Seriously, this is such a good way of thinking about a makeup "collection", especially considering that yours is very minimal compared to most people on youtube! There have to be people who own a 1000 years worth of eye shadow!

I've noticed that you and I both have the highest numbers in products that have different colours: eyeshadows, lipstick, blush and bronzer. The other categories might have different formulas but there's not much else between them: mascara, setting sprays, powder etc.
I view my colour products differently. They're like the spices in my pantry rather than the staple flour or sugar. I'll never use up a complete jar of paprika or cinnamon before it expires, but I'd miss having it very much of it wasn't there.

I agree. Anyone that likes or suits different colours will automatically have more coloured products than someone who only wears the same 2 shades of neutral. It's just common sense and people shouldn't be judged to comply with some artificial standards. I have quite a few more blush colours I rotate through than people who don't care about blush or wear only 1 style of make up. So what? Same w lips and eye shadows. Companies could release smaller product sizes if the waste is a concern as it isn't me the consumer deciding how much they put in the pans. I'd love buying mini sizes of things.

I love this parallel! I never would have thought of such an analogy, but it's so true! I've stopped guilting myself about having lots of colour cosmetics - especially powders since they last longer. It's my hobby and I love it and some things in life are simply meant to be enjoyed

Same. I have so much more in the way of blush and eyeshadow than Sarah but for me, it's all about having the one i want when I want it. Then again, I only have one single sample sized setting spray and I don't really buy primers , bronzers or sprays. Have not been buying blush, highlighter or lipstick for a couple years now, but when I whittle it down a little, I might treat myself to a Lisa Eldridge lippy.

I'm glad you made this video Sarah. It really puts things in perspective. For reference, I have 632 eyeshadows, 179 lip products, 90 blush/bronzer/highlighters. It's more than enough which is why I've been doing the no buy thing for a couple of years now. And let me tell you. It is the best feeling to not worry about buying makeup anymore. And oh so satisfying when I fully finish the products that I do have.

Video! For those of us who consider Cosmetics as a hobby oh, it's important to be comfortable with potential wastefulness. Every time we buy a product there's a risk that we won't be able to use it whether it's not the right color or the formula doesn't work for skin. Eyeshadows are particularly that way because we may like specific Shadows in a pallete but not all of them.

Eyeshadows with pan should count for half!😊
It's tough to estimate because if you use your stuff, then nothing is full/new, and so the time to use up, say a half-full lip gloss is going to be less than using up a full one. Then you have like a tenth used up, or a quarter, and so on. So, really, these are upper limits if your usage stays around the same amount for all those future years... Really interesting to think about.

I used to have a very minimal amount of makeup, then went through a collecting phase, lost it all in a fire, started minimal again, then went crazy again. I like to find homes for my mistake (unopened or unused) purchases and those I tried once and didn’t want to use again. It seems like such a waste if no one gets to use them. Those that are unopened and unexpired can be donated to some women’s shelters. But I have no idea what to do with the rest.

Something to think about, if you have 459 eyeshadows, you use 2.8 a year, you keep all of these to use for the next 10 years after which you have to discard it because it's is too old.... You'd have to throw out 431 eyeshadow in a decade. That's a lot to throw out. Not trying to shame but this does enlighten us about how wasteful makeup can be, if we own too much we can't use up in time.

    • @marielle7505
      @marielle7505 Год назад +1

You're right. Nevertheless, I don't think eyeshadow palettes are things you actually use up. If I pan about half of my favorite shades in an eyeshadow palette, I consider the palette finished and I will toss it. I would not want to keep a palette when my favorite shades are gone and I'm stuck with the few colors I like a bit less or that don't form a cohesive colorstory without the finished shades. I don't think I am alone on that, so I don't think that it's reasonable to completely finish a palette. There will be some wasted, that is inevitable

    • @lainelee3632
      @lainelee3632 Год назад

@@marielle7505 yes I find it hard to pan let alone finish an entire eyeshadow. I've never finished any. I'll toss out products I've kept for a very long time, there's no choice but to do so. There's no shame in having a bit of a larger collection, if you can afford it. For me, a have some categories that are fine: I have three concealers and I only use one bronzer untill it's gone and then I open a new one. Blush is alright, I own about five of them. Highlighters I only have two, which I'm completely happy with. Lipstick...mêh...twenty might be a bit much.
Doing great on foundation, which is a though category for me. I only have five at the moment. Eyeshadow palettes is another though one; I own more eyeshadow for one lifetime with about fifteen palettes. Although I do feel satisfied with what I own now, so that's great. The point is that eyeshadow palettes almost never run out, so the collection doesn't really get smaller naturally. My current problem area is perfumes. I own about eighteen of them at the moment, but I still regularly catch myself feeling the urge to get more. So maybe there's some work to do there.

