FIRST RIDE: 2021 Husky FX350 Ride Impressions

  • I have a little over 3 hours ride time on my new 2021 Husqvarna FX350 so far. Not a lot of big changes this year but the updates to the suspension are noticeable. Usually the WP suspension will take a good 5~8 hours to really break in but the changes to the AER fork and rear shock/linkage result in a more friction free feel (especially at the top of the stroke) that is noticeable right off the showroom floor. This helps give the bike a more plush and planted overall feel. The AER fork is very tunable with pressure and clicker adjustments. I typically go up 2~4 psi in air pressure and a few clicks stiffer in the AER forks when I go ride a motocross track. If I am riding tight trails in the woods I go 2~4 psi lower air pressure in the fork along with Comfort clicker settings. Overall the FX350 suspension is very tunable for different riding conditions and the fork and shock updates for 2021 are noticeable and give the bike an overall more compliant and planted feel. The new seat cover on the FX is similar to the material used on the TE/FE models with a less aggressive holding surface that is more comfortable. The rest of the bike is the same as previous FX350's. The engine is quick revving, powerful, and loves to rev. This engine makes power over a broad range of RPM and works surprisingly well even at low RPM though a Rekluse auto clutch and radiator fan are good options for tight and gnarly single track. This particular bike seemed to rev a little quicker than my previous FX350's though I am not aware of any engine or mapping changes for the 2021 model year. I did notice the stock muffler on the '21 FX350 now has a rounded screen vs the pointy perforated metal cone inside. Maybe the screen flows a little better. The FX350 comes with Magura brakes and calipers which have less initial bite compared to Brembo's brakes but offer a little more modulation at the lever. The clutch pull effort is light at the Magura clutch lever. The Dunlop AT81 tires have a compliant carcass and work over a broad range of conditions though I still prefer a Dunlop MX3S front tire. The 6-speed transmission offers a nice range of gears and since 2020 the FX350 has come with a 51T rear sprocket.
    If you have a well sorted and set up 2019 or 2020 FX350 there is little motivation to upgrade to the 21 FX350. If you are into tight and gnarly single track riding the FE350 is perhaps the better choice. If you like to do a variety of off road riding including GP's, light moto, or trails the FX350 is a great do-it-all off road bike. In my book 350's are perhaps the best overall combination of power/weight/handling in a 4-stroke dirt bike.

    I would consider these bikes as world peace achieved in the dirtbike world. All the nimble, light, responsive nature of a 250 without the 450s aggressive power attributes that can often be too much in single track or technical trails. Perfect split down the middle in my opinion.

    These bikes are incredible. Been riding the Huskies for a few years (since 2016), and the KTMs for years before that (1997/98, 2000, 2003-onward), and the '21 350 is one of the best. Had a 19, and still have a 20, and riding the 20/21 back to back shows the changes. Map 2 received an upgrade (at least on the FC model), and the suspension update feels like a significant improvement in handling (not that the previous height was bad at all!). Great video

      Thanks! You look to be enjoying your '21 FC350 at Oak Hills MX! I am curious about your thoughts on the 10mm lower suspension on the '21 FC350 vs your '20 FC350. Do you notice much difference in handling - perhaps in the corners?

      @@mxengineer1 thank you! And absolutely - It feels more planted, and lets me get a better lean angle. I'm curious how it will fair in the woods (I race Enduros/Hare Scrambles quite a bit), but already love it for moto. For a non-chassis changing year, they made big strides with a minor update. Curious how the shootouts go against the KTMs, since they kept the height over the previous year models.

    Ok I have the FX350, which is a great bike, fuelled with a lot of add ons, she weighs 111 KGs. I am looking at a YZ250FX, I am a short guy, 5ft 6inches, will I regret the Yam?

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  3 года назад

      Your FX350 starts out much lighter than the YZ250FX (probably about 10 lbs). The YZ250FX has more compact ergo's in terms of seat/footpeg/handlebar relationship but does feel wider up front. The FX350 seat height should feel a little lower compared to the YZ250FX. I recently did some riding with Becca Sheets (2020 GNCC WXC Champion). I am not sure how tall Becca is but my guess is no more than 5ft 6inches tall and she has no issues with the stock seat height and runs stock height suspension. Maybe you can get a test ride on a YZ250FX and get a better feel for the ergo's and if they work for you.

