hah, cool fact for romainians japonese can come in handy on phonetic part since for sound [u] we have letter [î] and yet all sounds are just matching with our language, we just have to make the connections! I feel lucky thinking of that! Nice video!PS: "if You try î sound in google translate will sound very wired, idk why but normally a short î sounds just as [u] in japonese. Same for all [u] related sounds kî rî sî etc"
Excellent video again Fumi! I think I round my lips without thinking about it, oh no! haha! I really like that you take time to have us repeat it and follow along, while still being "there" instead of just cutting away to a still image and letting us practice on our own 😊
I checked the sound in this video. ruclips.net/video/zGuW9Qgw-x0/видео.html It's a little bit close, but as for ö, it sounds like it is made deeper in the throat 🤔 By the way, I like how ö looks. It's cute😄
@@SpeakJapaneseNaturally I watched your video once again, then said a couple German words with an “ö” and I think you’re exactly right. 😀While they may sound a little similar, the German “ö” is indeed made deeper in the throat. Thank you very much for your response.☺
Fumi sensei, is it possible there is some variety in how different Japanese people pronounce う? I’m asking because my teacher (who was a native) would always round her lips when she’d make that vowel sound, considerably more than you do
Is that IPA? Is there a name for this symbol? I bought a book of Japanese songs and arias but the ipa included had regular [u] and neglected the difference between western [f] and the open airstream of the Japanese f sound. I was wondering how singing might affect Japanese pronunciation as an intermediate student in the language.
I used [u] as an IPA symbol, but maybe what you have in your song book is romaji because if it's IPA, Japanese "f" should be differentiate from the western [f]. I'm not sure how singing affect Japanese pronunciation ... How about looking for a video in which a Japanese singer sings the song? You can watch their mouth movement and see how they’ re pronouncing these sounds.
Yes, it is IPA. /ɯ/ is a close back unrounded vowel, which means that the tongue is in the same position as in /u/ but without rounding the lips, as explained in the video.
Your explanation is excellent. I saw a RUclipsr's video about Japanese pronunciation (ruclips.net/video/7DCCN3pCGtk/видео.html) . His utterance of "u" is lip rounded. I have no idea whether he is a native speaker or not. I left a comment about his lip rounded "u" pronunciation. Unfortunately, my comments were deleted already. As a responsible teacher, he should make sure his pronunciation is right before posting his video onto RUclips, I was told by my Japanese teacher (a Japanese lady) that '"u" in Putonghua (Mandarin) was lip rounded while "u" vowel in Japanese was unrounded.

Thank you for the tip! Not rounding my lips really makes the う sound more similar to the Japanese one!

Great video. 😃 For me, the Japanese pronunciation of "u" sounds similar to the German "ö".

Now how do you pronounce Fumi? 😊
Here, you'll hear my name😊

I never noticed that you don't curl your lips with u :o
Now you know it😄
@@SpeakJapaneseNaturally I just started to have a more natural pronunciation of the u. ^^Thanks
In Spanish we purse our lips so it sounds different
I don't understand all the lips round or whatever. I 'm not aware of where my lip is when I speak. :)
你好😂 in Chinese
