It was not designed by "Herman Miller" but from Charles and Ray Eames for the company Herman Miller.
Isn't the same? When you work for outsourcing company, the owner of your work is that company.
@@Ipeacocks There’s a reason It’s called the Eames Lounge Chair and not the Herman Miller Lounge Chair
@@eyespy3001 because there is Vitra company which also makes same chair.
@@Ipeacocks That’s besides the point. Since it’s first production run, the Eames Lounge Chair has been called just that- the Eames Lounge Chair. Herman Miller (or Vitra for that matter) didn’t design the chair. Charles and Ray Eames did. Although Herman Miller played a crucial role in the production and distribution of the chair, it was the Eameses who designed it and therefore received the credit for their creation.
@@Ipeacocks who owns the work doesn't matter for design credit: that goes to the designer. If I take a photograph for you as an assignment you will be the owner of the photo, but I will be the photographer and will be credited as such (by law, at least in my country).
Bought mine new for $3,500 in 2009 with the fancy grain upgrade. Trouble is, I'm the only one really that knows what it actually is.
😂 sounds about right! I am the only person I personally know that knows what the Eames lounge chair is and I only know what it is because I studied art
Yo this chair is so comfortable, but I would never pay that price. 😅
IN 1992, I bought a practically new Herman Miller Eames Lounge and ottoman for $700. Since then, MCM became trendy and the prices skyrocketed. Boo to Herman Miller for gouging consumers.
$700 in 1992? Inflation perhaps more than "gouging" as you say as the Eames has always been coveted by a certain segment of the population. Especially among people that know anything about art.
Sometimes you have to blame the consumers
It’s what corporations do in our world. Welcome to the reality of capitalism. It stopped being about what’s fair or right long before 1992.
Was hoping for a bit more info on the actual production costs etc. And why do you credit the design to just Herman Miller while excluding the Eames couple?
why do you care?
@@stellviahohenheim because I'm trained as a product designer and credit should be given where it's due to the geniusses who designed this chair
I agree with you. Just poo pooing on the price and not recognizing the brilliant design and craftsmanship that went into it is disingenuous, to say the least.
@@Barrrt "Geniuses" LOL
What a strange individual you are
Clickbait
$8000 for being called a "very cool individual"? I'll prefer to remain hot instead 🙂
I agree with you. Just poo pooing on the price and not recognizing the brilliant design and craftsmanship that went into it is disingenuous, to say the least.
A friend of mine had Vassily* chairs and boy, were they unconfortable.
*Marcel Bruer named the design after Vassily Kandinsky.
There's a decent replica market. Honestly, having sat in originals and in replicas, not any major discernable difference. You can pick one up for $500 - $1000 depending on the option you go with. Some are a bit better, and almost all are pretty decent. I will never give herman miller $8000+ for anything they produce and sell.
Yes, depending on the manufacturer, the 'knock-offs' can be pretty good. We have a couple of originals from Eames and other designers of the era. (tables, chairs, etc.) as well as some 'knock-offs'. Compared side-by-side, one can see/feel the difference, but often it takes a pretty close look.
I decided i was going to own one of these ever since I saw it in Fraiser's apartment as a kid. Might have to settle for a knock off in this economy 😬
For that price I would rather sit on the floor
My law school had a couple of these. It was my favorite chair to study in the library hands down. Sad when I found out it's so expensive but honestly a solid investment if your a reader.
House had one in his office, I think
He did and it was upholstered in corderoy! So sexy
It is a comfortable chair, but like all those other mid-century icons, it's not all that unique. File it along with the beautiful, but also over-used Noguchi coffee table.
I have been obsessed with the Eames lounge chair since I learnt about it in high school art class!
This is the type of chair that someone buys and then it becomes a major part of their personality for the next year.
I'll admit it's beautiful and it's probably very comfortable but it's probably more like $1,000 comfortable. 8,000 is used car territory.
Yeah but a used car depreciates as soon as you drive it off the lot, this chair will not lose its value
@@TimKapow I'm sure it will never lose its value cause it never had it that much - there is no way it's worth 8k
you can buy reproductions of it made in China for about 1k
Now if you want to be really cool, amaze people with your knowledge about mid-century Dutch furniture design. You need to sit on a Congo or Pengouin chair by Theo Ruth. Try to score the Congo sofa, the two-seater, extremely rare.
