The police could investigate without the potential victim cooperating, if these photos go back to when they were 17 and were sent online then the evidence will be there for them to prosecute. It's the crown who prosecutes not the victim. Unless they don't want to investigate, in which case they won't find any evidence which might be there. And to be fair to all sides, a proper investigation if Edwards was innocent would clear his name.

This doesn't, to me, have anything to do with age of consent but a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, which he certainly was to age 18. In such cases it's not unusual for the minor to not cooperate, nor is it necessary for them to do so if there is a criminal investigation/ charge involved. How could it not be illegal to either incite to produce or purchase pornography from a l7 yr. old on the net? Is it likely The Sun DIDN'T take legal council who then DIDN'T review their proofs add the third mistake of the parents either lied or had no evidence. Comparison to Jimmy Savile keeps coming up.

Any parent of a seventeen year old can tell you that their child does not yet have either the decision-making capacity or resilience of an adult. In this case, there is the added complication of drug addiction, which greatly increased both the vulnerability and suggestibility of this young person. Tom Bower has said here that, because this was not illegal, it is essentially none of our business and that Huw Edwards career should be unaffected. However, we have a situation here where a man in his late 50's paid a vulnerable youth who was young enough to be his grandchild for sexually explicit photos. That is sleazy and immoral behaviour that most people would find reprehensible. The reason why it is a matter of public interest is that we are forced, by law, to fund Huw Edwards' huge salary. The fact that he has been the anchor of the BBC''s coverage of all recent major events, including the Queen's funeral and the coronation also gave him an enormous amount of soft power. If he behaves like this in private, the people who pay for him and are expected to believe everything he says have an absolute right to know. Tom Bower and every other commentator who have said '...it wasn't illegal...', as if that somehow makes everything alright, should be ashamed of themselves.
