Back in the day, Red Sox Manager Johnny Pesky said, "When you're winning, you sleep better, eat better, beer tastes better, and your wife looks like Gina Lollobrigida". She was on everybody's mind!!
Was he a Pesky Pole? 🙄
With good reason!
The Sox didn’t win much when Pesky was managing.
I loved Gina in "Woman of Straw," with Sean Connery, released around the very time (of this WML, June 1964 airing). Well bless her pretty heart - Our Gina turned 95 on July 4th, 2022. May all of us be so lucky as to see age 95. Cheers to all! (P.S.) As a post-script to my comment of five months ago, I just wanted to send some prayers and good wishes to Miss Gina who passed on just two days ago - January 16, 2023, at age 95. My goodness, what a great career and life she had. RIP dear lady.
You beat me to her age now. The picture she refers to co-starred Rock Hudson, the title 'Strange Bedfellows' is doubly ironic.
Steve Allen. Maybe the most likeable man I've ever seen in entertainment.
Goon.
Chris Hayes reminds me of him
What top 6 characteristics would you say Mr. Allen possessed?
I'm interested because I didn't know of him. He seems to be all that you said!
Love this programme even though they are all deceased wonderful people Rest in Peace
Gina Is Always beautiful in her 95.
@@fabianofonda6758 all gone now
@@peternagy-im4be That is not very nice thing to say - Gina is alive as of May 2022.
@@peternagy-im4be GINA or LA LOLLO as she is called in her native ITALY is still with us.
The best panel lineup. Steve Allen is such a plus.
I agree. This is the best panel composition. Steve Allen was perfect.
I love it when Steve Allen is on. His first wife, Dorothy Goodman, was my father’s first cousin. I never knew them, and I don’t know how they ever met or why they divorced. But his second wife was a jewel. She was sometimes on the show either as a panel member or a mystery guest. They made a fine and long-lasting couple.
Indeed he is. Such a versatile talent, his presence enhanced everything he was part of.
Steve ‘I think I am hilarious, but actually, I’m not’ Allen.
addictive help cant stop watching
+Kerry Baca me too...
Me as well!
Very!
Yep today I've got through April, May and now into June. How many's that? Ten, twelve episodes?? I need therapy.
Racing to the end. Gotta get to 1967 then I'll get a life!!!
@@davidsanderson5918 I know. But I only watch the episodes after they no longer used the dreaded perp walk and before Dorothy was killed.

Simpaticissima , splendida GINA LOLLOBRIGIDA e parla un ottimo Inglese !!!
Beautiful Gina💃, Italian best representative star💫✨🎇!!!!
Gina Lollobrigida - such a huge star in that era!
Dorothy is always fantastic on this show. :)
+KaptKan1 Actually she died of poisoning in her own home, but yes she was about to expose the Warren Commission.
@@moorek1967 she died of an accidental overdose unrelated to the Warren Commission
@@preppysocks209 You're very naive my good friend.
She is also beautiful and charming. So sad of her demise in 65.
@@userid579 And you, my friend, are falling for the sensational.
Always enjoy Steve Allen's humor
Only his quick wit could come up with, upon learning of the lady's garbage truck diviving occupation, "We could have stayed here all day and not got wind of it."
He's wonderful
@@thesixshooter6506 Daly's "I think that wraps that up" was equally quick.
About as funny as toothache.
Dorothy is the only non-native French speaking person who would pronouce chaise longue correctly. Brava.
Pomposity on display
That's because she was sober that day, lol wild parties, if she was missing from the cast she was out on a news story or drying out. Very sad.
Gina è un’altra delle bellissime e classiche donne del cinema; l’orgoglio dell’Italia!
Watching Gina I have to remember to breath. THAT is a GLAMOUOUS movie star. Keep breathing fool.
Agreed, I think she was more beautiful the Sofia Loren but not as gorgeous as Claudia Cardinale . I rate them Claudia, Gina and the Sophia yet Sophia was the most famous of all. I guess she was a better actress.
@@Etnalleb Claudia and Gina were more traditional beauties with quite even features. Claudia has maintained a fairly active acting career doing respected work, but mostly in Europe. She had a long-term marriage that ended only with her husband's death a few years ago. She lives in Paris. She has always been active in charitable causes for health and human rights. Gina continued some film work, but moved to Canada with a husband, and in recent years has lived in Rome and Monaco. She began a photojournalistic career 40 years ago so did less and less acting, but continued having many affairs. She sold all her jewels a few years ago and gave the millions in proceeds to stem cell research. Sophia was the more exotic looking beauty and she had a stunning acting range that fellow performance/film/theater artists the world over marvel at and respect. She has not worked much in the past couple of decades and lived quite a long time in an area outside of Los Angeles while maintaining her home in Italy. Her orchestra conductor son performs all over the world, so she can see him there when he's in Europe. Her film producer, director son lives in the Los Angeles area still and is married to the actress who played Kate in the early years of "NCIS." She had the more unusual looks and powerful roles.