They are actually also very comfortable.
Have fun.
PS
Of course I have the two-seater.
I have no one to impress, but I love well-designed and well-made furniture that is comfortable.
I spent $180 on an office chair once and that thing was so damn nice. I can’t imagine how great an $8k chair must be.. 😮
The chair shown here is extremely comfortable, especially with the ottoman.
My father in law has one and I've spent many hours siting and reading in that thing.
I made my own for $1000 and about 100 hours worth of labor
Depending on what you value your time at, it would have been cheaper to buy the original…
I've always wanted to work with forming plywood, etc. but other things . . .
A hunnert hours is pretty quick.
Did it work out well?
My grandparents used to own one and I along with my cousins and sister loved it. It was so comfy. But because it spun we did what all kids did and would spin it around in circles. For years this was fine. But one time we spinned it too fast with one of my cousins in it and it broke.
Ooops. I've spent many hours sitting in one reading or staring out the window on those cozy dark rainy days in November watching the seasons change.
It looks absolutely great. In the past (about 40 year ago) I have bought the chair plus ottoman (5000 Dutch guilders), only to find out that my back and this chair never can be friends. So I ditched the Lounge chair.
For the rest (then and now) I don't give a hood about looking cool.
Wait, Levi, you don't have one?
Def a bunch of knockoff that’s look and function that same. Nonetheless, it may be the better purchase. Buy new decent cheap chairs that will get replaced and lose all their value, or one good expensive one that holds its value and even appreciates. In general, it’s just smarter to own appreciating assets rather than depreciating assets. The rich are staying rich by making everything an investment in their diversified portfolio. Their homes, cars, clothes, jewelry, and even furniture are investments that are all worth more than they paid.
I didn't know what this was before but now I want one🎉
Should I be buying the classic or the new dimension size Eames chair?
Or, pay $900 for a replica of the same quality. Snobs everywhere...
It is super comfortable, looks incredible, feels amazing, super sturdy, and will last a lifetime
As a Turkish citizen, can somebody explain what does "Ottoman" stands for ? ;))) I really wonder why
is the left channel way louder than the right channel or is my brain broken?
yes.
I only know about this chair because my ex made having a vintage one a considerable part of their personality
Couches are cheaper than this. Hell you could buy 8 of my friend’s shit box of a car with that money
Yes but your missing the point of the Eames, if you need to make those comparisons then the Eames isn't for you.
I remember those chairs. They're actually super comfy. Though I don't have that kind of money for a chair. I just got a chair and $265 was already so much money for me. I got it as a kinda gift from family for my birthday/gamma knife get well soon thing. I say kinda gift cause I'm on disability and parents have control of money so they "approved" the purchase.
Isn’t that in shark tank? What the investors sit on?
Nah man
Your choice. Others choose diff. Free world. ✌️
Is this the living room equivalent of the Aeron chair?
Then you buy it prove it😮😅
I got a cool chair i can sell you 😂
I'll never be that cool and I'm perfectly ok with it.
I'll also never be that rich.
Also super comfy so it’s a combo art and comfort of you can afford it
Agreed. Friend has one and loves it. He has health issues and while not rich can afford it. So be it.
Is that the current price? It used to be 4k less than 10 years ago
It's not very comfortable FYI, it's only for looking at.
I've spent many many hours sitting in one. Great for reading. It really depends on one's body type. I have friends who don't find it comfortable.
8000 for a chair? That thing better gets rid of emotional damage when one sits on it
honestly i'm just mad that they spell their brand name the same way my last name is spelt, but the pronunciations are different.
Not worth it
Your ignorance is outstanding!
Not worth spending at all! Anyone who does is just a fool who got taken in by marketing or wants to brag.
Not to mention you can get identical looking knockoffs for less then 1/10 of the overinflated price
I don’t think so
It's kind of ugly though? Maybe if you were an Andy Warhol fan, going for that neofuturism look.
No
Rather donate and serve people who need help.
It says HI! I like to pay too much for a chair 💺. 🃏 😂 Just joking,I am glad you are doing well.
