    Interesting to see this, the Tesco near me also used to have a similar upstairs restaurant overlooking the shop floor. Sadly it closed in 1996 when the store was extended and moved to a smaller cafe the shop floor (then itself went after a few years). They also boarded up the windows and removed the stairs and lift up there- which clearly didn't happen here. Sadly they built a new Tesco Extra next to it in 2006 and demolished the old store, so it's all long gone now.
    I remember the lift up to the restaurant, it was bizarre- it had manual doors, the ground floor ones were ones on hinges you opened with a handle, and the restaurant floor, on the opposite side of the lift, were like cargo lift doors you had to slide open. And you could open the doors while the lift was moving, which would stop the lift, and the shaft was covered in graffiti as a result (which you could see through the lift windows). I was gutted when they took it away! There was also a horribly 80s photo of a family eating at the bottom of the stairs leading up. Wish I could find some photos of the interior of the store from that time!
    Also love that this store kept the 80s red tiling and the cream and red stripes around the edge of the store, even though the matching aisle signage and the old logo outside the store had been replaced and made other changes, don't think I've seen that anywhere else! They always took them away at the same time they replaced the aisle signage or changed the logo outside at every other store I've known. Certainly my personal favourite style of Tesco decoration (including the matching aisle signage... which sadly had gone from this store). Again, vanished from my local store with the 1996 refurb (and from the town centre branch when it also had a refurb at roughly the same time), though another branch near me still had the stripes and old aisle signage (but not the red tiling) until quite recently.

    I cannot describe how EPIC this place is. A GENERATOR ROOM! So sad it's getting pulled down. I know of 2 EPIC 60's - 70's sites that are getting pulled down soon. In the next 20 or so years, there will be barely any 60's - 70's buildings.

      This place was amazing, ever since it has been fully abandoned. Vandals have destroyed the place and made the place worse. I really wanted to go there before it closed but my family lived in Ireland and I’m too young to be travelling alone. Rip Tesco Chatham 1970-2023

      It has been abandoned a long time. New owners have taken over it, so we will have to see if it gets converted or pulled down. It won't be able to reopen in its current state as copper thieves have stripped the place.

    You should try coming back with some engine bits like oil, diesel, batteries, etc and try to get the generator to start.

    • @benolifts
      @benolifts  Год назад +4

      It previously would have been able to start, all it needed was for the battery to be charged. But copper thieves came and and removed loads of copper from the site and drained the fuel and oil from the generator. This video was filmed a while ago. The place has since been trashed.

    Sad that this is probably be the last time we see footage of this building but at least we finally see the final part of the urbex of this building.
    Also you should do a video in Crawley as for some reason pretty much all the big town centre supermarkets and department shops are now gone and abandoned like there's a really big morrisons that was built in a old car park in 2014 and now abandoned apart from a travalodge and cafe that are still open. There's also a abandoned sainsbury's with an argos next to it and in county mall debenhams is completely abandoned and the last time I went past the shop still looked in good condition and still some shelfs it's very weird

    • @benolifts
      @benolifts  Год назад +8

      It will never be able to open again now that the copper thieves have striped it. The building will have to be converted into something else or pulled down. I hope it isn't pulled down as the quality of the building is far better than any modern day building. It is over engineered and heavy duty. It is built of both concrete and structural high quality brick, unlike today's buildings where the bricks are just cladding and not structural. The outer walls are made of 2 layers of brick, plus a layer of concrete, then a 3rd layer of brick after that. The walls are about 70 cm thick. Then on top of that the interior is concrete framed. No building will ever be built like this nowadays. A modern building will be a cheap concrete frame with cheap outer cladding.

    That is stupid. they could have converted some of the car park levels to shops and made a shopping center or something else. Big, usable buildings like this are pretty much never demolished in Bulgaria. I don't know what are those "councils" you have in the UK that seem to be owning a large part of the buildings judging by your videos, but they must be incredibly stupid and wasteful in order to demolish completely good and usable buildings like this and many other ones.

    • @keith800

      Problem is we have more and more shops shutting down and remaining empty , not far away from where this video was made is another shopping mall with multi story car park above (The In shops) that is now being demolished and to be replaced with blocks of apartments ,.it seems dictated by economics at the end of the day.
