- Kate McWilliams of "Unprofitable Instruments" introduces her citoles.
The citole is a plucked instrument popular throughout Spain and northern Europe from the 12th through the 14th centuries. It is represented by a magnificent surviving instrument of which my instruments are copies. With plectrum and frets, in many ways the citole is the functional precursor to the mandolin or guitar.

Thanks for the video. Very interesting making
Such an cute instrument
Great lesson Kate! Thank you!
I'm writing a novel about a medieval bard and this was very helpful ! It's so frustrating to find information on the citole and the rebec, as there is very little definitive information, so I was extremely pleased to find you have videos on both ! Thank you for your hard work, the citole looks great !
I was at the British Museum a few years ago and bumped into the book at the book shop. It was one of those things…Just try to pry this book out of my cold dead hands!
I made a citole many many years ago. It don’t play very good😢, but it was a try. Still on my bucket list.
Glad you liked the book!
Thanks Kate, wonderful.
Really cool videos!
Compliments for this serious and scientific work of recontruction
Thank you!
Sweet job
Thank you for the information
This is a great video. Your work is beautiful aswell
Interesting! I’m a mandolin player, and this seems like a precursor.
this instrument is amazing and your explanation very clear and simple. Bravo! I have one question: is there any place where plans or constructive drawing for this instrument are available?
Thanks for your comment. I do not know of any plans; I designed mine from studying the instrument and I do not share them. Have you found the book "The British Museum Citole: New Perspectives"? That is a treasure trove of pictures, x-rays, and other information about the instrument.
@@unprofitableinstruments607 I will try to get a copy
