Custom Built Hot Rod Headers For The 1932 Schroll Coupe’s Oldsmobile Rocket

- When we pulled the 1932 Ford 5 window from the Schroll estate there was a Oldsmobile Rocket engine installed, but there was never headers installed. Matt has been looking through his vintage hot rod magazine collection to find some inspiration for a killer exhaust system. One of his favorite styles were the "lakes headers" with a full exhaust run out the back. One of the biggest advantages to that style is you can "uncork" it for racing and return it to a mild street exhaust. Most of the headers you can buy from most retailers have a very large megaphone end that looks out of place. Matt decided to build a full custom set with a much smaller diameter end. After spending two days building the custom headers, the Schroll 32 look has completely changed! Once the lift has opened up Matt will finish up the full exhaust out the back!!

That pipe cutting tool is " boss"! Really looking good 😊!
I need one, where did you get it?
Hey Matt, I had a '30 A coupe when I was in high school (1960s). You are doing what I dreamed of doing but was financially crippled. I live vicariously through your videos, thanks
Wow Matt, The first picture you showed floored me as it had a 1954 Lincoln Capri towing the 32! I had a 54 Capri exactly like it in 1964. That thing would cruise went across the high desert of Eastern WA put the needle on 95 and just flew... smooth as hell. Really enjoying the 32 build, as an old hot rodder from back in the day I recognize a lot of "the way we used to do its" lol
Hey Matt. As always, great work. Every time you step thru a process that works on other types of projects as well as these. You show simple, creative approaches to complex constructs that are hard to figure out. These do-as-you-go methods flow very well when done. Congrats!
You inspire people to attack complex fabrications in methodical a fashion.
Thank you!
Matt when you dragged the 32 home I thought you were nuts! It seems in a short time you transformed this crustbucket into something to be proud of! I've certainly learned a lot, especially the metalwork for the subframe and door pillars. Keep up the good work!
Thank you!!
Simple and clean.
Back in the day we used a 35 ford driveshaft cut in half to get the perfect taper for the two main tubes. We could get them dirt cheap.
Love your headers, they really look like what was out there in the 50s and 60s because I was there during those days, and of course, we bought Hotrod Magazines to show us all the crazy but good-looking mods that were being done at the time. I am always impressed with the work you do in bringing back to life this long gone, but still, alive time in history, when times were so much simpler than they are now, and in my opinion so much better. Mom's were at home Dad's worked and when they got home Supper was ready and we all gathered around the table and ate a good wholesome meal and the issues of the time were all settled by the time dessert was put on the table, No one watched TV or talked on the phone because being all together at the supper table was a must! Keep up the very enjoyable work you do.
Thank so much for watching!
They fit the cars style perfectly.
Right choice and as usual...excellent execution.
They look great! Good job Matt, they definitely give it a nostalgic look and feel!😁😎😎
We used to call them megaphone headers because they we large at the outer end. The tubes we used were axle tubes. No one we knew had any slip rolls. Great look.
+1 on the axle tubes.
I was lucky the ski club we belonged to , as a family, had a shop, with welders and a compressor. My dad did a few paint jobs there.
An ex So Cal guy here. Back in the day I never "got" the East Coast look. Staring at this car I get it. Very cool. For some reason the headers just finish the image. Great job.
Thank you!
hotrodmyk...... Those type headers actually originated in the So Cal area because the lakes plugs and pipes were named for the dry lakes where they raced.
What a car to find, rescue, and own. Some guys have ALL the luck.
KICK ASS.
Looks awesome. I love how you do with what you have and aren’t stuck to what you can buy.
Keeping the ways of the past for doing things! Traditional!
The headers are beautiful! If you leave the crappy paint it won’t matter, but if you paint the car, the headers may be too close to the cowl. They will get pretty hot. Great method of building them. Thanks!
Now this brings back some memories. I made a set of custom tri-y headers for a Chevy Vega years ago. (One of those "I didn't know if I could do it, so I did" things)
This car is looking totally righteous. Absolutely all business. Great looking pair of headers.
Proportions look good with smaller big end. You broke the "always start on the passenger side" rule of thumb!
Those headers fit the look of the car perfectly. Can't wait to hear it!
That tubing cutter needs to be an episode of "Tool That Don't S***"
Indeed....
Really a nice looking set of "lakes type" headers Matt! You sure don't see those much any more! They make the front of the rod look just right! And just for your readers since I know that you know, when finished those were called "lakes plugs or lakes pipes". Of course later on they called the ones that ran down the drag strips the same thing even though they never saw the "lakes". Looking great Matt!
Nice job. Hope you fire it up with those headers open so we can hear it too.
I’m positive Matt will do that when the time is right!