    Been looking at mid-bore 4 strokes for my next bike to complement my TM Racing EN300ES 2t, and I'm stuck between the TM Racing EN300Fi - Twin Pipe, Beta 350 or 390 Race Editions, Gas Gas EX350, or the video's top star: the Husqvarna FX350!!!
    I'm partial to the TM Racing & Husqvarna due to the fact I owned a 2020 Husqvarna TE150i, as well as own a TM Racing currently (as stated above) and love(d) every second on these machines. Since I have not rode any of them, it is very hard to determine which one to buy - that's where the MX Engineer comes in! haha The Beta 390 seems awesome - especially since it has a rather long stroke! No one makes that size, and I could easily get a port and polish completed, purchase a high-compression racing piston, install the complete FMF exhaust (I don't know of anyone else who makes one for them), as well as get some cams made with a more aggressive profile...I would believe it would be a monster then!?? You seen Steve Holcombe dominate the world Enduro GPs with his??? Him and the bike are MONSTERS!!!
    But then I remember how much of an animal the Husqvarna & Gas Gas can be, and how many offroad races KTM has dominated with the 350 platform!! Plus it has a plethora of aftermarket goodies developed for the platform, as well as the top tier craftsmanship and ergonomic architecture goes well beyond most other platforms. The TM is awesome, but the 300 twin is currently the MOST expensive bike because it has Moto GP engine technology, giving it traction control characteristics like no other on the market - is the extra price worth it over bikes that are $1k+ cheaper with 50-90cc's MORE engine capacity??? Thats the true question? lol
    Then I also start to think about just moving up to big bores and just get a YZ450FX or CRF450RX since they are cheaper, and will probably outlast the others due to bigger engine and these two manufacturers legendary quality control.
    What do you make of all this chicken scratch? You obviously are partial to the FX350, and rightfully so since there are so many pro moto examples of the platform destroying competition with its agility and power - Russell straight up dominated GNCC with the Ktm 350 XC-F. My favorite suspension hands down is KYB so thats why I lean more to Beta at first...but a 2022 or 2023 Husqvarna FX350 with KYB A Kit suspension would ride oh so sweet and look better than anything - especially getting some gold rims with blue hubs to bring on a neo-retro look to keep the Husqvarna legend and name alive!🤘 Thanks for content. I appreciate your detailed explanation and all your cool bikes!
      I have ridden most of the bikes you discuss except those cool TM models. My quick comments about each:
      1. The 21 CRF450RX is a beast! Tons of power with a muffin top fuel tank that ruins the ergos (get the RedMoto fuel tank to correct the ergos).
      2. YZ450FX is a tunable beast! Great KYB suspension and decent off road ratios in the transmission. This is a big bike that always feels like a big bike (and a bit heavy too).
      3. Beta 350/390/430 4-strokes have the best low rpm rideabililty...almost 300 2-stroke level of stall free low engine rpm running. The engines have some extra crank inertia that makes the power very smooth and also adds to the weight feel in motion. The Race Edition models have the KYB fork which is tuned well (better for '21 model year). The Italians know how to style their bikes too. Bright red Beta's are easy to spot.
      4. The KTM/Husky 350 platform has won MXGP championships, Eudurocross Championships, Sprint Enduro Championships, National Enduro races, and 8-times GNCC Championship winning bike. There is no current platform/model dirt bike that has won championships and races over such a broad range of disciplines. The KTM/Husky 350 is my current favorite combination of power/weight/handling in a 4-stroke off road bike. My '21 KTM 350XCF Kailub Russell Edition is my favorite 4-stroke to date especially after adding the myKTM connectivity unit (turn up the throttle response/reduce engine braking), full Akrapovic exhaust (more low to mid power and less noise), and full WP Pro Components suspension. From Vet moto to woods riding the 350FX/XCF does it all so well.
      So many great bikes out there to choose from. Good to see you are expanding your collection. You will enjoy any of the models you mentioned. Let me know what you end up with:)

      Thanks for the sub! Big thing on KTM/Husky 350's (and any 4-stroke) is change engine oil often and keep air cleaner fresh. AER forks (air forks) are quite adjustable so play with air pressure and clickers - both of which can change for different riding conditions (track or woods). Rear shock is very good stock. Enjoy your new bike!

    How does this compare to the Sherco 300 SEF I think you rode before. It had pink number plates...

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  4 года назад

      The FX350 feels lighter and more powerful - a more aggressive overall package in terms of power and handling. The Sherco engine runs smoother at low rpms (lugging over obstacles) and revs more slowly and the EFI maps are noticeably different (smooth or aggressive...rain vs sun on the switch). The Sherco ergonomics are quite different with a taller "sit on top of the bike fee"l and the bars are closer to the rider. The FX350 sits lower and has a little more open feel (I am 6' 2" tall).

