Holland refers to what was once the single province of, you guessed it, Holland. Now it's divided into the provinces or North- And South-Holland. It's like suggesting we call Germany North Rhine-Westphalia because it's the wealthiest and most populous state.
In real life everybody uses both words. I tend to say NL. When once I used Holland (since some people from abroad don't know the word NL) I was corrected by an American. It's always the conversation. And started by some Dutch people not liking the word Holland. And being Dutch I can sort of relate because that word has sort of a nationalistic connotation since it's mainly used by people supporting the soccer team screaming out loud Holland! But I'm over it. It's Holland or the Netherlands. The words indeed are interchangeable. 💚 (the story about the 2 provences is true but not really, since Holland really also is used as a name for the whole country)
@@jarasimonson4040 Just because everyone is doing it wrong doesn't mean the words are actually interchangeable.
Het grappige is dat ik en Nederlands ben en in Groningen woon (Translation: The funny part is that i am Netherlands and live in Groningen)

Ik ben Nederlands en kom uit Groningen🤣🤣 (i am from the Netherlands, groningen)
Hi, you said Holland and The Netherlands are the same.. but that is not quite correct. The Netherlands is the name of our country, but Holland is the name of two (out of twelve) provinces in The Netherlands, North Holland (where Amsterdam is situated) and South Holland. Calling The Netherlands Holland, it’s the same when calling The United States, Dakota!.. just a reminder for your next visit.
Thank you for visiting Groningen, I am a 13th genaration Groninger and still very proud to call it my home.
Check out this cool vid. that will explain it all:

You need like 10 years of living here to speak the language, and even then, the kids that have been born in the meantime, speak it better than you.
