  • Many historians believe that the city of Santander has its origins in the Portus Victoriae Iuliobrigensium from Roman times. In fact, the first reference to the present city appears in 26 BC when, in the course of the Cantabrian Wars against Rome, the Emperor Augustus decided to record his will of victory over the Cantabrians in a port called Portus Victoriae (Port of Victory).
After the dismemberment of the Roman Empire, news of what may have happened in Santander is very scarce. With the Muslim conquest came the arrival in the north of people from the plateau who had fled the Arabs, and it was at this time that the foundation of monasteries, the bringing of relics and the influence of Visigothic culture and art began to take place in Cantabria. It is in this context that the origin of the urban and port settlement of Santander is traditionally situated, when, around the 8th century, the Hispano-Roman-Visigoths arrived here, taking refuge from the Muslims, and bringing with them the remains of Saints Emeterius and Celedonius. The relics were initially deposited in the ruins of a Roman baths, to later build the first of a series of churches that would culminate in what is now Santander Cathedral. This fact would have special importance in the name of the future city, since the martyrdom of the two saints in Calahorra, during the persecutions of Diocletian, created the Christian legend that the heads of both martyrs arrived in the bay of Santander in a boat. The name Santander would be the linguistic derivation of the Latin name Sancti Emeterii which, when converted to Vulgar Latin, became Sant Emeter and then Santander. Today both saints are patron saints of the city and are reflected in the city's coat of arms.