Bennett got the functional equivalent of a free question when he started questioning Gina Lollobrigida. When he said that the audience gave the guest the kind of reception that is accorded a sports figure, the audience laughed. He then said, "Obviously it's not a sports figure." John was going to give Bennett a "no", but Bennett objected, saying "What? I didn't ask any question. I made an observation, John." John said "I have been had" and returned the score to none wrong. John had indeed been had.
Absolutely it was a free question but he didn't deserve it. If you mention that you think someone is in a particular line of work and the audience laughs derisively at you, that means you can eliminate one field of endeavor. You've gained information.
Actually she was known for her sporty build.
The Heart of Midlothian Football Club that Danny Ferguson played for during most of his senior career is more commonly known as "Hearts". They are the oldest football club in Edinburgh. They were formed by a group of friends from a dancing club that was named for a Walter Scott novel.
I played some competitive soccer when I was in high school and became a bit of a Hearts fan for a time. In June 1974 as part of a trip with a team from my university, I stayed with a nice family in Edinburgh who were Hearts fans. This happened to be while the World Cup was being played in West Germany and the Scottish team had the misfortune of being in the wrong draw and were eliminated in the Group stage despite not only not losing any games but also not surrendering any goals. I learned a lot more about the sport as it is played on the world stage at that time and have become a huge fan of the sport, especially during the World Cup, ever since.
It's been 5 years since you made this comment but maybe you will see this and know the answer. I found Danny Ferguson to be such a compelling presence, I looked him up and discovered that he died in his late 30s. Do you happen to know the circumstances and cause of his death?
@@SOLE2SOUL The only available information on the Internet is that he died in 1977. There is no information about the cause, circumstances or even the exact date of death.
Crazy for Gina! What class!
Love this show. This cast was the BEST!
Dorothy's dress reminds me of a Tim Burton movie 😂 I love it♥️
I thought it was an old circus marquee.
This program should of never gone off the air....But then again all these highly beloved people have passed on R.I.P.
Gina is still around and still sassy.
I think it was revived in the 80s, but it wasn't the same. I think Arlene was on the show to give it credibility, but it didn't work.
The ratings were in the toilet in the final season, one of the bottom ten least watched programs on the air.
Fascinating time in our media history.
Gina Lollobrigida would turn 37 on 4 July 1964, just 20 days after this WML? episode aired. At the time, she was still married to Dr. Milko Skofic. (Sadly, the marriage would end in divorce in June of 1971, after almost 22 1/2 years of matrimony.)
Since a previous commenter noted that Gina Lollobrigida had appeared in a number of English-language films before "Strange Bedfellows," beginning with John Huston's disastrous "Beat the Devil" in 1953 (she played Maria Dannreuther), I will note that the other English-language films in which she was a cast principal between that film and "Strange Bedfellows" are as follows:
TRAPEZE (1956) - as Lola
SOLOMON AND SHEBA (1959) - as Sheba
NEVER SO FEW (1959) - as Carla Vesari
GO NAKED IN THE WORLD (1961) - as Giulietta Cameron
COME SEPTEMBER (1961) - as Lisa Helena Fellini
Following "Strange Bedfellows," she made three more English-language big-screen movies:
THE PRIVATE NAVY OF SGT. O'FARRELL (1968) - as Maria
BUONA SERA, MRS. CAMPBELL (1968) - as Carla Campbell
KING, QUEEN, KNAVE (1972) - as Martha Dreyer
She also appeared on U.S. television in the mid-1980s: in five episodes of "Falcon Crest" in 1984 (as Francesca Gioberti), in a TV movie titled "Deceptions" in 1985 (as Princess Alessandra), and on a two-part episode of "The Love Boat" titled "The Christmas Cruise" in 1986 (as Carla Lucci).
Gina was sooo beautiful ,vivacious💃,multi talented and self assured A wonder!!❣❤🩹💖
The perfect panel and host
Listen to that loud applause when Gina Lollobrigida when came on. Well worthy of them!
Just too bad her first appearance as a Mystery Guest on this show doesn't exist anymore. That one was the special color episode, broadcast live from CBS Studio 72 in New York on September 19, 1954. Steve Allen was there, in his last appearance as regular panelist, before Fred Allen replaced him.
Her 1954 appearance on WML was also, apparently, her television debut.
One gets the feeling that Bennett spends the remainder of his Sunday nights after the show, reviewing all the questions he asked, searching for any possible 'unfair" answers.
Todd DePue - I never saw any evidence of that. In fact, every time I saw Bennett get a "no" answer he always smiled. I doubt Bennett was that petty.
