I'm telling you man, your channel is sooooo underrated. Spreading the word.
+Carlito Thanks man!
+Carlito Not for too much longer...
Ill be able to tell my grandkids that one day i had more subs than Mike Nielsen. LOL
+Michael Nielsen Friedman Amp's facebook account just shared this video! (As they should).
And a wicked player in his own right
It always blows my mind when I see a guitarist that I take for granted would be the dropout party dude and they turn out to be someone who can rap for hours about the nuance of tone, and playing styles and stuff. I am nowhere, never practicing, never learned modes and scales, and here this dude is spectacular and probably has thousands of times the hours I practice in. Total respect.
I'm assuming the 1976 amp he's referring to is the grill-grate-front Marshall JMP. That amp sounds GOOD.
the one that sometimes smells like lamb?
Always fun to see Phil X play! Pretty cool how Friedman actually sat there changing values on the fly. Guitar Nerd Disneyland, indeed!
Would love a Friedman... absolute sound I have in my head and love the way it responds to volume changes. So far I have saved about £3.62 though so might take a while...
🤣👍
Mike does the best in depth reviews of the way you actually want to hear and will use a piece of gear.
Phil's rad, studio clean and classy, awesome interview!
More please!
That vibrato trick is amazing.. Such an inspiring player.
Fark he's a great player. Thanks Mike - good fun interview
Life doesn’t have to be complicated. I see a Phil X video, I click play. It’s that simple really.
Phil is as cool as it gets. Congrats for your channel!
I'm in love with this channel. And also with your studio. Cheers!
Phil is like a cross between Sammy Hagar & a labradoodle.
I was thinking sammy and dimebag haha
Sammy looks like a poodle already
Awesome interview video Mike! Well done man, Phil X is a legend. And a lot smarter player than he seems to get credit for (I'm sure that's intended & is actually pure genius). The Friedman amp is just like the ultimate rock sound, super articulate, classic mid grind with balls for days! ...Yeah, it's definitely on the GAS list. :)
He's very smart. Big session guy. Knows his gear. Knows his shit period.
I have been waiting for a video of Phil reviewing his amp since I first saw it!! Thank you!!
I'm always waiting for your videos thanks for posting this one
Found Phil X on the frettedamericana channel last year and became an instant fan.
I've been watching Phil X for awhile and it seems like he has a shitload of fun playing all kinds of gatairs
I like Phil. He doesn't give a f__k. He might plink a note on an internet video but he doesn't care. He just move forward and it rock and roll. Inspiring really
Awesome interview! Phil's a great guy. Been watching a handful of your vids and WOW...you ROCK!!! Keep up the great work.
This amp sounds like a tone monster! I need one
Beautifully creative noodling oh yeah!!!!
Phil you are a MONSTER OF A PLAYER!!!!!!!!
phil is a beast...kudos
I can't understand how Phil doesn't have Gibson banging down his door? He's more popular and influential as a guitarist, than any 'regular' musician. If you play guitar at all, have an internet connection, and like to rock, you know Phil. I've looked and looked and can't find anyone who sells Framus guitars. But you can buy a Gibby anywhere. And he so clearly wants a hotrodded SG:-)
The thing is Framus guitars are disgustingly well made. A Gibson wouldn't necessarily be an upgrade to that, so for him personally I think he's got what he needs with them. As for avaliabilty, that's not really something he should have to care about.
+Todesnuss yeah I wanted to find a devin Townsend framus and can't find and dealers.
HulktastickFTW Where do you live? Personally I would never get something as weirdly specific as devins sig for the kind of price it goes for.
+Todesnuss the uk. It was something I wanted around the release of z2 more then anything. I actually ended up buying a schecter jl-7
HulktastickFTW Thomann has Framus and I'm pretty sure it's easy to get stuff from them in the uk. Don't think they regularly carry Devins sig though, it's way to specialized to have in the regular inventory.
Incredible! Please make a 20 Watt version!
13:30 A boost pedal could actually work as a second master volume if you put it into the effect loop
You can use a distortion pedal. It takes them very well just lower the gain. Etc.
Or an EQ - So long as all of your tone goes through the loop of course. Had amps in the past that only sent 50% into the loom... not great really. I'm on a JCM800 2210 these days, i'm pretty comfortable but a BE-100 does sound mega sexy.
