THE MOST INCREDIBLE VIEWS OF GLACIER NATIONAL PARK: HIKING AND CLIMBING MOUNT SIYEH AND SIYEH PASS

  • Siyeh Pass and Mount Siyeh are among the best hikes in all of Glacier National Park. Mount Siyeh is Glacier National Park's most accessible 10,000 foot peak and it may be the easiest of them to climb. Perhaps the most spectacular part of this climb is the 4,100 foot drop from the summit of Mount Siyeh to turquoise blue Cracker Lake below. Siyeh Pass via Piegan Pass trailhead at Going to the Sun Road is another great option as this trail climbs over 2,000 feet in 5 miles. The reward of hiking to Siyeh Pass is views down into Otokomi Lake, Saint Mary's Lake and multiple peaks in the area. This pass is definitely one of the most beautiful areas in Glacier National Park.

      @@TheMountainMatt we were there last year. Had one clear day after it stopped raining and was beautiful. Then the next 2 days the smoke from the fires was so thick you could barely see the Tetons. We did the Jenny Lake trail into Cascade Canyon which was fun. Saw 2 bears and 2 moose. Want to go back when it’s clear. From the Moulton barn the Tetons were barely a shadow

    The grizzlies have figured out that army cutworm moths shelter under the rocks on Siyeh to escape the heat. That's why you see so many up there flipping rocks.

      Most peaks in Glacier are accessible it’s all about the individual’s experience level and desire to summit. Some are easier than others. Some have huge approaches and some are right off the road. I have multiple apps and research far in advance for the adventures depending on the experience level of the people I’m with. Awesome that you stumbled across the channel! I hope the videos are helping with your own adventures! Thanks for the kind comments. Yes, almost all summit pushes will eventually lead you off trail. The summit blocks usually are a maze/labyrinth of rock to navigate. I do TONS of research of any objective that I plan on doing. I use multiple apps and websites to help with that. The more you know the less shenanigans there tends to be at the summits. I always have at least 2 downloaded routes to follow just in case. Most apps I use have decent gradient indicators to help with not getting cliffed up. Start easy and work your way up as climbing takes time to get used to and good at. Elevation and exposure can be a tricky for each individual. All my routes can be found and downloaded on AllTrails. Search The Mountain Matt and you should be able to find it. Also, get 30% off an AllTrails annual subscription thru the link of any video description. And yes 😃 we’re from MN …. for now 🤣! Feel free to contact me if you any other questions, Cheers!

    • @TheMountainMatt
      @TheMountainMatt  Год назад

      It’s basically straight up after 3 or 4 miles of hiking. There are parts that if you slip or fall while climbing could cause serious injury or death. That being said the foot and hand grabs going up are good. It’s a decent class 4 scramble from the valley floor. Once you reach the ridge there is that massive cliff down to Cracker Lake but you can stay back as far as needed. It’s a tough climb if you’ve never done anything like that before and the route finding going up can be tricky. To this day it’s in my top 3 for sure 👍🏼😁 cheers Jon!

      8 days is a great time frame for Glacier as you can almost guarantee a day or two for bad weather. We’ve had a complete rain (week)out 1 year and the next perfect weather. Both in August. Love your videos; you do a great job! 👍
    I'll be in Glacier in three weeks and am planning to attempt Siyeh... I've got Blake Passmore's "Climb Glacier Park" book with color photos of the route and GPS waypoints (though I'm at this point unclear on how to use waypoints, or which app to use; considering paying for AllTrails Pro to download offline maps... just not sure I really need that?) 🤔
    Just wondering how much trouble you guys had in route finding? I've chatted with a few other people who have summited Siyeh, and they told me it's comparable to climbing up on your kitchen counter in the steepest sections of the cliffs. The crux of the climb looks a bit sketchy, and coming down (safely) is my biggest concern, as it will look a lot different than going up.
    Did you and your son get lost at all, or use any offline maps or GPS? Any advice you have would be appreciated.
    I'm kinda thinking as long as it's not foggy and we can see the thumb nail scree field at the base of the mountain, that should keep us from getting too far off route climbing up and down the creek beds/gullies?
    PS- We will have bear spray! 🐻

