Theodore Dalrymple: Britain's Vanishing Culture & Character

  • This week's guest on "So What You're Saying Is..." is Theodore Dalrymple, the English writer, doctor and psychiatrist.
Dalrymple is a contributing editor to City Journal, published by the Manhattan Institute, where he is the Dietrich Weismann Fellow. In addition to City Journal, his work has appeared in The British Medical Journal, The Times, The Observer, The Daily Telegraph, The Spectator, The Salisbury Review, National Review, New English Review, and Axess magasin. He is the author of a number of books, including Life at the Bottom: The Worldview That Makes the Underclass; Our Culture, What's Left of It; and Spoilt Rotten: The Toxic Cult of Sentimentality.
In his writing, Dalrymple frequently argues that the socially liberal and progressive views prevalent within Western intellectual circles minimise the responsibility of individuals for their own actions and undermine traditional mores, contributing to the formation within prosperous countries of an underclass afflicted by endemic violence, criminality, sexually transmitted diseases, welfare dependency, and drug abuse. Much of Dalrymple's writing is based on his experience of working with criminals and the mentally ill.

As a young man I have been saying exactly this for years. When I think of my country, Britain, nothing comes to mind. It has just become a bland, miserable, and lifeless gray stew that is wholly indiscernible. Most of this hinges on the mass immigration and the massive cultural shifts that has brought, alongside the ever increasing tyranny of the government.
Sharon Osbourne, believe it or not, said it best when she said, 'Britain has lost it's warmth and quaintness', that sums it all up really, and it's a tragedy.

I was born in Britain but emigrated as a child and I’m so sad to see what is happening there. When I first visited Britain in the 90s there was a strong and rich culture that the locals were obviously very proud of. Since then it seems the indigenous British culture has been changed by multiculturalism and Brits are forbidden from speaking about it or from showing any patriotism to the original national identity. 😢😢😢🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

I can also see the decline since the 90s but most can not, it seems culture is being destroyed by some sort of very rich and powerful elite and the politicians and media tag along maybe they are part of the problem.

The same here in Germany. The EU as part of the global "deep state" wants to destroy national identity everywhere. The ultimate goal is a world wide global communism where all people (without origin) are equal (poor). Just some people will be more equal then others. It´s the new world order, but the "elite will fail with their plans to destroy Europe. Brexit is a first step, hopefully other EU-countries will follow.

I agree. It seems to have taken two stages. 'Old Britain' which I knew as a child, seemed to disappear in the 1960s, and if one wants a year, 1965, the year Churchill died and when 'modernisation' was really coming in; after that, 'casual' seemed to become the norm; our wonderful railway system decimated. The CofE was still strong and still providing its benign influence, and it is remarkable how much it has declined in significance in only the last twenty years. Since then, it has been slowly eroded, but another defining year was 1999, when the House of Lords ceased to have 'real lords' (well, it still has a few, I know) and Blair had recently dispensed with the Royal Yacht, which was the most potent symbol of Britain worldwide and could easily have paid its way through charters, which were just becoming popular.

Yes, we're among the coarser peoples of Europe, and being working class I can say that whilst we're coarse in many ways, we're unpretentious and take people at face value. Britain needs a cultural renaissance, brexit itself is important but just one part of what Britain needs. We need a fully fledged cultural revival, and we need to rub the noses of the left in it!

    • @Dustshoe
      @Dustshoe 4 года назад +1

Jack Doe But if you take people at face value, you are rather pretentious towards them. Someone who is coarse just blunders on. The chap interviewed here has noted a coarseness in society: that includes coarseness in high as well as low society, as it were. Somewhere in the interview, he mentions hearing "fuck" every ten minutes when out and about. It was not that long ago when children, even in working-class areas, let me rephrase, including children in working-class areas of Britain, were heard to say, on hearing a foul-mouthed utterance, "Mummy, that man said a bad word."
Aspects of British culture are further slung down the drain in the name of political-point scoring and modernity. The right is as bad as the left in that. Not even the right has faith in traditional British customs and values. They don't know what they are. Don't they know how their great-grand-parents lived? They, who went to church and enjoyed a dance?

Great interview Peter, thanks. I'm not sure, however, that Theodore's admiration for the 'bohemian' is entirely consistent with his bemoaning the 'coarsening' of our society. Most bohemian behaviours could be considered as 'coarse' when practiced by the masses rather than a few eccentric individuals. In a similar way to that in which motoring and foreign holidays have only become problematic environmentally now that they are activities pursued by the masses.

