- We’ve been planning to do this for quite some time now, and finally the stars aligned and we got it done. I have to say, I love these Sicce SDC 9.0 pumps. They do the job and are super simple to clean. I don’t yet have them on the ContrAll app but I will. Some day. Maybe. 🤭

Useful reminder for people to clean their pumps. Unfortunately when I cleaned one of mine the other day I disturbed a joint in a very awkward place around the back of the cabinet and now I have a drip that I seem unable to stop. I have just ordered all new pipework.

I have a couple SDC 6.0s and they've been nothing but trouble from the beginning due to the impleller design. Even the smallest amount of organics building up on the impeller shaft (which cannot be fully disassembled) has caused multiple failures and has nearly crashed my tank. Software updates required and email to Italy for WiFi use which was a very odd request IMO. Unfortunately I bought 2, one being a backup and now am stuck with them. Another failed altogether and was replaced by SICCE after waiting 3 months for it to arrive most likely due to the pandemic, but found it odd since you could still buy them everywhere at the time. These pumps give me more concern than any other item I have on my system and have been running for about a year and a half. Initially I had constant issues when the system was new and was running kalk due to calcium carbonate buildup on the impellers (seized and unable to dissolve in citric acid or vinegar) leading to weekly pump failures. These pumps are highly susceptible to this when your running higher PH and Calcium. I keep my calcium around 420 ppm and have stopped running kalk since and have no calcium carbonate buildup anymore, but am very surprised to have monthly pump failures due to biofilm. I was interested to see how much longer the shaft is in your SDC 9.0 and have to assume that it must be more reliable based upon your experience. Pros: easy disassembly. I've always had good luck with their older AC models which is why I went down this nightmare. I've had cheap Hydor controllable pumps running with better success than the 6.0. Currently running an EcoTech M2 on my frag system without issues... so far. Hope you have better long term success with yours and enjoyed your video.
Oh man, I’m sorry to hear about all your problems with your pumps. In my case, I haven’t installed them on the app, for two reasons - first, wifi can be very sketchy in our basement and I had read about issues with random app-initiated shutdowns and second, I don’t feel I need an app for my return pump. Sure, there are nifty features that are accessible via the app but because of the issues I’d read about with it, I decided there was no good reason to take the chance. I also agree 100% with you about the issue of having to wait MONTHS for a critical piece of equipment to be replaced. Sicce should have had their distributor ship you one immediately. The fact you owned a backup helped you, but they should have stepped up.
I don’t currently run Kalk and in the past, out of concern for clogging and buildup, I ran it only at half-saturation. Never had a problem. When I set it up on this new system, I plan to use full saturation but I’m lucky to have the luxury of dripping it far far away from the return pumps. My pH hovers around 8.0-8.1 and I’m content with that for the moment. I’d like to get it to around 8.2-8.3 but I have no plans to try and push it beyond that. Same with other tank parameters - I’m happy to keep them within normal ranges. So hopefully this will prevent problems with buildup inside the pumps.
I always err on the side of caution, sometimes to what might appear to be a ridiculous degree. This gives me fewer equipment problems, not to mention the stress of worrying about what might go wrong because I haven’t thought of something. This hobby is such a crap shoot to begin with! 🥺 Good luck going forward and I hope the pumps don’t let you down again.
Love those pumps! No issues with mine in over two years other than you reminded me I need to clean then. When you have time you will have to tell me if all of the plumbing with the trapped air would ever have them running dry on startup. After a long enough power outage with they start back up on their own or did you have to do something to purge some air?
Hey Jon, we introduced the trapped air when we closed the valves and removed the pump and then put it back. It just took a couple of start/stop cycles to purge the air and within five minutes the pump was running fully. In a long enough power outage the pumps would stay full of water because they’re below the water level in the last vat. It only affected the leak check lol. Thanks for the comment - I’m sure others are wondering too. 👍🏻
@@Reefgrrl that makes sense. So only an issue when disconnecting and cleaning them but not an issue in a power outage when no one might be there to fix it. I'm redoing my display and I'm thinking of getting rid of the reeflo energy sucker and do a dual pump setup as well.. ibthink the reeflo pump costs me $70 a month in electricity so anything that works may save 💰
@@BlueCarbonReefing I’m a convert to DC pumps - use however much power you need then fine-tune with valves instead of having no option but full-on.

Reeferrrrgrrrl I have the same pump 9.0 SDC and had nothing but trouble, problems with the impeller always stopping even after a soak in vinegar. The manufacturer sent me a new so I'm hoping no issue by the way i notice your impeller orange mine is black any reason this may be? Nice video 2 thumbs, looks like you don't use vectra UV anymore any reason why?
I don’t know anything about the impeller colour, that’s just how it was supplied. I hope the replacement does the trick for you. The Vecton UV was way undersized for this system and we only used it temporarily because it was better than having nothing. I have a new unit from the same manufacturer, who collaborated with American Aquarium Products in the design. It’s a TMC/AAP 110W. It’s ready to install as soon as I get the 150 gallon section of the sump empty. Thanks for watching!

Hi, I’m not sure what you mean....are you asking if the pumps can be run outside the water? Yes, they can but should always have water inside them while running, to protect them. But the don’t have to be submerged.
@@Reefgrrl Hello, thanks for answering, I have a sicce syncra 2.0, the manufacturer says that it can recirculate water out of the pond, but I'm afraid something will happen (I don't trust it), how long have you been smoking the pump like that without stopping? Does it overheat or, as you designed, is the water that passes through it enough to cool it?
We have been running these pumps externally for about 14 months, with no problems. They aren’t at all warm and as long as they don’t run dry and the water keeps flowing through them, they won’t burn out. The sump is located in the basement, with a constant room temperature of about 22°C.
