The Sturt / Port clashes nearly always provided great entertainment....Sad that many great players , who played in this marvellous era , are no longer with us ....I much prefer this style of football to today's .
I know that Sturt had a disappointing year in 1977, but they were still the only team that could certainly beat Port Adelaide who were the eventual SANFL premiers that year. I'm only thinking that Sturt had an off year that year, after winning almost the impossible premiership in 1976. The efforts & extreme hard work in winning the 1976 premiership would have drained Sturt in 1977. Sometimes it happens to premiership teams after so much hard work that it's hard to get back up again for the following year & so on for the short term. Sturt in 1978 were back to their brilliant best, where they lost only one match until their nightmare in the Grand Final....
That 1978 loss must have been infinitely worse as the year's went on and Sturt never won a major SANFL premiership again until year's after the competition was neutered by the Victorian led monolithic AFL.