Hi Matt, i love those headers, they are my favourite design for that era car.
Hey Matt, Your headers are looking great. One comment ... "back in the day", guys used 2 scrap torque tubes for the main (flaired) header tubes. I'm sure torque tubes aren't as plentiful now, so your solution is great.
A lot of work and patience coupled with experience ....really cool to watch
Headers look perfect! (and that's from a pretty critical guy in the past.) :P
Looks awesome Matt, great job
The header look awesome. I enjoy watching you build stuff from scratch. Keep up the great work.
Headers are looking really good! On the drop pipe to rear, consider putting a scarf cutaway into the bottom of the cowl panel, so the pipe doesn't just "hang" below the bottom edge of the body, but "fits" into or through the scarf as if it was meant to be.... can send a sketch to clarify if needed....could be a nice detail.
Really enjoying all your fabulous fab videos.....keep it up!
It always helps to have vision.😊
Pipes make the statement on a fenderless Hot Rod for both looks and sound. I'm a believer on the heavier gauge steel on the megaphone. It won't sound so tinny. Kick ass as usual.👍😎👀
Hey Matt, your headers are looking great, I like the material thickness you chose, the thinner material will sound tinny, I usually work by myself, so I'm always trying to figure ways to fixture stuff during the fabrication process, I save ALL of my drop pieces of steel, I totally agree you never know when you will need a small piece of material. As I mentioned in a previous comment, if you ever get back to Michigan, north of Detroit, let's do lunch, we will buy....we could swap stories...GOD BLESS!!!
Thanks Michael!!
This brings back memories of when I worked at Clifford Research building headers for 6 cyl. engines. 6=8.
Like the header build. The only thing that I would have done is when you make 2 of each pipe as I build the first side. Should be quicker and match side to side. Enjoy
Great Job on the headers. Watching this video has inspired me to make my own. I got a slip roller and some 16ga sheet metal. Mine might be a little tricky, I want want this type of headers on my Ford IL6.
Dang Matt, you make it look so easy building headers in your "Exhaust the Easy Way"
Class 101..... haa ha!
Another great show as usual. Thank you for taking time out of your day, your life, to show us all, how it's done and the way the rodders did it back in the day.
Oh boy, I saw the car I love in the background. The '39 Ford Forgotten Hot Rod. I watched you build that one from the day you drug it out of the junkyard swamp. Are you going to be doing anything else with her? She is a beauty, and when you put the correct headlights on her, man that really pulled the front-end all together.
Have a great day.
A lot of guys used the inner drive shaft tubes from a 35/36 Ford for the tapered pipes on that style of headers.
Was it the drive shaft tubes or the tapered axle tubes?
@@threynolds2 inner drive shaft tube ,used the axle tube for jack stands
Yeah, I’m wondering why he didn’t just use the drive shaft tubes. Would’ve been nice to see.
Great video, I have used old driveshafts for headers in the past. It is interesting to watch you go thru the same drill I went thu 25 years ago.
Thanks! It was great to see the process you took to build them headers. They look great!
It's coming along very nicely. Aesthetically, the headers with 3 pipes looks so much better than 4 I think. Car looks boss!
Headers look perfect Matt.
Looks great Matt. How about making a set of old school zoomies for the track. Bring her to beaver springs and run. Hell yea!
These headers look great!
I know exactly what you’re saying when it comes to modern manufactured headers. They just don’t have that custom built look.
My T bucket project started because of an early style roadster header for a small block Chevy I found fo $100,. What makes them special is the sweep of the bends coming out of the cylinder heads is a much larger radius than the modern roadster headers commonly found on T buckets. Mine look like the headers on the Milner coupe. They also have a large diameter and very long collector with a cutout to the inside for under car exhaust.
I built most of my cars body, starting with actual Henry parts that were discarded by restoration guys. A little sand blasting, a little acid. Lots of welding, lots of fabricating, and you end up with a car. The secret is to just keep working on it till its finished.
Excellent Job On The Headers! Good Ole American Ingenuity.
Thanks for watching
Most people that build hot rods fabricate their own stuff. Sometimes if you can't afford to buy a car the only way to get one is to build it. Junk parts are cheaper than premium parts. This is why people fabricate their own stuff.
Not necessarily!
Loved that pipe cutter, made it a breeze
Outstanding job 👍 on the headers
Every day the build gets more attitude, great look!
Matt the Scholls 32 Roadster is looking hot ! Thank you for sharing this with me ! Take care , stay safe and healthy with whatever you maybe doing next ! Doing well here in Kansas .
Whenever I see this car with the awesome paint Frankenstein comes to mind
IT LQQKS KILLER!!!!! ......AWESOME JOB MATT!!!!!!!!!!!
