South Rejects Government's Hindi Push?

  • The government today has completely denied any imposition of the Hindi language and says that it is promoting it. This comes days after DMK's MK Stalin came out strongly against what he calls the centre's Hindi imposition and an attempt to make non-Hindi speaking people feel like second rate citizens. From compulsory Hindi till class 10 in CBSE schools to speeches in Hindi by ministers, is the stage set for a new language war?

CHIRAG BHAT we prefer English for some reasons:
      1. Learning English is far more easy compared to learning Hindi for South Indians
      2. The Hindi language portion in CBSE is very disgusting. Many South Indians go to tuitions after School just because of Hindi. Any language except Hindi is a scoring subject in CBSE. So many prefer a foreign language.
      3. We South Indians have huge IT industries. So it's mandatory for us to learn English and it is Internationally linked.

Ravi: You are not getting the correct picture. Nehru was smart and during his regime the 3 language formula was adopted. The Hindi belt cheated on this one. Modi is extremely smart to know the danger of promoting a language that is mother tongue of only about 25% of Indians. But Rajnath Singh and Sushma Swaraj had to open their mouth and state how much they are fond of Hindi Bhasha - What? Who the hell cares about these public servants (salaries and benefits paid by tax payers) love affair with a particular language? - the likes of such people are only there to divide the nation and not unite. In 2015, the UP Govt issued a Fatwa that the official website will be only in Hindi - this was taken to court by the Govt of TN and they stopped. Why is it that all embassies have a budget for promotion of Hindi language alone 0- whose money do they think they are blowing up anyway ? My point of view was in response to someone who thought we all should have one language and that is Hindi - No this can not happen, our strength is in our diversity and we can not let a few Hindi-wallahs destroy our country the way we know it - Can we?..

I am against this compulsory learning of Hindi in CBSE and Kendriya Vidyalaya schools.
This issue has been debated and discussed a number times, but people who are imposing the will of the majority on others are not understanding the issue.
It was decided that we will adopt three language formula, where One would be your mother tongue and other two would be any other languages of your choice.
This was supposed to followed by all states.
What this led to in states like Karnataka is that we had kannada and english as the two languages and had hindi as the third language.
But what I realised is that this is three language formula is not used in most of the north Indian states. And even if they are studying a "third" language, they are studying sanskrit in devanagri script. They are not making an effort to know the other languages of this country.
I am fine with it, if that is the people's choice, but tell me how many govt institutions are actually giving the option to students to study other indian languages? the whole three language works on quid pro quo.
So if you are not learning other indian languages as the third language, I am not forcing it on you but I also expect you to not force hindi on us.
we can use english as link language, as it has more advantage as being the worlds link language, and let the students learn their respective mother tongue.

They did not oppose this decision why you guys are? If a person is learning hindi that does not mean that he/she does not know his/her mother tongue . Also the students who are studying in CBSE schools in chennai does not want tamil as a subject . Your state ministry opposed this decision so that more and more people come in State Boarded school by paying a hefty price.

    • @2sridhark

Nobody asked you to go to these schools or send your children there. You can always send your children to non-CBSE schools.
I am a Tamilian but you are using a wrong argument.
Kendriya Vidhyalaya are run by central govt. Hindi is going to be there whether you like it or not.
However everyone has a choice whether to send their children there or to some other school.
Also this debate has gone on for too long. It is not even funny now.
Hindi is a language spoken by 40% or more Indians. It is extremely useful in commerce, business and when you step out of Tamil Nadu. So, just learn that damn language and stop this stupid debate, will you?

Now if we decide to select other languages in the curriculum, let's say one from south and one from the east then their will be people fighting for which language should be represented. Fighting is not the way. We need to find a fair solution but by having a discussion. Peace out.

Agreed with Ajay Nadar. If Southern Indians moves to Northern Indian states: most of them learn to speak in Hindi in less than 3 months ; their basic command of Dravidian languages helps them to learn other languages faster. If the need rises: they adapt themselves in a new environment of their choice due to their basic mastery of Southern Indian languages. The scenario is not the same and almost all Northern Indians have difficulty mastering Southern Indian languages when they move to Southern Indian states: THIS DOES NOT GIVE YOU RIGHT TO IMPOSE HINDI ON SOUTHERN INDIAN STATES. If you are not intelligent enough to adapt to a new culture for economic benefit: THAT IS YOUR OWN PROBLEM AND YOU SHOULD STAY IN NORTHERN INDIA.

