  • The India briquette market is a specialized segment within the country’s renewable energy and industrial sectors.
    1. Biomass Briquettes: These are compacted blocks of biomass or coal dust used as fuel substitutes for traditional fuels like wood and charcoal. They offer a cleaner and renewable alternative.
    2. Market Drivers:
    • Environmental Awareness: Increasing awareness of environmental sustainability and the need to reduce Green House Gas emissions drive demand for biomass briquettes.
    • Industrial Applications: Briquettes are used in brick kilns, tea estates, and agro-industries for heating and power generation.
    • Government Support: Incentives promoting biomass energy and the promotion of biomass based industries impact dynamics.
    3. Challenges:
    • Creating awareness about briquette benefits for cooking and heating purposes.
    • Ensuring consistent quality and affordability of briquettes.
    • Overall, government support and environmental consciousness play a crucial role in the growth of the briquette market in India.
The “Biomass Programme” by the “Ministry of New and Renewable Energy” in India aims to support the establishment of “Biomass Briquette/Pellet manufacturing plants” and promote “Biomass (non-bagasse) based cogeneration projects” in industries across the country.
    1.Financial Assistance:
    • Briquette/Pellet Manufacturing Plants: Up to Rs.9 lakh per metric ton/hour manufacturing capacity --maximum Rs. 45 lakhs per plant.
    • Biomass (Non-bagasse) Cogeneration Projects: Up to Rs. 40 lakhs per megawatt (MW) installed capacity-maximum Rs.5 crores per project.
    2.Eligibility:
    • Self-funded projects are also eligible for financial assistance.
    • Projects with new equipment/machinery qualify for assistance.
    3. Application Process:
    • Proposals for Central Financial Assistance are accepted through the “BioURJA Portal” before commissioning.
    • Commissioning timeframes: 12 months for Briquette/Pellet plants and 24 months for Biomass cogeneration plants from the "In-Principle" approval date.
For more details, you can contact “Sh. Vikram Dhaka” from the Biomass Division via email: vikram.mnre@gov.in. Add the Indian government recognizes biomass cofiring in thermal power plants as renewable energy for meeting non-solar Renewable Purchase Obligation.