I have a Runt 20 since that's all I need and it is AMAZING!!
That's cool I have just bought a jj jr which apparently is kinda like the runt, I find it very mid heavy, a bit boxy did you experience that with your amp? Cheers 🤟
Oh shit!!! Kaveh Cohens place! Did an interview with him last summer. Awesome guy, awesome studio!!!
Hi Joe! Yep. Kav's room is next door. Identical twin room. :)
Of course! figured this was the room to the left after I commented. Ventured in for a sneaky peek! Fantastic place! Great review. Phil sure is a crazy awesome dude! Thanks for the vid!
the magic beep word is MARSHALL, by the way, his amp is a 1976 jmp 100 watt I believe or its a 50 watt I'm not sure you'll have to ask Phil to find out
LOL.... another great tone lesson from Phil XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
I so can't wait for the BE pedal..., trusting you get it first
You should have a Million Subscribers. Great stuff all the time.
Thanks Trevorr! VERY nice of you to say!
wonderful player he is!
Great one channel amp I'm saving for a small box or a D Shirley Friedman is a genius
Love this!
hes right when the drummer notices shit you got something. totally true.
Happened to me once 😂
@@dylanlbdb me too just last week. our drummer noticed how much better my 77 JMP 50w Marshall sounded than my Runt 50. I said the same thing 'if the drummer notices then you know you've got something'.
I had to get a ceriatone bass 50 watt, great amp with good build and components, takes pedals well.
'...and this is just some random dude we picked up off the street to play with Phil's stuff'. That would have been so funny.
If your amp doesn't have a boost function, or you don't like it, put a clean boost pedal (like an Xotic) in the FX loop.
Fred Garvin a Boss GE-7 in the loop will change your life for leads and shaping tone
Phil X was in your studio? WOW!
Phil is the MAN!!
Why is he bleeped? I am still looking for
his Dirty Sanchez signature pickup! lol
Yeah. Phil is great player and dude! We bleeped him because it's a Friedman video and he was talking about Marshall. Honestly, we just thought it would be kinda funny. Everyone who knows Phil, knows that he has a killer old Marshall head.
This is great thanks for the upload!! Phil is the man. Hey does anyone know if Doug Rappoport will come out with a signature amp? I feel like he should have a signature Friedman. Thanks
i dont think he wants one
Yeah he is probably happy with the stock stuff it's so amazing DS40 for me hopefully soon
BE - 💯 is the best I ever head him sound, like that amp was made for him.
Wish I could afford a Friedman amp. Again, this one sounds sweet. Mike your channel should have a million subs.
Used?
kind of a jimmy page meets brian may type vibe. love this guy
What strings brand and gauges does he use??
Awesome channel Mike I'm a new sub I'll send along anyone I can this channel ROCKS
First time to your channel...great interview! Subscribed
Phil X is disturbed ...... love
always wanted to play a German made Framus. I have played a Buxom Betty Friedman though and holy hell I can see why Phil loves those amps. Bill Kelliher too.
Such a killer player and seems like a really cool guy too. Hope someday he from a new hard rock group and puts out sime new/old school metal
Phil X is just in another level
Friedman makes some of the best amps in the planet if you ask me
Great job, mike!!!!!!
Phil played bball I love it
At 2:27 Phil reminded me of Bill Hader's Stefon...
Well that was as awesome as awesome gets.
Phil seems less burnt out and his concentration and playing are improved.
4:25, Michaels facial expression was interesting when Phil talked about bringing in the preamp as a kind of “sauce”... seemed like he didn’t agree with that statement. Curious what he was thinking there.
Censored Marshall
OMG, perfect brown sound at 15:01.
Love this channel !!!!
I sooo want a Friedman.
these cuts senes dude. love it
sooper gooood session!
I love Phil x \m/
I'm so jealous of Phil's hair...
Any lessons on how to ,play the first section he plays
PHIL X!!!!!!!!!! God I freaking love this guy. I also love Friedman amps. They sound amazing. I can't afford one, but that's OK. For you folks with big bucks, they're worth the money.
phil you have to come back to kitchener with the drills ,big fan base here .
Why can we know what amp he’s talking about?
The longer you play the less stuff you want, less to brake, less to step on, less carry, and more control with a value knob.
Still think his best tone was that kesha amp? Kasha?