Declan Newton-Maharaj From a post in 1997 by George.L.Hart, Professor of Tamil, University of California, Berkeley
      on Tamil, Brahmins, & Sanskrit:
More Info about George.L.Hart: Institute for South Asia Studies
Sanskrit has borrowed quite as much from Dravidian as Dravidian has from Sanskrit. But none of the four Dravidian languages I have read has borrowed anything from Sanskrit syntax that I can identify. Much of the syntax of Sanskrit is Dravidian, and it has a large Dravidian vocabulary. Its system of phonetics is profoundly influenced by Dravidian -- Indo-
Aryan is the only IE family with retroflexes.
Sanskrit also lacks some sounds that are available in Tamil. Tamil has short e and o, zh, R, n, and many permutations of stops -- e.g. k in akam -- which are not found in Skt. Actually both languages have about the same number of phonemes.
Both languages are carriers of wonderful and rich intellectual and literary traditions. The only way to appreciate either language is to read these literatures and spend a lot of time pondering them.
I will say Sanskrit words, which is same as Hindi, coz Hindi is nothing but kind of conglomeration of several languages with base as Sanskrit. Hindi is like English, heavy dependencies on other language words.
      1. The roots of few Sanskrit words to Tamil are like just changing the hard Vallina Tamil words(ka, ca, ta, tha, pa, ra) into the Sanskrit "Sha"(ष ).
      Example:
      Kashta(कष्ट) - Kattam (கட்டம் )
      கட்டமே காதல் (திவ். திருவாய். 7,2,4).
      Nashta(नष्ट) - Nattam (நட்டம்)
      நட்டாமாமுலகம் (உத்தாரா. திக்குவி. 67).
      Ishta(इष्ट) - Ittam(இட்டம் )
      இட்டமான வியற்புக ரோனிடங் கிட்டினான் (கந்தபு.சுக்கிரனுப.15).
      2. Other than above mentioned words with sha, ha, replacements, few direct words will be like:
Log(लोग् ) /Lok(Hindi)- Ulagu(உலகு) or Ulagam corrupted into LOGAMU(ಲೋಗಮು) in Telugu and LOG(लोग् )in Sanskrit and LOK in Hindi from Sanskrit.
Krishaan(कृषाण)/ Kisaan(Hindi) - from the word Kizhaan(கிழான்), who means the owner, example "nila kizaan" (நிலக் கிழான் - representing Male owner) means land owner, Kaadhal Kizhathi(காதல் கிழத்தி ) means a lady who owns one's love. This even comes into as Kizhavan(கிழவன்), Aged and elderly Male owner of the land, Kizhavi(கிழவி), Female aged elderly owner of the land.
As per தேவநேயப் பாவாணர் ( Devaneya Pavanar ), Sanskrit word "देवम् "(Deivam), is said to be sharing roots with Tamil word "தீ ", he gives explanation as:
The word "theivam" (also spelled in English as "deivam")(தெய்வம்) is common to both Tamil and Sanskrit, and commonly considered a Sanskrit word borrowed into Tamil centuries ago. In an article published a few decades ago Devaneyan (popularly known as Pavanar or Devaneya Pavanar) points to the Tamil word "thee" (தீ) (means fire) as the root for "theivam". Worship of nature, especially those natural phenomena that benefited them or scared them, is common among ancient people. Rain was worshiped as something that benefited human kind, and fire was worshiped because they were afraid of it. Ancient Tamils, and even today aborigines in many countries, worship fire. Initially the "fire-god" must have been called "theivam" ("deivam"). With time the word came to refer to god in general. (For example, the word "thanneer" referred to cold water. Now it refers to water in general.)
English words "deity", "theology" and "theism" are all derivatives of the Tamil word "theivam" (deivam).
By the way, what is the origin of the Tamil word "thee". Deveneyan points to the Tamil word "thaei" (meaning "rub"). In ancient times fire was made by rubbing dry sticks. Brush fires in old Tamil Nadu were caused by the accidental rubbing of dry bamboo stems as they moved and swayed in wind. Thus the word "thee" originated from "thaei" (தேய்).
There are many words still to mention, I am lazy enough to mention all others, Coz it is like writing one frigging book.
For more details have a look at this etymological dictionary:
      ::தமிழ் இணையக் கல்விக்கழகம் - Tamil Virtual Academy::
      Page : 121.

It is better to have one non Indian language which is popular and useful for us to learn and develop more skills and notably make us equal. Just imagine all non native speakers of Hindi should learn Hindi but Hindi speakers are not having any compulsion such that to learn any other languages of India. I live in democratic country. India got it's freedom in 1947... When Central Government is imposing something on it's Citizens and States... Our Freedoms are slowly slipping away...
English is not my Native Language, Hindi is not my Native Language, both are not related to my Dravidian sub-race,
but I choose English over Hindi is 'cause I choose it and I prefer to keep my preference that way and Indian Government should respect my Freedom Of Choice...

Hindi is a regional language, it cannot be imposed upon others.
Gandhi was not a very educated person; he knew very little; he was a dictator. Gujarati is not a developed language, so Gujaratis accepted Hindi.
We have wasted 70 years because of the Bihari Babu Rajendra Prasad. opposition to Hindi does not come from the South alone but also from east as well.

Tamil is the official language of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry (Pondicherry).
It is also an official language in Sri Lanka and Singapore and has significant numbers of speakers in Malaysia, Mauritius, Fiji, and South Africa.
Hindi depends on the Sanskrit way(Hindi is Sanskrit Avatar). so Sanskrit will come to life in it as Hindi grows.

