I was in 3/75 from 92-96, and remember all of that starting. We started with putting the big mag lites plumber wrenched to an M16A2, unless you had a CAR15. Then the smaller lights with pressure switches came along, with the red dot sights. Everything was iron sights back then. It seemed like we were transitioning from the Vietnam type mission's Ranger, to a Special Operations Ranger...and, more than just being a blocking force for the Hardee boys. NCOs started getting sent to schools like SOT, SFARTIC, and to certain TIER 1 units for training. 3 of us even got sent up to Dam Neck, Va. to learn from the Naval Special Warfare (Team 6). What a great time to be at the regiment.
@Bestrong1 I got to see so much going on in the world because of Intel we were getting. And, I got to see the Regiment start changing their METL in order of precedence and training. My son went to Bco 3/75 in 2013, 17-21 years after I was there. The same company that was in that Somali debacle. But, he came to a completely different Regiment that I served in. The missions have evolved.
There are certain Colt 723 configurations that Unit Snipers used that if you dropped an NGAL or PEQ-15 on in place of the PAQ-4C, would be superior to 99.9% of what you see today. Free-floated with either the 12" OD fiberglass tube or Aluminum tube with FSB pocket cuts, suppressed with Ops Inc can, VFG with integral buttons for IR Laser and Surefire, rail in the carry handle, Aimpoint or LPVO, "CAR-15" cheek piece, Lone Star Ordnance enlarged pistol grip, sharktooth butt pad, improvised 2-point sling with ALICE Pack bottom QD strap and tubular nylon.
I really really, appreciate the awesome B-roll with the Black ops music in the background. Felt like I booted up old school black ops, and was setting up a class with the commando.
The adjustable rear sight is the A2 carry handle uppers and the ones in the movie aren't correct to what they actually carried. Your A1 style upper is closer to what the Delta guys carried
He has a correct C7 upper with brass deflector. The movie had incorrect Colt 727s, which were what SEALs and Ranger Regiment replaced their 653s with in the mid-1980s when M16A2s, SAWs, and M855 came into the force. That required 1/7 twist for M856 tracers, so the older Colt 653s with 1/12 twist couldn't support the new ammunition. CAG got 723s, while SEALs and 75th Ranger Regiment got 727s through SOCOM contracts. JSOC purchased their carbines and weapons through totally different supply channels. 653s and later 727s were issued to key leaders, RTOs, RRD, Mortar Team Leaders, etc. in Ranger Regiment, while most hooahs carried M16A2s. SEALs replaced their M16A1s and Colt 653s with 727s across the board, and configured a certain % of them with M203s. That drove the requirement for the step on the forend of the barrel. 723s were originally configured with .625" journal pencil barrels but with 1/7 twist. SFOD-D shot those out within 2 weeks and started using 727 barrels as the standard replacement, which is why you see almost all of their 723s with 727s barrels.
I built a similar looking rig. I put mine together nearly 10 years ago. Like you, mine is retro inspired, not 100% correct. I have an Essential Arms J-15 pre-ban carbine so the gun itself is the right vintage. I have the same mount on the carry handle with an Aimpoint Comp M3. I found a small rail that slides onto the bayonet lug and a flashlight clamp that puts my light at about the 4-5 o'clock position. I went with an O-light Warrior. I still need to add the pressure switch. I added a single point sling attachment at the base of the stock tube and found a really nice single point sling made of braided 550 cord with a quick release buckle. I also added a cheek rest to the top of the stock to bring my eye up in line with the Aimpoint. I have though about a camo paint job but the rifle is kind of an heirloom so I don't know if I ant to paint it.
FWIW, PSA sells stripped lowers with proper markings for M16A1, M16A2, M16A4, M4, M4A1 and 727 and 723 rifles. Very reasonable prices. They have "US Property", correct model markings and "safe/semi/burst" or "safe/semi/auto" safety-selector markings.
Hey thanks for sharing your build I've been putting together something very similar I've not really done much in terms of content but I'm tempted to share some of the process or at least discuss the concept and it's performance some of my decisions with this setup etc. I actually went through the trouble of hand fitting the mount so that it could pass through the area between the gas block and I intend to do a paint scheme once test phases are done I'd just like to ensure everything is rock solid.
Going to do the same with my norinco CQA. Only big aesthetic problem is the fact that the carring handle is not fixed. Hope it does not influence the shooting
Yeah idk if wrapping the sling around the front sight directly is a good idea unless it's heat resistant like a Vickers sling or something. I would use paracord - it's a cleaner look too.
Old style hand model video LOL The A.R.M.S mounts are out there so keep looking. I have found them on SARCO and APEX sites every now and then. Last ones I found at a gun show for $20 a piece. Army surplus stores is where I find most of the real items like scope mounts, rings, etc. I try to find the real stuff and don't want to settle for the Chinese mounts.
I noticed videos over a year old, but I don’t think you said where you got the upper from. If you don’t mind telling me, I am working on a old school meets new school 14 .5at the moment.
While the movie showed A2 uppers (as you described), your rifle is actually more correct to what they were using with the A1 upper. The Colt 723's that Delta used had the same upper yours (see Larry Vicker's 723). I would rather build a clone like yours that is period correct vs movie correct. Only other Delta item you could add is the Lone Star Ordnance Original "stowaway 2" Pistol Grip which someone is selling the clone for $20 (B5 CAR15 LS2) and is more comfortable than the A2 grip. Your Gothic Serpent build is better than most I've seen.
@willblackstone4862 haha no problem. Definitely don't go to TNTE website and look at their retro c7 uppers 14.5 pinned and weld. For sure won't find anything similar to what is in this video
I am always confused as to whether should should be built on an A1 or A2 upper. In _the movie_ "Gordy's" gun was on an A2 upper. In real life? Seems like "clones" have been built on both.
Your upper carry handle is actually more clone correct in real life. The movie had it wrong. If you look up Larry Vickers Car 15, he goes over that. Beautiful build man, great job.

Great Intro and nice carbine. US Military carbines are my favorite builds. I just got done with a XM-177E2 build.
It's cute how clean that is. Like a freshly waxed lifted Jeep.
