The writing on the tree is from Plato's Symposium and roughly translates to Ever since human nature was split into two, each one trying to catch the other - their other half.
I just wanna add that it's referancing the acient myth that at first humans were perfect and had 4 legs 4 arms and 2 heads and than Zeus (im not shure if it was zeus or another god) got mad for some reason and split humans in half. Now humans forever seach for their other half :)
Is it referring to the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the garden of Eden, by saying, "Human nature being spit in two." (Good/Evil?) That's a question that has been sailing around in my head a lot lately. (Why are humans so fixed on being "good", to the point where they demonize others, selfishly considering them Bad or Evil?) What truly make a person Ether "Good/ Bad or Evil?"
@@whitmancook2545nah it’s from plato’s symposium, referring to a greek myth about humans having been split in two by zeus, forcing them to search for their other half
On the Tree of Life is inscribed, “After the division the two parts of man, each desiring his other half.” The phrase is taken from Plato’s groundbreaking philosophical text Symposium, and specifically from a passage delivered by Plato’s rendering of the playwright Aristophanes. The playwright recounts an origin story of mankind, in which humans were originally two bodies stuck together-some man and man, some woman and woman, and some man and woman. When the bodies were separated by angry Zeus, each one longed for their other half-which explains why we feel love and desire for different types of bodies. - From Time Magazine
"I'm trying to figure out what the difference is" It's black people doing it. Just like here it's a gay person doing it. I know you probably already get it, but from certain sources; none of that criticism is ever legitimate.
@@daytonapeach A lot of things sound dumb if you lack the context to understand it. They're talking about racist double standards in the music industry. Many metal bands have explicitly satanic imagery and never get questioned. There technically actually was a political movement against metal but that was a long time ago and metal is slowly being normalized as mainstream. In contrast, people criticize rap all the time for sexism and gloryfing drug use as if white people don't do that literally all the time. And it's seen as counter-culture. Often times all music made by black people vaguely resembling rap/hip-hop is shoved under an "urban" label in music awards which is just a polite way of saying "black people music". It doesn't get acknowledged the same way even though millions of non-black people are huge rap fans. Just a giant double standard

Definitely one of the better react videos out there as you picked out the message perfectly. About the only thing I can add is the fact that Montero is his given name. So "this is Montero" means just that, this is him unapologetically.
Mad respect to you for recognizing what Lil Nas X is about. He’s a gay man who no longer wants to be bound by the hip hop prejudices. Thank you for this.
He was trying to portray that he isn’t bothered with the idea of going to hell if it means he get to accept himself and his sexuality. Lil Nas X is Gay. He embraced the negative label and turned it so that they can’t be used against him anymore. Why would he force himself to an organization that doesn’t want him?
@Monica Payne i hope u know the og verse abt a man & a man in the bible was really abt a man & a child, meaning the verse was saying pedophilia is bad. the various translations of the bible changed the verse along with many others

I admit that with Old Town Road I expected him to be a 1 hit wonder but glad to be proved wrong. He is an important voice for young LGBTQ people of color. Can't wait to see what he does next.
If no one has answered yet, the quote on the tree translates from Greek to "So in the beginning when they were cut in two. They yearned for each other’s half." In the last section there's Latin on the floor in Satan's chamber that says "Damnant quod non intelligunt" which translates to "They condemn what they do not understand." Also perks to you, you seem to be one of a few people that actually reacts to his lyrics AND symbols. This is the content I've been looking for. Good on you!
Also the text is ancient greek! It's a nod to Plato's Symposium, stating "after the division the two parts of man, each desiring his other half." Plato believed that same-sex love was blessed by the Gods (as did many Greek citizens) and is referencing the mythology of soul mates, where originally humans had 4 legs and 4 arms. Zeus feared our power in this fearsome form and split us in half with lightning, condemning us to a lifetime of searching for our other half. This text has been used to show that same sex relationships have historically been accepted and even actively promoted in other cultures. Basically, gay people have been doing their thing since the very conception of our species and the world, notably, hasn't been engulfed in flames or plunged into eternal darkness.
He took the common line of religious people that "gay people are going to hell" and accepted it (made it hotter even) and it's confusing why they're still mad. Like, yall made this narrative. It just proves that they are pissed that gay people aren't bothered by their bs anymore.