Good job, I think you got the tube dias spot on. Good eye Matt! I see it in all your scale work, the red 34 you got sitting so well.
With this many builds happening theres gonna be a time full of engine starts and road trips coming up. Most anticipation on the blown Ardurn!
😊
Looks good, you have the right idea here.
The small block Ford had four individual ports . The SBC had the 2 center ports next to each other.
You should heli braze (silicone bronze) the tubes to the flange on the out side , with small welds on the inside of the port . It stoped the header tubes from cracking near the flange. by reducing the heat affected zone
very cool homemade headers can't get any better than that
Look great love to watch you work your heart is in your work.
That was excellent video, I could imagine how you had to build them but would never have achieved what you have, it’s looking great now👍
Very nice looking Matt. Can't wait to hear them rumble.
excellent job once again
i like the hat. just remember, it's better to be pissed off, than pissed on.
Awesome tutorial of how to make headers like this. Very helpful.
Matt, Larry would be pleased with the way ur bringing the car back. Carry on bro, regards to Kate an the fur babies. Terry
Wow simple but effective. Can't wait to hear it. Makes me kind of hopeful about my own project - it's a V6 but similar in some ways
Very nice. If you ever want to get crazy on an exhaust system, old Ford torque tubes can do it for you.
Good looking. Well matched.
Headers look awesome, by the way my Shirt arrived on the 19 th ,love it.
Thanks for the purchase!
@@IronTrapGarage Your very welcome,I am 68 year old Former US Marine and watch your channel almost every day
They look bad ass! Came out great
Amazing job as always Matt!! Great editing work Mike! Matt, dude I love that ball cap lol
Someone may have already posted this. I was told '36 drive shafts used to be coveted because guys would cut them in half and use them as the dump tubes. Both ends of a '36 driveshaft have the same taper. They are a little on the skinny side, but you use what's at hand when you're making a hot rod.
The headers came out awesome Matt great fabrication as usual
Perfect compliment to that car. Good eye
Tubular , man... what a lot of fab it's gonna be...more to come...
Excellent session, Matt....'love the headers! Thanks for sharing! Be safe!
Matt, that green on the car is the Shit , just too cool watching you build the headers. Keep going!
Hoping you get 100K subscribers by end of April!! Soooo close!
Us too!!!
Hey Matt, a lot of praising going on around here, but well deserved. Good job Matt 👍.
I would have rather seen you treat the center port the way it was done by my former neighbor in W. L.A. Beginning with his '50 Olds Gasser he fabricated a piece that fit into the port and split the two cylinders. This piece was welded to the header flange therefore allowing two pipes to be used. A tapered square mandrel was made to be pounded into the heated tubing forming the correct fitment to the flange. You can see examples of this in pictures of the Adams and McEwen Dragster and the Stone, Woods and Cook A/GS Willys. Extra work, but with huge results. Be careful not to further restrict flow in center port. Not trying to be a troll... I just love those Rocket 88's.
You have nailed the combination of work / talking and the music is perfect .
You deserve more than 94.7k subs .
Thank you!
Split the exhaust pipe on the center. Make it wider. Then blend it into the megaphone.
Great job Matt
Matt looking great. Thanks for sharing. Kevin
Love how these came out. Great job!
Sweet headers, look great on the car
two questions:
what color are you going to powder coat the headers and
are you worried about engine torque making the headers rub on the body?
Sweet lookin headers, looks killer allready,, that's why u never throw anything away..pieces an parts ,,lol.lol
Hey Matt
The coupe is lookin great !
Getting that nasty old windshield out of the car made a great differance.
The Headers look great, But you may be unhappy with them when they blister the paint on the cowl.
My 27 T roadster has the same style headers on a 327 SBC 2 inches from the cowl and they still blistered the paint.
Mine are open ended with baffles which I know contributed to the heat build up in the headers.
Maybe with your tail pipe dropping the hot gasses away from the collector it will not heat them as bad as my baffles do.
Heres hopping !
Be Safe and Well
Groovy baby, next is lake pipes and a visit to Bonneville!
You seem to be able to do it all! What pisses me off is that you have excellent taste as well. Good on ya!
I made my own megaphones, 1 3/4 to 3". A freind had a 3 roll roller, makes great megaphones. I have baffles in the megaphones, no under car exhaust. I have a hot flathead.
Headers look "Vintage" & cool!!! Keep up the great work!!!
What an artist!!!!!
John in MD
Nice work on the headers.
Waiting for my lake style ceramic coated headers to be delivered for my 27 sedan build. This was a fun video for me.
Kool.... Can't wait to hear it fire up..
Very educational on building your own headers, I haven't tried yet.
my favorit build gets even better, kick ass good
