- Barn owl chicks Lucky & Uno have several tactics to help them cool off in the summer heat.
Watch them open their beaks and draw in cool air (a technique called 'Gular fluttering' not dissimilar to how dogs pant). They also move as little as possible, even lying flat against the nest floor.

Barn owl chicks
Adopted barn owl chick Lucky is now 41 days old and Uno, Gylfie's natural chick, is 28 days old and they spend their days together in the nest. Gylfie is still feeding them but does not spend time brooding them.
UK heatwave
With temperatures expected to soar to 30 (degrees centigrade), it is important these owl chicks stay cool.
How barn owls keep cool
Mostly this involves lying as flat as possible on the floor of the nest, and also panting to draw in cool air.
Flies in the nest
The heat draws in more flies than usual and these provide interest for the barn owl chicks - watch their eyes!

After watching sooo many different bird stories...songbirds, corvids, owls, raptors...go from hatchling to nestling to fledgling...I do have to say with much confidence that the barn owl babies seem much more loving, bonded and compassionate with their siblings more than any of the other ones I've watched. I've rarely, if ever, seen bonking or fighting from them. It's just something that has made me fall in love with them even more ❤

no offense, but i have seen the twitter post on how 26C was called a heatwave and all the Americans clowning on that post...as someone living in the subcontinent where 29C is the average and 40C is considered a heatwave, whats the average temp of the UK to consider a mild hot day in the subcontinent equating to a heat wave?