It’s weird. Love where Phil’s heads at on what he wants out of an amp, pedals etc bit when I got to try a Phil X model I did not like it all. Felt it didn’t deliver a lot of what he talks about here. I feel Friedman for most of his amps is the Marshall that has been smoothed and refined but has lost the wildness. Many folks love it but I prefer the original, angrier messy sounding amps. Some of the older modded Marshall clips from before the BE100 are pretty terrific though.
So what's happened to the Evil Robot?
Dead in the water
Wouldn't mind one of his Framus sig models... the price however O_o
They're developing a chinese made one, but it doesn't come with the Arcane pickups.
Killer head!!!!! I likey!!!!
I want to know what Phil's normal settings are???? Anyone?
Also any tab for what he plays as its freakin awesome
All of the songs are off The Drills new record. I do t know the release date yet, but It'll be out soon.
Kickass!
I remember Dee Cernile teaching me that behind the nut whammy bar trick
what pick up in that framus?
More pls👍😂
Que marca es la guitarra?
you must tell us all your secrets that's why I'm watching broski
Sounds like a sharpened evh guitar sound
Achievement Unlocked!!!!!! OMG so HILARIOUS
Wait! - that's the guy that's painting the garage!
So no more evil robot? That was the go to sig amp that he was talking like this about what a year or two ago
These 2 amps don't really crossover each other's range. I don't see why they can't co-exist. However, I highly recommend buying both and running them together! Oh yeah!!!!!! Do that!!!!!
+Michael Nielsen wasn't trying to start drama just wondering. I think Phil is amazing and love to hear about the gear he is using and why. I just questioned is this going to be replaced down the road with another amp like the evil robot? There is another guy that has bounced around the endorsement and or signature deal often and I hate to think that's what is happening here
+C. Smith no drama. I totally get what you're saying. Rock on! & thanks for watching!
cool! :)
what brand are those cool sg's? seems like they don t neck dive ..ever.. eeeeva :)
+je jee Framus. They have the biggest neck I've ever felt. Eeeeevvaaaaaaaa!!!!! ;)
+Michael Nielsen I'm assuming u mean large neck not like a extra long neck? Reason I ask is I have a RnR relic. Best playing neck ever, so slinky but it sticks out so far I can hardly reach towards the nut.
+Michael Nielsen I think it's the way the stick it in the end of the body instead of in thru the body. Phil's neck doesn't look real long. I'm not sure because he's standing. I hope I'm making sense.
What kind of guitar is he playing, it's gorgeous
framus px signature
Framus XG
Yeah, those Friedman amps man...
recording to 2 different power amps getting the 2 different characteristics in parallel?
+Archie Macfarlane Sorry, I'm not sure I understand the question. Everything was recorded through that head on the spot. All characteristic changes are switched internally in the amp.
oh nah i just had an idea...combine a squishy poweramp with a cutting chunky one for example
kind of like parallel compression
+Archie Macfarlane , Even better is to combine this amp with a Mini Dirty Shirley. Punchy + Juicy!
or do the trainhack use a trainwreck expresss to bleed feedback into another amp you record
Hi anyone now what song and what album it's off at the end
+satchyvaihalen it's off of Phil's upcoming album with his band, The Drills.
definitely sounds like a nod to giuseppe.
I am a drummer that also plays guitar, so some of us like good guitar tone, lol!
I like ur channel
The next thing you know he'll be announcing his endorsement deal with Marshall.
I wouldn't be surprised. It's hard to say NO to Gibson, Fender or Marshall.
what guitar is this?
Why censor Marshall?
+Nick paellas Just for the fun of it. :) Anyone who's a Phil X fan knows he has a killer Marshall head and a killer old Magnatone, and a killer Friedman.
Dude, that SG....wtf, sexy as hell. Its a SG right?
+Bernardo Salles Framus XG.
+Bernardo Salles its a Framus , he use to play an ESP
+rjmcdade thought phil had a Yamaha endorsement?....ohwell things move fast these days! ⚡️🤔
+Martin Kilner Phil talked about his guitar switch in a different interview (can't remember where I saw it). It sounded like Yamaha could move as fast as he wanted with changes or updates to his model. And he wanted to put out a lower priced model, which Y was resistant to doing. And Framus makes great geeeeetars too.
+rjmcdade Yamaha.
