    Magnificent. Since I was a little boy I've been fascinated by miniatures. In 1959 or 60 I saw a Christmas display at Northgate Mall in Seattle WA. This was similar just on steroids. The ship launch. The WWI Dreadnought passing under a raised RR bridge. The crane unloading cargo pier side. Simply magnificent. All here who took part in this event deserve a hearty thanks and a cold beer.

    For anybody wondering what the beautiful ship is, she's the armored cruiser SMS Scharnhorst. I had to get a good look at the crest on the bow to make sure it wasn't her sister Gneisenau, but around the one minute mark, you can see the blue shield with white diagonal stripe that confirms it as the Scharnhorst family coat of arms.

    • @steveonmareisland5268

      The first of the big ships is a Scharnhorst-class cruiser, laid down in about 1905 and sunk at the Battle of the Falkland Islands in 1914. The ironclad just behind the Austro-Hungarian torpedo boat is the Sachsen (as can be seen on its stern), a very idiosyncratic design from 1875. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sachsen-class_ironclad) I can't identify the dreadnought, but it is a late-model, you might say. Later than my 1914 "Jane's Fighting Ships," so I haven't much to go on. Amazing model work...

    • @vadmscheer
      @vadmscheer 4 года назад

      @@steveonmareisland5268 I think the dreadnought is Bayern class. Its a bit of an anachronism to see it with Scharnhorst (sunk well before it was completed) as well as some of the other vessels, but the overall effect is still very impressive. Perhaps this is a scenario where the great war was averted somehow.

      Scale speed cannot be canceled in water. This is because the period of a pendulum is not affected by mass, so the ship bobs quicker than the real thing. Unlike trains or cars, ships cannot be slowed to appear realistic.

    I have got to admire the outstanding amount of attention to detail. My two year old son and I just happened across this and are totally blown away. Now my six and ten year olds are asking if we could build stuff like this lol. Looks like my kids are going to be putting my engineering degrees (mechanical/structural) to work for them. Just out of curiosity what would be a good starting point land based or water based RC. My children seem to enjoy both equally but I want to keep it fun for them, any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you.

    • @C21L01
      @C21L01 3 года назад

      Starting point would be land based RC. Water based isn't for beginners - it's not easy and extremely time consuming to do water based because even with resins, you need to ensure it never leaks. Resin may set hard but it's heated liquid at the time of pouring.
      Real water is even harder to work with because you need to make sure everything is completely waterproof.
      Best start with land based and work your way to water based by building up experience.

      It's a scale thing. Same with RC cars, you'll never get them to handle or interact with the track the same way a full scale race car does. It just doesn't weight the same. The most accurate I've seen a RC car react to turning and driving was with that german RC "DR!FT" kit, which with further analysis, doesn't actually use the car's four wheels, it uses an under-body rotating mount with smaller wheels and motors to help simulate a realistic behavior... so it's just not possible to replicate realistic "full scale" movement in smaller RC vehicles. Maybe you'll find this amusing, but, try to search YT for "tilt shift ships": suddenly the movement of real scale things will look like scale models in a diorama!

      Looks to be one of the two Scharnhorst-class cruisers. Both sunk early WWI. The Tb 100M torpedo boat (built just three months before WWI broke out) also shown survived and was sold to the Greeks before being scuttled in '41 to keep it out of German hands. It's almost surreal to see this almost toy like, peaceful recreation of a time of great build up of hostilities upon the eve of such violence.
