Hello I am a new DON and I feel that I don't have the appropriate resources where did you get your DON certification.?

I’m a front desk receptionist & I know the hassle of family calling for unimportant reasons… how do I better approach this if my DON has her work voicemail inbox full? I always tell them that I could take a message for her & I usually send it through the work email but I don’t think she sees it at all…. How would I make her life easier & is it justified for a don to not be responding to voicemail messages? I understand corporations are reducing employees for more workloads on one person but I’m just trying to understand because I’m not part of the nursing field.

Hello! Thank you for wanting to support your DON. I would recommend meeting with the DON daily to go over her schedule. I would tell my receptionist not interrupt me between these hours. I would also have her screen my calls. Anything that is pertaining to employment , for example someone might call and ask if you are hiring for nurses etc, they can be directed to HR. If someone is calling to provide services such as staffing agencies, can be directed to your administrator as they are the one who sign contracts. She can also provide you a list every day of her meetings. In the event an urgent matter arise, you know how to reach her. if they choose to not leave a message, then it isn’t important. The more you know about her day to day schedule, it will become manageable. Filter out as much as you can for her.
