Great idea using the maltpipe and filter as a massive spinder.

Very interesting. Some years ago I raised some hop plants from seed and after a couple of years in pots I planted them out in local hedgerows. Sadly most turned out to be male but about four grew into vigorous female plants with an abundance of large cones. I've never actually brewed with them fearing a disastrous and expensive experiment. The tips in the video have given me confidence to have a go in a hopstand. Only this year in conversation with a venerable brewer I mentioned the uncertainty I felt in how to best judge the use of green hops. Simple, he said, pick a good handful of hops and make a brew with boiling water in a cafetiere . Let it mash for 15 mins. Push the filter down and sample. This really does allow you to select between the flavours and aromas of different plants. It's also a very palatable hop tea as a bonus. Incidentally the plants are growing well in the North West, not a common native up here. Global warming?

Using the grain basket as a big hop spider is such a great idea!
I’ve often struggled with slow transfers after big whirlpool hop additions. Not any more!

Reminds me of the English IPA I made last year with local wild hops. It was great! I’ve still got some left in the freezer so might make it again soon.

    What an excellent video👍
I have just brewed an ESB and put freshly picked hops in. Some had gone a bit brown but I am hoping it will be a good 5% plus beer.
    Cheers and thank you👍👍👍

Great video. I brewed my first green hop beer from foraged hops down here in Kent a few weeks ago. I used Muntons Hopped DME as the base and steeped the hops like you did. Didn't quite turn out as well as yours, but now I'm thinking the hops weren't quite ready and I needed more as I only used about 180g in 19l (which seemed a lot at the time). Hopefully next year's effort is better for me. Cheers!

What batch volume was this (for 1KG of wet hops)? Thanks

So if I want to forage my own hops and dry instead of using them green, would that still be a 5 to 1 quantity over hop pellets?

You can use these as you would normal hops buddy, just remember that they will only be good for whirlpool or dry hop as you wont know the Alpha