The 3-language policy was recommended by the Kothari Commission in 1968. They recommended that Hindi should be taught in southern states and southern languages should be taught in Hindi states. While all southern states are teaching Hindi (except TN and PY perhaps, I am not sure), not a single Hindi speaking state out of 12 odd has complied. Why??
P.Chidambaram has already clarified that he was only ex-officio chairman of the committee and 28 out of 30 members on the panel were from Hindi/northern states. He did not have a veto to overrule them.
Why is NaMo/BJP/RSS keen on putting this panel recommendation into practice while Kothari Commission recommendation is still catching dust??
Why are there different yardsticks for "nationalism"? If a southerner is expected to learn Hindi for the sake of unity, the northerner should also learn southern languages for the same reason.
If a southerner has to speak Hindi when he goes North and still speak Hindi when a northerner comes South, then our languages will certainly die, given the massive south bound migration in recent times. This is a recipe for harakiri.
All Central Govt schemes are in Hindi now. All parliamentary debates are in Hindi now. All minsters and dignitaries are being asked to speak in Hindi. It is expected that Hindi students should be allowed to take interviews in Hindi in any part of this country. I am a Kannadiga and I love my language. I also want to spoken to only in Kannada no matter where I go in this country and similarly other language speakers. Can the President please give his nod?
Modi/BJP/RSS are actually trying to kill English in this country and give that slot to Hindi. Everyone today knows how important English is. If NaMo kills English, we will end up selling tea at VadNagar railway station like our honourable PM once did.
We southerners will never give up our language and culture for Hindi.
We are Indians but we are not Hindi and Modi cannot convert us into Hindi. We will never succumb to becoming 2nd class citizens in our own country and play 2nd fiddle to someone else.
NaMo/BJP/RSS are giving a spur to communal hatred and ultimately division of this country. Sincere advice to Modi...please quit the chauvinism and zealotry and focus on development because you asked us for votes on that basis. Stop trying to implement hidden agendas.

I am fluent in Hindi and like the language. I love singing Hindi bhajans, dohas, and film songs. I speak Kannada, Telugu, Marathi, and can read and understand Samskrit. My grandfather was a board member of the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha and a cousin of mine edited Navneet, the Hindi digest. That should prove that I have a favorable view of the language.
Having said that , one has to show the Hindi-zealots their place. Let us try facts and logic for a change instead of playing on emotions.
First, most Hindi speakers believe that Hindi is a national language. That betrays their lack of knowledge of the Indian Constitution. No it is not.
Second, one third of all illiterates in India reside in the Hindi-belt (UP, Bihar, MP, Rajasthan etc). So, logically, it makes much more sense for Hindi-proponents to teach Hindi to their fellow citizens in the Hindi belt first, before trying to convince people fro other states that it is their patriotic duty to accept Hindi as the national language.
Third, the Three Language Formula that was agreed upon in 1968 required the study : "Hindi, English and modern Indian language (preferably one of the southern languages) in the Hindi speaking states and Hindi, English and the Regional language in the non-Hindi speaking States. The South kept their obligation. Hindi was and is being taught as an additional language for 50 years. Can you point to one state in the Hind- belt where this formula has been implemented? How many in the Hindi belt speak, read or write a single South India language? Instead, with huge population increases, and with that huge increase in illiterate population, these states have become a drain on the national economy.
Our national security is threatened not because Hindi is not treated as national language. The number one likely reason for national insecurity is illiteracy and run away population growth.
Let us focus on substantive issues that can bring people together than trying to gain political advantage by inciting through divisive issues.

Government should make all the 22 languages as compulsory in educational system. Because, these languages are Indian languages only so that whole Indian population can speak all languages and no linguistic state is denied of its importance. In a course of time, all languages will become majority speaking. If anyone feels it is absurd, then imposing Hindi or Sanskrit is also equally absurd. Democracy means that its policy should ensure protection of minorities interest also. All the time majoritrarian rule will not apply. And if it fails, it is not democracy but, is dictatorship. India is a secular, federal and multi-linguistic country. India was formed with that objective. Languages can be promoted by voluntary organisation rather than by government.

Saving hindi and cow shouldn't be the major concern now. Farmers are dying, corruption in every nook and corner, girls not safe here etc., Do something for these things first.

Let the North Indians learn one South Indian or North East Indian language along with Hindi and English, following three language formula.

Wrong to impose hindi, that result from PM/administration, capital city location and common language all are hindi centric, which is the reason create ego and advantage to hindi natives to bully other Indians. Research shows there are other Indian languages more original, qualified and older compare to hindi. Where is the separation of power and justice? All language Indians fight for independance not to make it as hindi centric. All non hindi speakers should unite against this hindi colonization before they lose their own identity and treated as second class citizen in their own country. India need to kick out the few hindi centric states and politicians if they fail to adapt and respect the India's rich diversity and exploit other states wealth. Boycot all things hindi till International language english is the only link language and all major indian languages are given equal importance in the central administration, for unity, progress and peace. United Nation should help against this injustice. India should have a strong non hindi centric political party to defend against this continuous bullying.

We do not have any problem in learning hindi, but do promote Tamil in UP, Kannada in MP, Telugu in Bihar & Malayalam in Uttarakhand, If you people feel this is silly then we say imposing is very silly.
