How to beat Rex in Metal Gear Solid (MGS Metal Gear Rex fight)

- In the Metal Gear Rex battle, start by equipping the Body Armor, then throw a Chaff Grenade so Rex cannot lock onto you.
To damage Rex, target the radome on its left shoulder using the Stinger.
Repeat this - keep moving, throwing Chaff Grenades and firing at the radome - until Rex's health is fully depleted.
If you run out of items, they spawn along the sides of the area. For example, Chaff Grenades spawn on the right side, in the middle.
In the second half of the battle, stay underneath Rex until the radar is blue. When it's safe, fire a Stinger at the cockpit. From beneath is fine - even without locking on first!
Repeat this process - running underneath, firing up at the cockpit - to defeat Rex for good.
How in the hell did we even manage to beat this boss when this game FIRST came out. I guess the previous generation of gamers mastered the trial-and-error technique

We softened.... Finished this game dozens of times back in the day and never considered it particularly hard, but my last playthrough has to be ~12 years ago. 36 year old me definitely lacks the skills and reflexes 20 year old me had 😅
There's a reason why controls like mgs1 are only reserved for horror games now. Cause it's terrifying how terrible it is to control

Came here after beating the game dozens of times on the PS1 back in the day but hitting a brick wall this time around in the master collection! Haven't even found the body armour!

Agreed - a lot about MGS was ahead of its time!
I feel like Rex is part of why the game had to be split between two discs.
@@saltystick_99yeah in reality the second disc is only like 1-2 hrs of gameplay whereas the first is like 4-8
@@cristiancorey468 Not to mention, the game cuts so abruptly at the end of Disc 1. At least, it feels abrupt to me. The way the game just suddenly goes "insert DISC 2" after killing Sniper Wolf and heading down those stairs.

Going through my first ever MGS playthrough and mastered part 1 but could not for the life of me figure out part 2. I figured chaff grenades would no longer work but flashbangs didn't either which made no sense to me. Thank you for this.

There is a range you can stay at so that you can dodge the missiles by running towards REX rather than using chaff.

@@rucheeification4945 He never used the laser if he doesn't see you. Just stay under him until he walks forward, then create some distance enough to aim up at the radar on his left, fire, then run back under

For everyone else who just got the collection- i found out that if you run behind him at the start his missiles will just hit the wall and you only have to deal with his gun

Odd. I tried using chaff grenades but it he didn't seem to have trouble hitting me. I guess I'll try again.

In the second half, you can also use the PSG1. However, the Stinger does more damage.

My one and only problem with this fight and many others are the archaic cameras. I grew up with these games, but going back is like looking at that one drawing you did in grade 2 that you thought was the peak of your artistic talent, only to cringe a tiny bit. Despite the awkward controls I still think everyone should give these games a playthrough or two.
been on the second phase for over an hour, I do not have AI like you sir. He just Instantly moves the moment I aim. He never stands still and he just spams the lasers when I go under him. Good tips for phase one tho

Never mind, you just have to stay behind for long enough. Stun grenades help.
Damn I die in the second part every time
My 8 year old me couldnt figure it out that he had walk under Rex at the half of this fight to shoot at the cockpit.
It didnt make any sense to me not to stand in front of this giant robot, facing the enemy and shoot directly in the open cockpit
Id never finished the game but I liked it a lot...
I got this far on normal. Died repeatedly, gave up. Played on easy. Beat it. Now that I watched this video, I want to play on normal again.

I died a numerous amount of times to REX so I raged a bit and so I accidentally flicked my controller over to exit instead of continue on the game over screen. So now, thanks to my muscle memory of pressing O to restart, I am back at Raven
What level is on cause Rex does not act like that when I play it. Lol! Every time I'm under him he spins around and doesn't stop. Then he'll do the one step death stomp with is super cool kinda ridiculous. Haha!

I'm the latest update he locks on even though there is chaff and he never misses. It's almost impossible.
I’ve been trying to save up my chaff grenades for phase 2, so on phase 1 I just run under Rex till he locks off, then I shoot, then rinse and repeat… It’s slow and painful… Do not try this if you have a lot of Chaffs to spare
Just saw the 2nd phase and I’m mad it’s this easy. I’m gonna go beat Rex now

Such a bullshit fight. It’s impossible unless you know the “secret”. Literally wasted 3 hours trying until I figured out the second phase can be cheesed.
I think there are a few methods to beat this boss, but all of them don't feel like fair fights - this is one I worked out years ago and stuck with it!
Doesn't work for me. He hits me with the lazer if I'm too far out and when I do get a chance to be underneath him he never stays still so I can't land even a single stinger hit.

After the dome you can get in behind rex with the stinger it will still lock on to the pilot seat and hit it there
The first phase can be done way more easily

This strategy doesn’t work, at least on the pc port. You just get attacked by the blue laser.
You do know the worst port is the pc port right? Most people play the ps3 one

I never beat rex, i gave up
Wait where the hell even is body armor dont ever recall seeing that and ive cleared it countless times 🤔🤔
I pick it up on the bottom floor of the furnace. When you go through the boiler room and crawl through the exit - the platform area with two gun cameras has it.
I actually think this is the back up spawn and you can get it earlier, possibly one of the rooms in the gas corridor before Otacons lab maybe, but not sure - I always get it in the furnace.
The second part is impossible
I don't have armour, can I still beat it? I never got it before this fight.
It's certainly possible - just easier with it!
I got the the second phase without using shaft grenades
I used chaff and stinger on both phases

My problem is I can’t equip armor cause I need the rations ready to go cause I get hit so much. First phase is easy now I just stand there and take hits and just fire back . Second phase I get crushed if I stand underneath, and if I run around I’m usually down to one ration and that won’t last . Bout to just quit and start second MGS
Playing on vita and back button is ass if you have man-hands.

Every single last boss fight in this game is utter garbage
Just run under and behind it. At some point the rex stops to look for you and there's the opportunity to shoot the stinger. Very easy boss fight.
Not on Hard Difficulty.

i played this when firs came out. didnt need video tips i dodnt have them. i alone was figuring out how to beat boss. took me a lot of time
