But lets be honest who else thinks she is the top of equestrian youtubers out here? Like waht else can she dooooooo???? I seriously can't wait to watch since you are so inspiring and this could save so many horses lives ❤ love you Esme X 💖
Mickey was voluntold, as my teachers would say! 😂 Poor Mickey! This video gave me a lot of information, thank you! I’m also really glad Joey recovered quickly from colic!
The second pair of scissors with the round ball on the tip are also preferred for cutting vet wrap/bandages off of your horse. If you’ve got a thick snug bandage on and are changing frequently, if you want to take it off quickly instead of unwrapping, you can safely run the rounded part inside the bandage against the skin without poking them in the skin or wound
In my first aid kit I also have magnesium sulfate to make into a paste for a poultice. I also have nappies, they make the best covering for a hoof poultice, and finally I have a sterile trauma dressing. These are typically used fir gun wounds and bad trauma. They make excellent pressure bandages. A friend takes trauma coagulant granules hunting. I thought she was mad but she actually saved a horse from catastrophic bleeding 2 seasons ago. A ligature knife is good for cutting hay nets away fast and safely.
My old horse once had a gigant deep cut to his knee. My vet recommended incontinence pads, because they are individually wrapped and sterile, and wont stick to the wound. Plus, they can stick to whatever you wrap around to secure it. Worked at charm :)
In my first aid kit I also keep Swat. Idk if yall have that in England but it's basically an oitment that keeps flies away from wounds. In Texas, we have bad flies.
Every time i watch your videos it reminds me how much Horses are unique creatures and how much of a good influence you are for the next generation of equestrians!!!❤i have been watching your videos since 2018 and never get disappointed!!!
Hiii esme! Ty for this video it’s really good tips for beginners! Ur channel has really helped me and probably others! Love u Esme! Also where did u get these products? I’d love them for my horse!
maybe how to prepare a ride. Like checking your stirups from the ground and checking your girth once on and different types of tack. dressage saddle , jumping saddle ect.💚💚💚
Hey esme! So i started watching every episode of ur beginners series yesterday and the amount that I have learnt is so impressive and it’s all from you! I’m going riding either tomorrow or Tuesday and I learnt so much stuff like how to tack up a horse entirely as-well! (And do my stirrups i always forget how to pull them down and buckle them 😂) Thank you so so so much! Never thought there would be a RUclipsr as useful as you so thank you! Can’t wait to not have help from my trainer to do my stirrups! 😋😂🫶
another amazing video, every video i watch I get more and more excited for when i get my own horse soon. very instructive videos. hopefully some more updated tutorial/tips and tricks videos soon :) keep up with the good work
Love this video! I’ve had a horse that was woonded and bleeding a lot. I was so happy to have a first aid kit, to Make a emercency bandage to stop the bleeding! Its so important!!
Thank you so much for this info! I have some of these items and have read how to use them but never seen it in a video. So, so helpful! Mickey did great too 😁 I’m going to look for your hoof/shoe removal video now! 😃🙏
Great educational video! I'd say maybe have a raiser nearby (not inside because as you said, it's not sterile) the emergency kit to clip around a wound or maybe give an injection, the vet should also have a raiser with them if they want to give some sort of injection or drip or anything, so it's not super required since you'd have the vet to do those kinds of things anyway. As you said, rounded siccors work just as well and they're easier to use around a wound without hurting the horse or anything:)
A couple of other items that might be useful is epsom salts for soaking the abscess and I keep butte my vet has given me the average dose which I have written on the lid for each horse, thanks for the great post.
Another useful piece of kit is a mobile phone power bank and charging lead for your make of phone. These once charged hold power to recharge your phone, useful if you are miles from a mains outlet.
ESME PLS SHOUT OUT NEXT VID u have taught me how to do everything on horses ❤ you give me my spirit when I was little I used to pretend I was u and I was riding one of your horses 🐎 😂 you are the best rider in my eyes x wish luck x
I love your videos so much. Even when I have limited internet left. You are the youtuber I priorities! ❤ Only thing that bothered me. And this is probably just because I am so used to wound care. They aren't steril. They are just really clean. For it to be sterile it has to go thru a proses then be vacuum sealed and all that! But then again, it's probably just me who do a lot of medical wound care that actually cares about that stuff. 😊
I wanted to comment this as well. To keep something sterile you need to keep it sealed up protected from any and all contaminants, including the atmosphere, and the moment a sterile thing touches a non-sterile thing, it stops being sterile.
I do actually have some sterile towels - they've been autoclaved and then sealed in bags ( I just didn't want to open them on camera...and thus make them not sterile)
If u think she's the best equestrian/horse rider u know wassup and i keep asking my mom for a horse and she said There to hard to take care of but u are so inspiring and i wanna be like u but u are too perfect
This might be weird, but for abcess’, we use diapers! It fits their hooves really well and you can put any sort of medicine/dressing on the hoof, and then you can vet wrap over the diaper, and ten duct tape! It is easier than using a cloth on their hooves
Be very careful with thermometers that don't have either a long band/cord or a very thick end which prevent the thermometer to get sucked inside the horses anus. That happens more often that one might think! And nobody wants their horse in need of surgery to remove a thermometer out of their intestines... 🙈 Also, most vets appreciate it very much, if people use colorless desinfectants rather than purple or silver, because the colors make it more difficult for them to examine the wound. If no vet is necessary, the coloured ones are fine of course. Additional stuff I have in my kit are: Iodine soap and iodine wash, zinc salve, colic drops (brands differ), cooling cream, also instant coffee sticks can help when a horse is in danger of a circulatory collaps, Electrolytes (Heatstroke). Diapers come in handy if you have to make a hoof bandage. 🤗
Maybe just maybe a tube of anti-fungal cream and/or an antifungal balsam or scrub might also be of use; because not all infections are bacterial. I haven't ridden a horse in years: but you've rekindled my equestrian side.
I don't have horses, but I have cats and a dog 😂 I think seringes are a good thing to keep in there too, they're good if you need wash or flash out wounds or if you need precision to put a medication. Also 70° or more alcohol to quickly disinfect your hands or a tool 😉 (edit: the alcohol also works to clean the thermometer 😂)
I always keep vet wrap and gauze on hand. I have used it on myself many times. Having it on hand has saved the life of my dog. She got a big deep cut somehow in our yard and was bleeding out. I wrapped the wound in vet wrap and gauze and rushed her to the vet for emergency surgery. If I had not had that stuff readily available she would not have survived the 10 minute trip to the vet.
I'm going to be making my own channel and it's going to be about horses I have my own horse her name is Bailey she's a Carmelo like Mickey but her mate passed away a few months ago
funny story about loosing hoofpicks, i lost 2 last year and this year i was doing a very thourough search just around the stable and found both hoofpicks!! they where covered in dirt and rust though.. but they where both behind the stables so im quite unsure how they ended up there..
When you said 37 degrees I was like, "that doesn't sound right. Their temperature isn't that low!" Then I realized it was 37 degrees Celsius and I am in the U.S. so I am used to Fahrenheit. So more like 98 degrees which definitely sounds way better! 😂
Thank you! Can you share the brand or dimensions of the plastic container you’re using for your kit? Scrolling through comments and can’t find. Been having a hard time finding a container that is large enough without being too large and love the one you put together :) Ty!

