For my money, it is one of the pivotal philosophical compositions of the Twentieth Century; the piece is both transfixing and transcendent. He had been deployed to Flanders in WW I. The work's allegorical denunciation while in the Third Reich of the Nazis' ongoing rise to power was heroic.