@@shirleyrombough8173 he certainly is very petty and argumentative.
He really drilled Colonel Sanders, just a regular contestant, about Fried Chicken paired with mint julep....and the Colonel had not said that at all....he said anything could go with his product ( fried chicken), you should look it up
Beautiful diva, Gina Lollobrigida. : }
We'll be seeing the lovely Gina again on the New Year's Day 1967 episode, which was videotaped on December 4, 1966. At that time, there were floods plaguing her native Italy.
Gina is 93 years old only one still living from this episode.
She passed away January 16, 2023.
These panelists were so smart, especially Dorothy.

Gorgeous Gina
The first guest walked out like she took a Xanax first.
Gina looks a bit confused when answering her own questions. She seems unsure about being there with her darting eyes.
Gina era tão popular nessa época e pelos aplausos calorosos da platéia que Bennett Cerf perguntou se era algum craque de esporte.
Arrivederci Gina!
This is the third female garbage truck driver I have seen on WML which seems like a lot as I have only been binge watching for the last 3 nights.
Only beaten by the hundreds of female bull fighters
Don't forget the female barbers!! And female policewomen and judges.
I loved the episode with the nun dentist!
RIP Gina Lollabrigida.
R.I.P. Gina Lollobrigida
Danny Ferguson died quite young in 1977, just 13 years after he appeared on WML
Wow..Gina Lollofridgidaire looks pretty
And has survived them all.
Once again Dorothy spoils the fun ..
Gina Lollobrigida !!❤💙
Following the race horses around, we stayed in an old hotel with Murphy beds, how comfortable!!
Gina didn't shake hands with Daly as she walked off... seemed pretty nervous and "off"
"Strange Bedfellows" would open in the United States early the following year, on Wednesday, 10 February 1965. In addition to Gina Lollobrigida, the cast principals include Rock Hudson, Gig Young (who appeared on WML? as a guest panelist once each in 1958, 1959, and 1961), Edward Judd, Howard St. John, Dave King, Peggy Rea, and Joseph Sirola, with interesting camo roles played by Nancy Kulp, Bernard Fox, and Terry-Thomas (speaking of a connection to recent WML? episodes).
The movie was directed by Melvin Frank, with a screenplay by Mr. Frank and Michael Pertwee (from a story by Mr. Frank and Norman Panama). The music for the film was written by Leigh Harline; the cinematorapher was Leo Tover; and Gina Lollobrigida's gowns were designed by Jean Louis.
("Strange Bedfellows" would turn out to be the next-to-last film that Melvin Frank and Norman Panama would collaborate on the story and/or the screenplay; the last would be "Not With My Wife, You Don't!" in 1966.
(Also, in 1968, Gina Lollobrigida would once again star in a movie directed and co-written by Melvin Frank: "Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell." By the time that film was released, in December of 1968, "What's My Line?" would be in its first season of the syndicated version. And no, Gina Lollobrigida did not appear as a Mystery Guest on syndicated WML? during that first season.)
Anyone else wonder how Dorothy came up with Lola so quickly?
Rather suspicious if you ask me!
Who is Lola?

The original Fab Four panel back together again.
I do believe Ms Lollabrigida is walking with a pronounced limp and trying to hide it. At one point she leans on the panel to steady herself.
Stunning.
RIP Gina.
I never heard of a crib being used outside, the wooden kind with side rails and mattress. And the maker of them looked at Daly for an answer...doesn't he know? He makes them.Alot of those people on this show act like they don't have a clue what they do at their job.
People weren't so media-savvy then. They didn't even have their photograph taken that often, much less appear on live television. Most of them are just a bit embarrassed.
He sells them NOT makes them … please pay attention. 👨🎓

Love Dorothy's hair do, she looks comfy.
The men stand and the women don't. A very different time.
Yes today we have more gender equality, fortunately :)
When the contestant was older or associated with a religious occupation the women rose as well.
@@shirleyrombough8173 And royalty.
13:55 -- one of those rare moments when appears on the screen the piece above the entrance decorated with cartoon workers and the game name.
Absolutely beautiful woman
Cerf was "splitting" his questions into two with the Scottish guest. "are you involved in show or tourist.." when those 2 can be interpreted as separate questions and John was right, it's too broad. Then he follows up with "is your uniform used for show or athletic purposes?" when that also can be separate. Nothing serious. And gotta love it when the guys in the audience reacted when Gina walked in. You KNOW it's a beautiful woman as a starting point haha
Dorothy, like Bennett, checked the stars in the celebrity pages, who were in town during the weekend. Sadly, the celebrity guest was quickly identified, thus depriving the audience of hearing the guest trying to defeat the panel.
la lollo is beautiful!
