YAY! I love your videos! You did an amazing job! Don’t forget to oil your case on the outside to make sure it is waterproof and conditions the leather. :) Thank you for the plug and I’m so happy I could help you to make your case! I’m a big fan so this is a wonderful ego boost and pure compliment. Thank you.

The moment at the end, where the twig kept getting in the way and your reaction. I burst out laughing. There is just something about the contrast of the medieval looks and contemporary behaviour, that I think is really charming. Thankyou, well done on completing your leather purse. Many years ago, l purchased a leather lady bag, purse, whilst staying with my great aunt. She was delighted with bag, explained to me that it was a pigs skin bag, very thin, fine leather. Years later, doing charity work, l visited a Roman site. They explained the process of leather, part of work, entailed scraping the back of the leather. It was steeped in dyes, which were not healthy, for the people working in the tannery. There was a well, which was out of bounds to the public, as concern if contaminated by dangerous bacteria, due to past tannery processes. The olden type glue, used for purses, were also varied. Making one purse would be enjoyable. Where as years ago, a person may be fully employed, all their life, so breathing various glues, may have been a disadvantage. We are only now, beginning to fully appreciate, all the skills, involved in making many leather items. Another explanation, that perhaps poorer population, had purses made from old sacking material. Lovely phone holder. A treasure to keep. Best wishes for all your future craft making.☺️🌈

Don't put leather in or near any sort of heating elements or near a fire to force it to dry faster, it ruins the leather, makes it shrink too much and can warp. You can however, use an ordinary fan blowing room temp air on it.
This gives me an idea to make a stout pouch for my cell phone. I would rather wear it from my belt, but I don't like the modern equivalent of the clip on backings. I was going to crochet one, but it would be too floppy and would not protect the phone very well. I want to put something like small carabiner clips or large lobster claw clasps on it to click it onto either my belt or belt loops to my pants without having to remove the belt on and off when I want to add on or take off the case at will.

1:43 . Eek! no the marble slabs are used for tooling. That's a bad idea for the same reason glass cutting boards are; every time the blade hits the marble it would dull so much more than when it hit wood and might even chip the corners if it hits just wrongly enough. I think you chose well in lieu of a cutting mat or other such item.

I have this idea of a future life of mine where, while not necessarily dressed in period costume--save a shift and bathrobe, cuz that's how I kind of do things now--I'd have one of these to carry not a cell phone (I do not own one and probably never will), but all those weird little things I find I need during the day--pen, paper, nail clippers, tweezers, debit card. It would be there, accessible and look way more cool than anything else I can think of.

Skiving as in the thinning the edges of using a skiving knife. In the modern UK has come to mean being lazy. But as pointed out in the video it is a lot of work. This may have come to pass because skiving is a skill that commanded extra pay, and better working conditions creating envy in the other workers.

Question: both your walk through and Ms. Hicks' videos show the glue being used liberally on all layers - but the lid separated from the case layers when the lid was cut apart. Which layer is glued just to the bottom case portion? Is it the third layer? And do you apply the glue just to the case part, for more control? Forgive the probably dense questions, please and thank you.

    • @LadyLiveLol

      Meagan Wallwork
I've contacted some tannaries about scrap leather, and have gotten a couple of pieces for very cheap. I've only made a couple of purses, needle cases, shear protectors etc, so I use only small pieces, larger pieces can get more expensive again. If you have the space to store it, I would reccomend to get a whole tanned hide, since it usually is cheaper than individual pieces. There are lots of different quality leather on the same hide, the thicker parts can be used for shoes, while the thinner/more damaged parts are nice for reinforcing or smaller projects.
A friend of mine tried using vegan/faux leather, and the marking (pønsling) didn't work nearly as well. I have noticed some of my (modern) items made of vegan leather have worn out a lot faster than the same item in real leather with the same use.