    • @TheMountainMatt
      @TheMountainMatt  2 года назад +1

      First off hopefully you get bears up there in the distance 😂 it will only add to the greatness of this hike😁. I read Blake’s book about Siyeh several times, which definitely helped. I also use Alltrails Pro for every hike just to be safe, it seems to always come in handy, and it did that day as well. When we met Daniel he had been much more to our right going up, and said that there were better defined trails going up where he was going down… I hope that makes sense 🤔. We did go down closer to where we saw him. It did have a tad better defined spur trails. If you’ve done any kind of class 3-4 climb before than you should be fine 👍🏼. Lots of foot holds and grabs. I always try to over-prepare for big days like that and it sounds like you do as well👍🏼. No way points needed, it’s pretty much keep going up. I liked our approach which brought us to that first overlook. You might be able to download my map from my Alltrails account. I think you just need to search my name? If you can download my map, let me know 😁 I’d love to know if that’s possible! I’m fairly certain it is. Let me know if you have any other questions 😁👍🏼!

    • @greatestshow99

      @@TheMountainMatt I will definitely pay for AllTrails Pro in the next week or so; offline maps may come in handy on other hikes as well --hoping to also do Iceberg Lake, Grinnell Glacier, Dawson-Pitamakan, and Swiftcurrent Pass/Lookout-- and expecting lingering snow fields on all of them; could be challenging finding the trail in spots? ⛄️
      I noticed while watching your video that it appeared you guys climbed up to the "left" of the large scree field/"thumb nail" at the base of Siyeh; Passmore's route is more off to the right, the middle and right of the three gullies I believe. I've heard from others that the way you went up can be much more dangerous class 3-4 versus class 2-3 on Blake's route. We will definitely try to stick with easier and safer, but I may take a look at your map before we attempt it 👍
      I definitely want to climb up the upper scree portion of Siyeh near where you guys did above that ridge overlooking Upper Grinnell Lake and Salamander Glacier. Looks to me like the views along that cliff wall are fantastic all the way from the ridge to the summit; hopefully the bears will allow us to go that way versus more "in-land." Just don't get too close to the edge while climbing and enjoy the views 😲
      I was last in Glacier in 2018, and we also summited Oberlin, though we went up the scree route rather than the climbers route you all did. We also did Grinnell Overlook off the Highline rather than The Loop, and then went up to Banff in Canada and summited Devil's Thumb above Lake Louise. Definitely recommend that hike --one of my all time favorites-- if you're not familiar. I do think Siyeh will ultimately become my favorite if we're able to get up there and live 😉🤞😬🐻🥵 Siyeh will likely be the toughest hike I ever try. Gotta get myself up there, because as you know, it's absolutely incredible 😍

      16 and 13. We've been training them for years now, pushing them a little more each season. Now they're scrambling and rock hopping like it's nothing. We tried to start them young enough so now they don't even realize how tough some of the adventures we are doing actually are🤣. Start her young, just ease into it 👍🏼 just make it fun and they'll love it!

    Have you ever climbed mt Ruth in the north cascades?

      @TheMountainMatt  Месяц назад

      I just got back yesterday from Washington and Ruth was on the docket but it was terrible weather up near Baker all week. We ended up chasing the sun all over the state for 4 other bangers though. I've got Ruth and Icy still on the list for the future. I'd love to see the view of the Shuksan massif.

      @@TheMountainMatt we did Ruth last year. The glacier was unusable. We went up the back way. The Wally Bahl route. Took 2 days but we did it.

      That’s great that you still made it! Glad to hear there’s other routes up. I think we’ll be attempting it one day. I’ve yet to be in that part of the state. Ben has been up Baker multiple times and he’s mentioned making a run at Ruth in the past👍🏼. The weather up near Baker is so tricky.