+elchoya100
Notice how, when she makes her entrance, the shot zooms in just enough so that TV viewers see her only from the waist up.
Am I alone in thinking the garbage-truck driver has a lovely face?
Dorothy:"Are you Gina Lollobrigidi ?" di? I guess she mis-spoke.
When the panel guesses who the mystery guest is with only 3 or 4 questions then it makes me believe they already know who the mystery guest is.
Newspapers were the primary form of information. Mystery guests came from the news-making world. Dorothy wrote a column on the entertainment industry. Arlene was a theatre, film and television actor. Steve was also and Bennett co-owned Random House. This was their world. Not only was the Broadway stage popular, but movie stars made personal appearances to publicize their new films, which opened in cinemas located right alongside the ‘legitimate’ ones. ( Sadly most of those movie palaces are no more. )
As I understand from watching previous episodes, the panelists would speak aloud in frustration trying to recall from reading the newspapers who was in town and making headlines.
Dorothy was an intelligent, focused and very competitive panelist. She tells us matter-of-factly how easy it was (for her): the mystery guest was a 1)non-blonde 2) foreign 3)actress visiting NYC. Bennett had seen Miss Lollobrigida’s picture in the early edition of Monday’s paper.
They knew who was in town, 8 or 9 daily newspapers in those days
That's because they always put a guest on who is currently working on a new show on Broadway or attending a movie premiere, and they narrow down their questions based on recent hype.
Gina didn't give Daly much of a farewell. No hand, no eye contact.....niente.
Maybe he had halitosis.
I've always admired Gina❤but, undoubtedly Italian people are much less educated, amiable, respectful then American's ( Sophia, Mangano, Magnani...) I'm italian, but I can see that it is a rude, lower colture👎I guess....
"You're not a blonde? Well then you must be Gina Lollobridgida!"
Dorothy looks great. I like the big hair.
That Scottish soccer player/footballer Danny Ferguson was born in 1939 and died in 1977.
hopicard how awful!
Obviously, Kilgallen was a good investigator.
4:00 -- Steve Allen starts the show and the first contestant. In 1954 in this situation, he would have some pre-written Gambit questions. Here in the Carefully Regulated Ethical Game Show Era, he starts off with a no answer.
soulierinvestments Very true. He still gets in a few good, solid laughs in this one, though. He always does. :)
A naturally funny man. A real gift.
When Fred Flintstone was in Venice he passed under a "Gina Lowlabridgeada".

Gina obviously could not understand what was going on.
Dorothy’s hair is cute here
Dorothy's Empire Line look is lovely, I think :)
Sheila B: Exactly! Only a very slender woman can pull this off & she does so beautifully. She was ahead of her time style wise and didn't mind pushing the envelope in cutting edge fashion. It's even evident in her questioning, when she asks the crib seller, with distinct French pronounciation, if he deals in chaise lounges. Even John Daly seemed impressed with her precision of language.
What gives with Dorothy's hair on this one? Extraordinary.
I think it looks nice. IT is her high hair period. Many had this look then including Jackie Kennedy.
This is part of the joke back the day of why it took women so long to get out of the house. You had to put the hair in curlers and then you had to use a comb and what was called tease the hair. You then combed it up and down to break the hair follicles. Then you had to hair spray it gently into place keeping the volume and the height and not squishing it down. Mass quantities of hairspray were used at this time, used to come in cans that were about a foot tall.
Ms. Kilgallon wore a wig.
Boy, despite that dress or maybe because of it, Dorothy is hot game-player tonight.
Interesting what Steve Allen says at around 22:15. He says it in jest but I was just thinking before it how Steve used to have extended scope to concoct progressive questioning that got him nowhere and it was really funny. In fact they were some of my favourite segments. Somehow he never got the opportunity to get going in this
I think the show has indeed changed!! :)
In the 50s Steve was fed lines by the producers that they knew would get laughs. This was called "gambiting". They ended this practice during the game show scandals to dispel any notion of impropriety.
@@ryanmoralesaz In one particularly egregious example of gambiting, Steve Allen asked a snake trainer if he could wrap his product around his neck.
I wondered... maybe you did too! 😬
Geritol's claims were discredited in court findings as "conduct amounted to gross negligence and bordered on recklessness," ruled as a false and misleading claim, and heavily penalized with fines totaling $812,000 (equivalent to $5.57 million in 2023 dollars), the largest FTC fine up to that date (1973).
18:23 Gina was so beautiful. Even Arlene Francis had a concupiscent look on her body
... even Arlene Francis had a concupiscent look in her eye - a desiring look/expression
Same here, wish the audience would not cheer and whistle when celebrities appear giving a clue to the panel Gina Lollobrigida did not have a chance same with Anita Ekberg.
"We'll begin the questioning with Miss Olene Francis."