    You're saying all the right words, but at the same time, you sound very underwhelmed :D Flame out test would have been good! You had be kinda interested in the 23's but everyone is saying the chassis' are really stiff on the 4T.

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  2 года назад

      The '22.5 250 Factory Edition and 450 Factory Edition for sure have a different feel - give up some of that quick/light/busy front end feel for a more weight/planted feel. The new chassis is beefier and heavier. The new bike does not obsolete the old bike - just a different feel that some riders may prefer. Don't expect to feel spin a few laps on the new bike and feel it is a must have over the current chassis - it takes a few rides to appreciate the new handling character. The engines on the new bikes - they finally have some quick turn over (both the 250/450) and that bodes well for the 23 350SXF/XCF (which seems to have been the word from the press ride at Red Bud on the 23 350SXF). For now the little 250FE beat my gold standard KR350 on a short woods loop..DOH!! ruclips.net/video/ZI8xEtD-PNs/видео.html

      I just mean the rigidity. First few tests of the 23's sounded good, but now there seems to be an increasing consensus that they are quite a bit stiffer than the old one's which isn't what I was looking for. (Maybe some changes between your FE's and the production frames). Will wait and see though. Big fan of the move to proper wide ratio in some of the new XC/XCF's. Hope you buy an XCF to test for us 😀

    If you were specifying the best 2021 FX350, what would that be? Rekluse, Tyres, suspension, etc?

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  4 года назад +1

      For me suspension by far the most important part on any dirt bike. Explore the stock range of adjustments with air pressure (AER forks), clickers, preload/sag, oil levels etc or go with your local suspension tuner to dial the bike in for your weight/speed/conditions. On my FX350 I run WP Cone Valve spring forks and Pro Components rear shock which provide a plush and friction movement yet absorb bigger hits. Expensive but worth it and I move these components from bike to bike. A Rekluse auto clutch makes riding tight and technical off road stuff way easier and even helps on the more open terrain. The stock AT81 tires actually work pretty well over a wide range of off road conditions but the stock lightweight inner tubes are easily damaged so HD tubes or Tubliss or bibbs are best. Some owners like to add a radiator fan which is a good idea for tight technical riding but I've not needed one for my riding. The FX350 is my favorite combination of power/weight/handling in a 4-stroke off road bike.

      @@mxengineer1 So you have removed the WP XACT standard on the 2021 FX, and replaced them with the PRO and TRACKs Shock?
      Was that around $6k in suspension?
      Are they that much better than the Ohlins forks and Shock, you were running on an earlier FX 350?
      Did you use the Factory radiators, Samco hoses, Evans Coolant, you mention you don't feel you need the fan?
      No exhaust/header/ mapping changes?
      Are you happy with the Magura, no desire for the Brembo factory ?
      I am running a modified 2020 Beta 390 RE, but think I need something lighter and more competitive.
      Thanks for your help.

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  4 года назад

      @@iainhutchinson345 Yes I rode the 2021 stock suspension for a few hours. The 2021 suspension updates were noticeable and bigger change than 19 to 20 model year. I am now running a set of WP CV spring forks and Pro Components rear shock. I think the latest WP CV forks MSRP is around $3500 while the shock is around $2500 but I believe some shops will give a small discount. Expensive but you can keep these components a long time and carry them over from bike to bike (if you stay on KTM/Husky). The fork is a bigger and more noticeable change than the rear shock. The stock 2021 FX350 rear shock works pretty well.
      For me the CV forks are a little better in braking and high speed chop compared to the Ohlins: perhaps the cone valve concept works.
      My radiators, coolant, and radiator hose are stock and no radiator fan which works fine my riding on flowing trails or moto. I take my Erzberg 300 if I am riding tight technical terrain.
      I have ridden a 19 3350SXF with stock ECU re-mapped by Twisted. That was a nice improvement as the bike just felt stronger everywhere. I have not mapped my 21 FX350 yet as it seems to run pretty strong stock. I am sure mapping would make it better and it is tempting to try a Twisted re-map of the stock ECU. I have a slip on Akrapovic silencer to install on the FX350 to quiet it down a little and provide a spark arrester too. I run the stock header which seems to work very well.
      I like the feel of the Magura clutch - little lighter pull than the Brembo and the lever is smaller and more compact and has the fold away feature.
      The FX350 will feel lighter (and is much lighter) with a quicker engine response (mostly mid to higher RPM) compared to your Beta 390. The FX350 engine will be easier to stall at low engine RPM compared to your Beta 390.