  • @imaginarycosmetics

I think this is so interesting! For eyeshadow in particular, I calculated it in two different ways. I know that if I use an eyeshadow consistently it'll take me 4 times as long to finish it as it took for me to hit pan on it for the first time. If I use this as a metric and the eyeshadow I took the longest to hit pan on (69 months) it'll take me 17 more years to finish it. I still have fairly old eyeshadow I haven't hit pan on yet tho'. Based on my eyeshadow use-up stats I finish 0.8 eyeshadows per year and with 91 shadows that translates to 109 years worth of eyeshadow.
I've finished 0.88 lip products per year, therefore it would take 20.5 years to finish my 18 lip products (I'm pretty close to finishing some tho')
I purchased my first and only bronzer and blush (since I started doing makeup inventories) in 2020 and I think I'll finish both this year. I'll stick to one in both categories. If I want a different cheek color I use my eyeshadows or lipsticks.
The only coverage product I own is a concealer and it lasted me more than 3 years, but I think I might finish it this year.

This was inspiring. I made my own inventory and i got worried also just because i don't wear makeup everyday like you and i have a lot, A LOT of things in my makeup box (for my non makeup routine).
    I have:
    -9 eyeshadow palettes (3 of them are 9 shades pans and the others: 10, 12, 12 each) :( ,
-4 blushes (not so bad, one of them is small),
-2 highlighters (one pinkish and one champagne, also not bad),
-one foundation (very good!!), one concealor ( :) ),
    -one mascara (yay!),
-2 powders (not good: I have dry skin, I almost never wear them!!),
    -3 eyeshadow sticks (not bad),
-7 eyeshadow singles (well... at least one of them i can used it as an highlighter),
-2 lipsticks (one red, one nude: not bad),
    - one lip oil (i really like it)
-3 (2,5 :) ) lip pencils (also not bad, i used them often with some lipbalm, even if i'm not wearing makeup),
-2 eyepencils (one black and one brown) and that's it.
Oh, for my eyebrows i use eyeshadow. And i don't use primer (I use almond oil instead), I don't wear bronzer nor contour (I have pale olive skin and everything turns orange on me). Oh, and i don't wear those sprays things for setting makeup.
This was an humillity exercise for me, for sure. I only wear makeup 2 to 3 times a weak...
That said, I think I have much more eyeshadows because i never did quite knew what looked good on me. I'm cool, pale (very ,VERY pale) olive: some pink eyeshadows look like I have pink eye, most warm browns look like orange and yellow on me. Purple... it depends: I only can wear warm purple. Blue, I only like it frosty. Peach is fine! Was always difficult for me to find a good palette for me. i also don't like glitter. However, I have found a good eyeshadow pallete for my skin tone. Its from Kiko Milano (soft nude 03). Its a good one for me!
This was great to watch. And one more thing: you have an youtube chanel and you wear makeup everyday. So I think that your collection is much more justified than mine is... Thank you for sharing your process with us. It was valuable!!

i love this video idea! no need to feel bad about having a decent amount of makeup. you’re a beauty content creator so it’s absolutely understandable. and it’s nice to have some variety in a collection to avoid getting bored but not to be so overwhelmed that you never get around to using some products.

Eeek! If makeup didn’t expire I’d truly be set for life with eye shadow, blush & lipstick 😅
I know I have more than I need but I also bad at using up those products so I think that’s also why I have a lot. I love them but I can’t finish them before expiry 😳

Woo I have 111 years of eye shadows lol. They are my weakness.. its actually a little less then I thought I'd have. I have about 40 years of lipsticks too, but I think I go through more then you do so it could be a little less then that. I finish at least 1 a year.
I buy makeup not thinking about using it up. I don't want to waste makeup, but I do have fun with it and there are quite a few items that I know that I will never finish, They are fun when I want to wear them. For example I have a purple lipstick that I rarely wear but when I do I enjoy it. Will I finish it haha no but its fun for now.

What I really appreciate is that bottom line your makeup collection isn’t out of control. Every once in a while I see recommended to me an influencer that has an absurd amount of makeup and they do a declutter. Sometimes I start to watch other times I just can tell by the thumbnail that it’s a crazy amount of product. I try really hard not to judge others. But just thinking about the amount of waste that is going into the landfill hurts my heart. I am not an influencer so I don’t know what it is like, but I really appreciate you and others I watch keeping your collections more realistic and manageable. ❤

My foundation, concealer, mascara, and brows are all less than a year. Blush, bronzer, highlight, lip products & eyeshadows are really out of control. 🤣
I probably have too many primers, powders and eyeliners too, but maybe a few years worth.

I'm thinking of doing that, because the jar PAO label on mine is ridiculous for how much I wear makeup and I started thinking about how I could use it up and reducing the other "makeup fixing" products like primers
