To watch my first ever review I reference in this video go here: ruclips.net/video/hpaXW2on9Ks/видео.html it's cringy for me to watch, but I might do the remaster thing to it.
I apologize for some of the visual and sound glitches in this video, my editing software sucks, and puts glitches in my videos sometimes for no good reason. not even re encoding the video makes them disappear, the software just decides to mess up on it's own. The glitches weren't in the original footage.
Many compilations have unique versions of "retro" games as well. Secret characters and levels, practice modes, bugs fixed, new bugs related to hardware ported, changes to soundtrack, uncensored features, censorship added, unlocked framerate, widescreen options - and so on. I mostly find out about unique features in such compilations when investigating a specific game. Being aware of every version with their differences feels like another layer of challenge for gaming historians and collectible enthusiasts.
I guess you're right. I've never thought that deeply on the matter, but I do know that the PS1 Midway Arcade compilations were actual ports of the games, and not emulation. It's kind of strange when you think about it, emulation was either too primitive at the time, or the PS1 couldn't handle it, so they just directly ported the games to the PS1 hardware for the Midway/Williams Arcade's Greatest Hits compilations.
I absolutely love these compilation games also. There's a few in here that I missed, so now I gotta hunt those down. My current favorites are the Capcom releases and the Midway 1, 2 and 3 releases.
There are still so many great ones to discover. Someday I'd love to import the Sega Ages collections from Japan, assuming they aren't the price of a kidney now.
Activision Anthology gets an A+ from on me presentation, having 80's music blasting in the background and the games being shown on a CRT tv may not be a huge thing but it adds so much to the experience. Great video!
I've always had my eye on Capcom Classics Collection Vol 2 for awhile now. Lots of really awesome looking games on there. I may even try to track down Vol 1 too now. To this very day I still miss Midway Games.
Personally I love compilations, I'm playing the Capcom compilations on my PSP, I'm really digging the TMNT Cowabunga collection. I really love the Fatal Fury games.
I have/had some of these collections on either ps2, xbox or Wii. While you are correct the ps2 has the best SNK compilations by far, those prices are creeping upwards in price. Like the King of Fighters orochi collection for ps4 is now cheaper (on disc) on ebay than the ps2 original... thats bonkers. Also a heads up for any modern day gamer (Xbox one/series, ps4/5, switch), so many SNK games are available on the digital stores referred to as "ACA", dozens of neo geo ports.
I'm aware of those as I've bought some myself. So far I've bought Shock Troopers and Sengoku 3 but there's definitely others I would like to get. Shock Troopers is a badass game.

I will eventually get the Cowabunga Collection, and the Atari 50. There are some good modern compilations for sure
Capcom vol 2 blows away vol 1 imo, but my absolute favorite is Taito legends 2
