    I've worked in ophthalmology (both clinical and research) for several years and I usually hate to watch anything about ophthalmology because either I feel like I'm constantly picking out informational errors or it's too similar to what occurs in clinic so it makes me feel like I'm working. This video is comprehensive and accurate on the topic, but still light enough to be interesting. You have somehow broken the spell with this video Dr. Gill. Bravo and thank you!

    Lol With this I found my left eye has a huge blind spot!! I had a problem with my vision randomly being unable to see clearly at times. I had my eyes checked and asked alot of eye doctors. They all said other then needing my glasses, my eyes where fine. Gave up on it. But this video help me understand it was my blindspot! With this knowledge, i was able to recreat the events where i lost the means to clearly read and see. It was when playing or watching or typing on tv/phone/pc. No wonder i kept having typos in my texts. I was holding the phone in my left eye's blindspot. Thank you for this. At last a life long problem solved. 🤗👍 Now I understand my eye's range of view.

    Fascinating! I tried that test using my phone, it's surprising how big that blind spot is. Not being in any way qualified with regards to medicine, it's great that you managed to demonstrate this skill so clearly that it didn't take more than one try to make it work.
    Excellent work on the video - even for those of us not watching as medical students, it's really interesting to look at the diagrams and hear the explanations. Thanks for producing this!

    • @Ant-le7hl
      @Ant-le7hl 4 года назад +2

      On a side note, something I noticed just now:
      When you show the Ishihara Charts, I think the labelling on the left might be unintentionally misleading. With the control plate, it says on the left that "this shows 12", which is correct, and the next test plate that says 6 also says "this shows 6", so I think a viewer would assume that you are displaying the correct answer on the left in the video.
      However, the next two have written on the left what an R/G colourblind person would see (i.e. what you're seeing), but are presented in the same way as the correct answers before - I initially thought I was reading the plates wrong myself and went to check the linked document. Then, in the last one, it says on the left that you see nothing but that the plate "shows" 7, i.e. reinforcing the concept that the "shows X" on the left are displaying the correct answers.

      @justsomeguy7044 4 года назад +5

      That's interesting. It's like the whole Yanny/Laurel thing, but for the eyes instead.

    •  4 года назад +4

      At 2:55 you can see a merge between the 8/3. The base of the number (3) pulls towards violet, while the "added" part to make an 8 from a 3 is more orange-ish. Given this plate at an examination I would say I see both numbers.
      As for 3:03, I see a 3. The upper half is a different shade of green than the bottom half. Similarly as with 3/8, 3 and 5 have s common part (the bottom half). I might have some sort of color vision defect (my father is red/green colorblind) because I can't for the life of me find any part of the upper half of the 5.

    3:02 That shows a 3, actually. I went ahead and googled this Ishihara Chart and had a look at all 38. Also did the test available online just to be sure. The 3 and 5 ones seem to have the same colors, but I can clearly distinguish between the two. To my eyes, the 5 is very clearly a 5 and 3, very clearly a 3. I decided to make this comment cuz seeing the 3 and then "shows 5" at the side made me quite confused. Either I went 27 years without knowing I'm colorblind and that part of the video is wrong, and I'm sure I'm not colorblind. Just thought I'd point that out cuz it's kinda concerning to be confused about this on a medical video whereas I never had problems with seeing certain colors in all my life.

    That was wild I even put the tip of my finger in front of where I was supposed to see the big dot and it vanished. I could even feel crackings like when you have cramps, around the blind spot as you move ur finger. So I guess that's how we perceive light.

    this was fun!!! I found my blind spot right away, and if you do it too many times in a row, you will begin to get a slight head ache! I'm elderly, so, I am due for cataract surgery in about a year. The fun thing is I was told I could pick the color I wanted. I'm leaning toward two different colors, and having fun blaming the surgeon. I'm so NOT staying with brown and ready to match my husband's handsome blue eyes. BUT, this is going to sound like a dumb question, how do you test for say the other eye? Do you just close the left eye? Or does it have to be a dot and cross and I need to hold the iPad upside down?
