- Everyone recognizes the large purple dinosaur, but not many people know the man inside the costume. David Joyner played Barney for 10 years on TV and in live performances, and dancing around in that huge costume was not very easy. We spoke with Joyner about what it was like being one of the most famous children's characters of all time, and what he is up to now.

I don't really understand the hate that people had towards Barney the character. Not sure if people just won't admit that they liked him, but I literally loved and still love Barney. It holds a special place in my heart. I always looked forward to watching VHS and DVDs of Barney.
barney was my childhood, it's such a sweet show, i miss shows like these, when i was a child it was really conforting to watch lol
1. Barney can't really be enjoyed outside its target demographic, like Sesame Street.
2. Kids who are slightly outside the show's demographic have a fear of being seen as immature so they hate the show. Adults just hate it because it's kinda sickenly sweet (Does Barney have any negative emotions? Even Elmo lost his temper now and again).
3. How do you FIGURATIVELY love something?
That's what I call anti-barney humour. Of course, it has played a role in my childhood and have enjoyed some episodes, although it is nice to have very dark humour every now and then ahah.

I was a Barney fan and I didn’t realize how much of a impact it had on my childhood. My best memories were watching it with my dad and going to the park right after dressed up like a princess. I think I still have my Barney bed sheets folded somewhere under layers of other old bed sheets in my moms closet. Damn, that says a lot. Cause after we moved, my childhood was not the same. It took a few years to feel like a happy kid again. Thanks Barney, you kept me safe from the chaos of reality before I became aware of what was happening around me.

...As a man who nearly sweltered to death inside a foam rubber deathtrap shaped into a Minion-Tm- on the opening day of a dollar store, I respect this guy for putting up with Barney for that length of time. The fact that he was able to hop around like that is also amazing, considering the weight of the suit.
If you're trying to set me off, forget it. I said not one word about Mr. Joyner's race.
In fact, you're the one who brought that up. (I'll let that set in while I move on to trying to spell things out for you).
I clearly said that, -well heck, if you'd have read the post instead of shooting off your mouth, you'd have known what I said.
The name of the costume is BARNEY!
Mr. Joyner was the one having to put up with the character. One that to a lot of children was for the most part a wonderful creation, but in reality was a hot, sweltering pile of foam rubber.
I only wore such a costume once and nearly suffocated, as I clearly stated. Mr. Joyner put up with wearing that purple death trap all those years.
That is why I said that I respected him. Get that through your chrome, you insolent twit.
Mr. Joyner was the guy in, (I respect THIS GUY for putting up with BARNEY for that length of time),- in case you were careless enough to miss that.
And as for the bit about hopping about, Think on it: The man himself said that the suit was a lump of lead.
And being able to hop around in said lump is an amazing feat.
Not one that many people would ATTEMPT to deal with, let alone have the patience or the nerve to pull off constantly for several hours a day for so many years.
And as far as the "white male" bit you spouted off, two things:
#1.This man said not one word during this video about anybody of any race making things hard for him, 'cept for that green' n' purple headache that just about cooked him on a daily basis.
#2. You're white yourself. So if it's, "White men", who're giving him trouble, then you must be doing something to him that I don't know about .
Speaking for myself, I ain't doing crap, save for paying respect to a man with more gumption than me. By MAN, I of course mean Mr. Joyner.
And to boot, if being made into a millionaire and getting booked for all of those great acting jobs is evidence of someone, "Making things hard for him", -then what world are you living in?
In fact, if that's evidence of being mistreated, then I wish that someone would mistreat ME that way.

I grew up watching Barney the dinosaur! Barney is so underrated. He was popular when I was little, but now... I honestly rather have a four year old watch Barney than Paw patrol. Barney danced, sang songs and made arts and crafts with kids. It also got kids into exploring the world around them.

Kinda sad to see how an iconic show from my childhood has decayed over time. Everyone back at elementary school thought Barney was stupid but I personally liked the show and thought it spread a positive message. I wish kids grew up watching it today instead of having to worry if they're bisexual, gay, or whatever else you want to throw out there. I miss back when you could just go out in the world and talk to people without feeling so much tension from politics and society. Kind of a somber mood to reminisce on those days now. Hopefully they will return in the years to come.

I seem to be the odd guy out who wasn't a fan of Barney growing up. I'm not really sure why that was the case, but nonetheless, I have a newfound respect for the character because of this video and hearing about the man who played him. I think it's so cool that he so fondly remembers his time playing the character.