I have to agree with this man. Britain used to be lauded for its self restraint, politeness and pragmatism. Pragmatism especially allowed people with different views to get along with each other with respect and pleasant discourse. You could have a debate or discussion followed by a cup of tea and a handshake and everybody felt valued and part of the "process". There was no need for "latin" temper and loudness. There was no need for middle eastern barbarity and fundamentalism. This is why so many of the world's population, during the last century, looked up to Britain as the epitome and benchmark of a civilised, safe and well behaved society. In just one generation all of these traits have mostly disappeared from British culture. We now have young women vomiting in the streets on a Friday night, young men with a total disrespect for authority, teachers and their parents, drug culture on the rise, the highest incidence of teenage pregnancies in Europe, and a youth that no longer cares or respects hard work, discipline, self improvement, learning or community.
This sort of behaviour happens nowhere else in Europe. Generally there seems to be a dignity and self respect in European young people that no longer exists in the UK. Our youth are running amok and they wear their antisocial behaviour as a badge of notoriety. It seems their only ambition is to be on the banal and trivial X-factor, and other programmes like this, driven by fawning and massively undereducated parents who think their fat, pimply, moronic spawn are hugely talented. Or they want a great well-paid job doing "something" that makes them feel special, even though they have no experience. This attitude of selfish and boorish entitlement didn't exist 30 years ago.
As an immigrant to this country, I made the decision to come to Britain 30 years ago because of the respect and delight I had for this countries modest and low-key natives and institutions - and its respect for the rule of law. 30 years on and I find it staggering how a country can devolve from such a respected place in the world to an almost third world, uneducated, anti-intellectual, violent and narcissistic tribal society that truly cares about no one. On a personal level I now feel afraid to live in the country I once loved. With a total lack of community interaction and care, with increasing violence, knife crime, a polarised population and a politicised police force, I think it's time to leave the inmates in charge of the madhouse and uproot for rural France or Australia where there are people who care about their communities, respect good common sense values and live a larger life based on looking outwards to help those around them and behave in an unpretentious, dignified, humble and life affirming way.

Even with a policy change, UK fertility is below replacement level, so without the imports the population declines to the point where the country is unable to function and would be taken over by an outside power. The elites need to maintain a competitive population size. There have been 8 million+ abortions since the 60s, the culture is women choosing to restrict their offspring to below replacement level. In the past British women had a higher fertility rate because they had to marry and produce children to access resources. The other day I saw a very chubby girl in ripped jeans, rips every few inches down the length of the leg....reminded me of a joint of brisket tied up with string......

When i was growing up there were clothes for each age group, a 50 year old didn't dress like a 20 year old, but now there is no choice, they just don't make clothes for those who want to dress for their age.

In England at least, diversity, 'always vibrant diversity', multiculturalism, egalitarianism, (leveling) and more, were for other people to live with, never those proposing them.

The comments about perpetual adolescence is spot-on. If one looked at pictures from the past (before the 1960s), one saw young people trying to dress like their elders, since there was the recognition that growing up and assuming adult responsibilities was inevitable, if not desirable.

I love a good grump but there's a fine line between grumpiness and snobbery.

So pleased to see my favourite writer on NCF. He's one of our best contemporary right wing thinkers and social commentators and I hope to see more of him on similar shows but especially on mainstream television!

Saw the Lawrence Fox interview, just brilliant! New sub. As an ex Pat I'm glad people are fighting back again the "woke" culture and disappearance of Great Britain.

Thank you NCF for another rexcellent edition. Especially pleased to see Anthony Daniels (or Theodore Dalrymple) whose work really deserves a greater audience than it seemingly has.

He voted for Brexit? No. REALLY? 🤦‍♂️
The only obstacle to culture is human being's aggressive and violent need for independence, a self destructive propensity to pigeon hole other human beings into stereotypes and an innate hatred of anything that does not fit in with their ideal of how the world *should* be.
People who bang on constantly about culture forget one thing which is that their neighbour is essentially exactly like them, with the same problems, fears and worries, just different values.
Culture clashes are what the media and politicians utilise to divide a country so they can simplify their work.
Society has not *broken down because of multiculturalism* , but as a result of *people's lack of solidarity, their totally envious and resentful attitudes towards each other and an absolute lack of human compassion for those who are less fortunate than themselves* .

It's not just British culture that's being slaughtered, its whole of the western cultures

As mentioned above the success, prosperity and influence of the west in general and Britain in particular was its Christian culture. Our legal system, education, health and welfare were all strongly grounded on Judeo Christian principles. Ts no wonder the country is failing. I'm convinced the work of political correctness is to completely eradicate this foundation. Modern Conservatism is committed to that end, my own MP Chris Heaton Harris instructing me to write to him after he found my views upholding traditional marriage as 'outdated and offensive'.
