For the people of Uttrakhand he will be remembered as a villain who orchestrated the killing of people of Uttrakhand at Rampur (muzaffarnagar) on eve of Gandhi Jayanti. His govt did not want protestor to go to Delhi to organise the possession in support of creating a new State of Uttrakhand. He is one of those politicians who benefited from polarisation and infact the one who played politics of caste with religion first.

What happened between Mulayam Singh and Shekhar Gupta on the phone, happened between me , as Deputy Commissioner, Patiala and SGPC Chief Gurcharan Singh Tohra on the phone. The incident finds a detailed mention in my already published biography in Punjabi. The incident is on record in the form of a demi-official letter written by me to Chief Secretary, Punjab , K.D. Vasudeva. Tohra had called me communal and I had replied that communalism was his bread and butter.

Alternate timelines are good "fiction" novel-worthy topics. However, REALITY has a linear forward flow. Deeply flawed historical characters play an important role in educating and reshaping mankind. It is important to note that the voters of UP no longer appreciate lawlessness and are now moving beyond caste to vote for progress and development.

(Don't hate on me for saying this as a Bihari who has stayed in almost 7-8 states in 23 years of my existence). Caste still dominates during election, people still votes for cash provided during election but I would also like to say that elections aren't completely rigged now as it used happen in the past as a child I remember whenever my father used to be the presiding officer of a pooling booth in remote locations my mother used stay awake the entire night glued to the television anticipating something worse, now that's no more the case so I think it's developing but rather at a very slow rate. It need's more industries, infrastructure and employment.

The turning point in MSY's long political career was perhaps the opening of fire on karsevaks trying to enter Ayodhya. 30 or so were killed. This gave Advani and BJP a big filip. Perhaps that incident could have been mentioned in passing.
The thing that gave BJP jump was him only appeasing to Yadavs only in OBCs he had united and BJP wooed Mayawati after Guest House,though she left later but she then didn't listen to Kanshi Ram and so Dalits went separate and hence BJP could make big inroads slowly.

MSY's biggest achievement was to bring the biggest chunk of U.P. population into the mainstream, bringing politics to rural India. Of course it was and never will be liked by those who have enjoyed power without any aberration till that time. But an honest analysis into it can only truly tell the social, financial and economic impact of it. Regarding the charges of bringing goonda raj, he in fact due to his effort of social upliftment has averted a very possible civil war in UP hinterland due to continuous neglect of many by the few.

20:40 Major support of Mulayam Singh Yadav or SP was from backward castes. And before 2017(when BSP was also strong) or till 2014, Muslims voted for SP only in those regions of UP where SP was strong(where it was getting significant amount of OBC votes) In Braj region and Saharanpur division Muslims voted for BSP. In cities like Kanpur and Lucknow they voted for Congress. And in NCR area of UP, they voted for Congress and BSP depending upon the winning chances of the candidates. In some seats of eastern up they also voted for QED of Mukhtar Ansari. In 2009 SP lost most of the seats where Muslims were significant and hence seats of Congress also increased. SP got 23, Congress 21, BSP 20, BJP 10, RLD 5 and others 1.
The only thing one needs to is the massacre of Karsevaks in Ayodhya.

Even though this CTC's topic wasn't of much interest to me initially, it was Shekhar Ji's excellent style of presentation and anecdotal story telling that got me hooked to the entire episode.
P.S : My earlier feedback and complaint still stands. Hope future CTCs are also as long as this one and not restricted to under 20 minutes!

Mr Mulayam Singh was one of the pioneers of identity politics based purely on OBC's and the Mandal Commission. He suddenly shot into the frontlines of leadership around 1989, when identity politics based on caste and religion had just begun. He never looked back after that. Went on to found his own party in 1992. The Samajwadi Party became the launch pad for several members of his extended family. Neither of his three stints as chief minister was noticeable in any sense. There was a fair amount of spurt in crime and lawlessness though. The United Front dispensation of 1996-98, brought him at the Center and he became a defence minister as well as an MP. He had a remarkable outreach in the political arena. Being a grassroots leader and also self made, he was connected to the masses. Knew thousands of people by their first name. Has carved out an immortal place in history.

Shekhar Sir, The event you mention in this CTC in Lucknow happened on 12th Aug 2006. It was in fact Press Launch of The Indian Express - Lucknow Edition. I was there. I remember this episode when Late Shri MSY narrated this in front of Choc a bloc Crystal Hall of Taj Lucknow august gathering of Lucknow City Elites and IAS officers. He infact inaugurated the Press at Amausi Industrial area at 4 PM and then went to other side of the city to Hotel Taj and remained there till almost 11PM, watched 'Tumhari Amrita' Play and left after Dinner. Amazing Night.

Mulayam Singh Yadav was a seasoned politician who always left a room for future negotiations and back door agreement. Yes it was he under whose tenure UP politics took the truly and ugly turn of religion based policies.