Seeing your reaction to this just makes me so damn hopeful. It's one thing to have my friends who I know I'm safe with, where i can talk to them about this song and know we agree "Well they told him he was going to hell (they told us all we were going to hell) and now they mad that we went?" But to see someone approach this logically, even if you weren't familiar with the full situation or his other work or personal life, just you came at this so reasonable. Thank you man. Your immediate affirmations on the need for representation of under-represented groups is almost enough to make me cry. I wish there were more people like you.
1:16 Actually, Montero is Lil Nas X's real name! In the beginning when he says "Welcome to Montero" he's basically saying "Welcome to my mind" or "Welcome to my world"
About metalheads disliking hiphop (and vice versa most of the time tbh), my guess would be that it's basically like having two obnoxious little brothers both fighting for attention. Both genres emerged from places of hardship where being counter culture was the way of breaking through the noise, but they both did it in their own way. So yeah, I'd say that it comes down to the two communities being loyal to their own culture and not being able to zoom out enough to see how much alike they really are. Personally, I'm gay and I love both genres for the simple fact that they embrace their misfit status. Sadly my whiteness prevents from moving to the hiphop beats without looking like a fool though, so I'm sticking to headbanging :D Thanks for an awesome reaction video, and for your openness!

As a fan of both hardcore metal and hip hop, most metalheads love hip hop as well. There are some that only like certain subgenres of hip hop that contain metal influences (think $uicideboy$, Ghostemane, etc). I’ve heard a lot of metal fans praise Lil Nas X for what he is doing with this video and with the “Satan Shoes” thing, saying it’s turning to the Church’s antagonistic nature back on itself. Best reaction I've seen so far. You actually pay attention and think about how each part fits together compared to other channels. Lil Nas X basically said, "I'm going to hell? Fine, I'll be the king of it." And religious people are still mad lol Ironic that they seem to have more hatred in their hearts than people who are just trying to be themselves and truly happy.
Brother, I've seen a lot of reaction videos because I was interested in public's opinion. And after watching yours I came to the conclusion that you're either did an extensive research before recording this..
Or you're the most attentive, thoughtful and considerate person on RUclips. Not only you catched all the concepts of the video and the general intention behind it, but you even catched the butt plug easter egg lmaoo. And it seems you didn't even know he was gay before watching this
All I'm saying is I'm a fan now 😍

His actual name is montero... This song is about his struggle being gay
I love metal, and I love this. But I'm pretty eclectic and I adore his message in the video. Which is also visually stunning. I've been watching heads explode for days now, and I am just so happy he is out there saying this is who he is and he accepts it and doesn't care what anyone says. He is unapologetic about who he is, and I respect the Hell out of him for it.
Thanks for the translation.
@@whitmancook2545 That’s very interesting and true. We want to be good, but what is good? And good for who?
I loved how you didn’t assume he was gay until the “while I’m riding” line. It made me really happy :)
Way better understanding then in the Bible XD
Another great explanation is in Origin of Love from Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
@@serpentinewolf7085 Yes us Greeks fucked up imo we should kept with the crazy god stories

"I'm trying to figure out what the difference is" It's black people doing it. Just like here it's a gay person doing it. I know you probably already get it, but from certain sources; none of that criticism is ever legitimate.
You are correct - i give eye rolls to ppl who like metal but hate hip hop 😒
Low IQ statement
@@elisewilliams1575 YES!! I fully agree! I listen to death metal and not so much hip hop but not cuz of violance, i just like screaming. But i've noticed the hypocrisy with people who criticise rap/hip hop for talking about drugs and violance but than turn around and say they love nirvana or guns n roses. If it's the violance/ drug talk that is the reason why u dont listen to rap/ hiphop but i hear you talking about how you love metal/ grunge/ punk, even certan rock bands ill just stay 4 meaters away from you 👀

He was trying to portray that he isn’t bothered with the idea of going to hell if it means he get to accept himself and his sexuality. Lil Nas X is Gay. Religious organizations exclude LGBT+ and condemning them as the devil worshipers. There’s no place for LGBT+ in religion. He embraced the negative label and turned it so that they can’t be used against him anymore. Why would he force himself to an organization that doesn’t want him?
@Monica Payne 🦁 Why does God have a problem with homosexuals?

I’ve seen dozens of reactions in the past few days and this is the ONLY one from a straight person that didn’t frustrate me while watching it lol awesome reaction 👏

Actually, Montero is Lil Nas X's real name!

The video is radical acceptance of one’s sexuality, regardless of whatever fate they may meet because of it.
