It’s so annoying how most jobs require a “degree” when you can learn on the job with most things.

  • @chloeh5367

From someone who is currently in school (just starting my third year). I completely agree with all of the pros and cons. A college degree is necessary for the career that I am pursuing, but I think that the pressure put on kids to go to college is excessive. I have friends and family who either do not go to college or did not choose the traditional university experience and those work perfectly for them. My advice for any high schooler would be to consider all of your options including going to college, community college, being certified, or going right into a career. Don’t just assume that your only option is to go to college.

I really appreciate you sharing and I can definitely see the benefits of not going to college. However, I would say that some of your points might be a misconstrual of what college is like. I don't know about all colleges, but I certainly know that college is not all about studying and right now, there is a huge emphasis in college on giving people real world experiences. For example, during college, I did get to travel and live/volunteer in 7 world cities (study abroad). I also had an intersnhip where I gained real world experiences every summer and I worked during every school semester to gain experience. There is a big emphasis on working during summers and during school. So I don't think going to college robs you of the real world experience, I think it actualy enables you. Just the right college.

i am currently studying nursing and a lot of the course is learning from home due to the pandemic and usually there would be the opportunity to work in a hospital abroad to make up some of your clinical experience. there is so much variety if you seek it and it can be one of the most wonderful experiences of a young persons life! so i completely agree with you

    • @marissaboland958
      @marissaboland958 Год назад +2

Agreed. College doesn't bind you down in any way, or not give real world experience. My college allowed me four internships, four years hands on work studying animals, plus opportunities to study abroad for much cheaper than I would get without going through school to do so. Etc. So I came out of school with both a degree AND real world experience. I do agree to only go though if you know what you want to do or have an idea. I always knew I wanted to study, and pursued the same field all four years and used my degree thereafter.

I love this! I never wanted to go to college either, and some things happened in my life which kept me from even graduating high school… I tried my best to catch up and go to online schools to make up credit, but I just never got there. I felt like a complete failure. But now I got a job where I can learn and grow and pursue a dream of mine. I feel like im getting paid to go to school instead of paying for school! The trades are such a good route if you decided not to go to college. Now im a mechanic in training and im so excited about it 💪

When I was in high school I was SURE I didn’t want to go to college and I was pretty content with it. But honestly I’ve worked full time for 3 years and I realized it wasn’t for me, I just felt stuck in my life and couldn’t find a job that would pay decent. I wasn’t able to stay with my parents and rent is so high, it was really difficult for me and I didn’t want that to be the rest of my life. So I’m starting over and going to college so I can find the career I’ve always wanted. But I will always support everyone’s decision because I was there too

I just recently decided to not go to college and I felt like a failure. I realized a lot about myself while taking time away from it though, I found myself more of a hands on person rather than being in the books or studying and learning whatever said career it may be. That doesn't mean I am not willing to take courses or learn though, I just know now that I am more of a visual learner. To be honest, I feel so much more free and less depressed than when I was in college. With that being said, I would love some videos on what alternative career paths I could possibly take for my future! I think it would be interesting and help a lot of people out who are on the same journey not going to college. Great video Sydney!

There is no such thing as a timeline to uphold. You can start anything anytime and be great at it.

This is such a good video! I never went to college and do not plan on it. I graduated a year early to enlist but also had a job that was more blue collar and never needed college. My husband is enlisted and also never went to college, because he enlisted right after high school. We both are proof to a small point, that even though college is so pushed, you definitely do not have to go and be in debt.
Also going to a small college similar to Ivy Tech in Indiana, is better than going to a university for all your college experience. People frown on colleges like Ivy Tech, but you can get the same education or a portion of the needed education for a lot less than going to a state university only.

I feel as though this is a very rose tinted glasses view of the world... what about the person who has come from poverty, has no choice but to work three jobs and doesn't have the funds to go to college and doesn't have the time to get into the sector they want to work in because of the circumstances they already live in? For example carers, young parents, those who are estranged from their families... your solutions don't really provide solutions for them and a lot of people don't even get the opportunity to graduate high school, let alone college!! I am very lucky I come from a country that pays for my University education but this is seriously where America is lacking.

Hi Sydney, great advice. College is NEVER going to be for everyone-life experiences are more valuable than just taking classes and lectures in school. Colleges are always an expensive waste of time for those who take education for granted, not knowing their sense of direction(s). It’s NOT worth the debt when you or anybody can gain more meaningful skills and lessons starting in minimum wage and other entry-level jobs and work your way up from there.
In the past I graduated high school in 2016 and went to a community college graduating in 2019 with an Associate Degree. From there, I decided I did not want to continue my education for a Bachelor or Master’s Degree after being in school for almost 20 years since I was in preschool. Therefore, for I’ve been working 2-3 different minimum wage jobs for the last 3 years. I used to do cashiering and stocking at a Dollar Tree and Big Lots in my local area. Now I’m working as a sales associate and mini car mechanic at a local AutoZone. Sure, these 3 jobs are the most basic low-skill careers where the pay is mediocre and you won’t make a lot of money. At the same time however, I’ve gained a lot of excellent customer service/people skills along with other soft skills that will definitely carry on to higher level jobs I’ll have when I’m older.
All that said and done, minimum wage jobs aren’t the greatest paying jobs-but at least it’s better than wasting time in a classroom taking useless lectures that don’t mean much. Not only did I save a lot of money and debt from college level education, I learned how to deal with people better than I used and have made many interpersonal relationships that mean a lot to me. There’s definitely a lot of choices and directions anyone can pick and choose even without a formal/college education getting an expensive degree. Learning to get along with other people and building interpersonal relationships goes a long way as opposed to learning and memorizing useless subjects and getting tested or examined on them. Not to mention, there’s even other important/valuable hard and soft skills that people can learn in entry level or minimum wage jobs.
I’m really glad that I found your video and that there’s still people who understand that college is not going to be for everyone. Famous people such as Steve Jobs from Apple and Bill Gates from Microsoft Windows never earned their degrees and bailed out of college as a result. Before Steve Jobs died young in 2011, he already made millions of $$$ without all those useless, so-called college degrees that don’t always mean anything.
Great video and great information! Keep it up!

There are many who take time off after graduation to try the working world. I did that then decided to do a year of jr college. I had plans to be a veterinarian so I knew I was going plus having a full scholarship didn’t help. Now I had plans to focus on my studies, I’m 2 years older than most so just get your degree and move on. That didn’t happen, I went to a smaller college, all women’s university but men too. I got talked into Rush ended up president of my sorority by senior year. I got offered to be in an honorary 2 year, only 11 juniors each year selected. We had a washboard band and did community work all over. And guess what a network of doctors, lawyers, exceptional professionals all over, you are a sorority of secrets and an unbreakable bond. Developed fist guys fraternity on campus and little sister program with my guy friends that were local. And senior year my boyfriend got president too. We had it great on campus and over 20 years later I still go back for homecoming for my 11 best friends. Wouldn’t trade it for anything. Oh did I become a veterinarian? No, a wife and mother to 2 of the best kids and I started a Christian childcare center to grow with my kids. I’ve since gone back to school gotten my masters in mental health and substance use therapy and I’m helping so many people see there’s another way, than drugs and alcohol, to get through the struggles of our crazy world. My best time, college and no one can ever take your education from you!

when i finished highschool i went to work along with my dad, despite his chaotic nature, im learning much from him.
in highschool i was bored, had average grades, had no good friends, and i dont what i would study in college
my family says if i don't want to, i wont go to college, but they always come up about the subject, hoping that i choose to go.
