  • A simple part to a tedious job of leveling a floor in an older house using a scribe to trace the contour of the uneven floor.
1: start by finding the high point on the uneven floor
    - the high point is the reference point that the rest of the floor rib heights will be brought up to
2: use this method (shown in the video) to make the first rib and secure it - glue and screw
3: find the offset with a level tangent to the rib(s) - offset is mentioned in video
4: proceed to do each rib the same way spacing the ribs no more than 16in (mine are spaced 12in)
5: finally, I attached 5/8 tung and groove plywood with glue and screws ( best practice )

Watched tons of ‘subfloor leveling videos’ often 15-20min long.
This 1:34 video has all I needed for the most effective sleeper scribing method. I knew there was a better way.
    Thanks.

When did you get that tool

How are you cutting these at the table saw if you need to follow the contoured cut line? Or are you getting them close to the line and then sanding/planing to your line?

What's the average cost for a project like this?

How do you secure the cut 2x4 without splitting them once you set screws in?

Since I'm leveling an existing floor, I used screws (and glue) just long enough to secure the 2x4 to the existing plywood floor. Older homes often have one inch pine boards as floor boards. I would use the local building code as a guide and suggest approximately every 16 inches. Cheers

Great video! I'm going to use this method to level the floor in the loft prior to converting it. What tool do you use to hold the marker? Have you made it yourself or did you buy it? Thanks!

I'm glad this helps. I used an old backstop from a cutoff saw but anything that's a rod mounted in a foot that can slide would be great. I can't find it right now - I like your idea of making one. Thanks

Ok so once you cut the board what happens? What did you do with it?

Generally screw it down with some glue. The main idea is to create ribs or sleepers or a "level" support to attach the plywood to.

This was great! But, how did you find the offset?

    • @WayneSmithT41
      @WayneSmithT41  5 лет назад +4

Generally, the offset is the drop in the floor from the high point. I started at the high point and - using a level - found where and how much the floor dropped (out of level). In my case the reference height was the bottom step of the staircase.

      Wayne Smith ah. Thanks!
We found a different video before yours where they were setting the level based on the adjoining room and using screws to create kind of a template, then setting a 2x4 on top of the screws and scribing to account for the floor wobble. But they they would have to do a second cut on top for the height.
We tried to come up with a way to scribe for the wobble and the height at the same time, but couldn’t.
Your video was closer, but we couldn’t figure out the offset concept from a floor in one room, to the floor in the next.

Thanks for asking this question, crucial info missed out from the video, but thankfully answered!

Maybe you should find out why your floor is so out of level before you do this.