Mickey was voluntold, as my teachers would say! 😂 Poor Mickey! This video gave me a lot of information, thank you! I’m also really glad Joey recovered quickly from colic!
Mickey the un willing volunteer was very surprised with his temperature being taken but such a good boy 😂❤
Thank you so much Esme for posting this! I honestly needed this so much as I’m planning to get a horse soon. I appreciate this series so much ❤
Wow!! I was expecting Mickey to be way more bothered by his temperature being taken! But he deserved those treats!
I always keep nappies in my first aid kit😂 Sounds ridiculous but they are the holy grail when it comes to hoof abscesses!
me too!
Things just kept coming out the box, I’m wondering how it all fits in😂
Really appreciate this video, things like this are what I need a recap on x

I have dentist bibs so you can lay all your bits and bobs out on the floor like bandages or tape and they don’t get dirty:)
This is so cool esme and i can’t wait to watch the video! so glad you and all your animals are safe in this new uk heat! Lysm ❤
Half of this I already have, my record book for pony club has vets number, regular TPR, etc😊
It is always so handy to have a first aid kit around! Good Job Esme ❤❤
This is perfect, i want to make a little first aid kit for my horses but i wasn't sure what i needed ❤
In my first aid kit I also keep Swat. Idk if yall have that in England but it's basically an oitment that keeps flies away from wounds. In Texas, we have bad flies.

Also if you're able, tie a string to the thermometer. If you lose your grip and it goes on a journey you'll want to be able to get it back.
