I am one of the biggest Holmes fan in the world, but that was no damned slip, that was a big-time knockdown. These were men of war. Boxers today have no clue what it is like to be masters of the sweet science.
Holmes looked to the ref twice towards the end to ask him to stop it. Holmes was a great fighter and a real gentleman with it. Maybe the best heavyweight ever.
ya he was a tough hombre...he would stayed there to he was practically dead if the ref didn't think he was done. amazing to see a Heavyweight fight with this much action
You're the first person that I've ever seen question the legitimacy of the 9th round knockdown. That was as clear and devastating a knockdown as I've seen. Holmes said later that the punch knocke him out but hitting the canvas so hard woke him back up. Actually, there was a right hand right before that knockdown that probably put Larry on queer street. Shavers is the hardest puncher of all time. No "slip" there, bro'. Just straight power.
That second fall of Holmes in the 7th was a knockdown; the ruling of the referee was ridiculous. There were two knockdowns by Shavers! I also thought the referee called it slightly early. I think Shavers could have lasted through the 12th.
after the 7th round it was shavers who was immediately exhausted. up to that point holmes only landed some light jabs so why was shavers the one that was exhausted starting the 8th round.
This is what heavyweight boxing should look like. Too bad they made that rule that you have to have 50% body fat and gass out after a 5 rounds in which 20 punches are thrown.
I think the stoppage by ref was legit shavers could barely keep his arms up was about to collapse from exhaustion but shavers was showing some great heart
Yes... and I watched it live on Network television, that night in the latter 70's. It was highly entertaining. I was rooting for Ernie, but they were both class fighters, of course. I think the "knockdown" of Holmes in the 9th really was a slip, upon re-examination. But it *was close* for Holmes was getting tired, and was hit by a Shavers right.... Perhaps it could have gone either way.
@tightmadnesss The fact that nothing like this can be found on Free TV now goes a ways of explaining how and why boxing has fallen among the pantheon of American sports. Sad, but true.
YEa and Ali didn't fight seriously as he says, and he was about to ko him when he did in the 15th, they showed teh scorecards during teh fight which is why Ali played around alot.
Katis999 Thank you so much for this video.

@vidnut67 What exactly was he doing with :30 left, anyway?

Nobody ever got tireder than Shavers.
@jeryd2003 Shavers' big weakness was his stamina.
RIP, Earnie.
Yes.. sorry. That was the 7th round... Thank you for reminding me.
I guess you are right. Ernie made quite a run at the title, though.
Shavers didn't have to hold a belt...he was a champion in my book.
This was before the greedy corporate cable companies saw the opportunies in Pay Per view.
Holmes was almost like since you knocked me down, I'm gonna give you a real boxing lesson...and he did by beating Shavers senseless.

This was probably Davey Pearl's worst night as a referee.
Sorry, I was talking about the 7th round. My mistake.

You know something? Holmes really did have heart didnt he?

THE BOXER WILL ALWAYS BEAT THE PUNCHER 9 TIMES OUTTA 10
@xDet3rmin4tionx And as long as people pay for it, they'll charge for it.
Ali was way past his prime and fought younger shavers and took his best shots and won, this was prime holmes beating older shavers
