we have a place like this to offer the world. 60 foot arched ceilings in the main hall, hand-wrought iron everywhere. Maze-like staircases and corridors. Hail to Pitt!!!
Always proud to be a Pitt grad (Class of '71) but even more proud to have my daughter Autumn graduate Pitt Law School in 2019!
I can remember spending plenty of days/nights studying in that place. Hail To Friggin Pitt! CGS 2000
just got accepted and its one of my top choices so far
Congratulations! I hope you like it as much as I did.
Never knew about this marvel! Thank you. Another reason to get back to Pittsburgh.
Magnificent building! I was there many years ago. I can only imagine what it must be like in the winter with the fireplace aglow. I think that at least makes my long bucket list. I recently heard that the original plan was to build the cathedral 52 stories rather than 42. But, since the building was constructed during the depression, lack of funds forced Pitt to build fewer floors.
Thanks for posting this. I love Pitt, it was very nostalgic the year I graduated. I am looking forward to Alumni reunion and hope I get a job at Pitt and I move here.
A wonderful tribute to my Alma Mater! HAIL TO PITT!!! Class of '83.
Class of ‘83?
Did you know Cocaine Dan???
🫵🏼😳❄️❄️❄️
Real art truly does exist.
A high rise building that's attractive and original.
Actually, it is still mostly academic, but classrooms utilized by undergrads are pretty much either at the bottom five floors although there are scattered classrooms on 12, 23, and the Honors College is on 35 & 36 is undergraduate. The floors in between mostly house academic departments and centers (including their meeting spaces and graduate programs). True, the library, studio arts, gym are now housed in their own buildings and this allowed other departments to spread out or be repurposed.
i'm heading to Pitt as well this fall at the Bradford campus

Hail to Pitt
The chancellor's office used to be at the top - with a private elevator. Now, if one of the kids had a master key that would operate any common elevator...........
No harm no foul.
i'm here right now!
Theres no way its only 535 feet..
it looks like hogwarts
It was named the school that most is most likely to be hogwarts as voted buzzfeed. Even beat out the school harry potter was filmed in
